Christmas Commercials 2020

With this year being very different from the other years, then I might as well explain that some of what had happened with the Christmas commercials this year might be different in some ways, but was not really that different. It is really more easy to keep track of what happens during election years since there is typically less. For me, 2018 had more ridiculous political commercials in terms of total numbers in the end. And I didn’t even keep track of it to know for sure. I do have a counter for the overrun of Christmas commercials which I’ll get a bit more into later. This counter can keep the numbers of whatever I pick to be more accurate (hopefully). The overrun number might change by next year’s count as it has in the past.

In 2012, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 27. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 200. In 2013, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 5. The official count before Halloween was 30. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 600. In 2014, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 3. The official count before Halloween was 26. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 700. In 2015, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 13. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 530.

In 2016, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 45. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 386. In 2017, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 78. The official count before December started was 767. In 2018, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 13. The official count before December started was 567. In 2019, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 19. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 487.

Christmas overrun for 2014-2015 is 28 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2015-2016 is 14 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2016-2017 is 55 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2017-2018 is 41 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2018-2019 is 36 commercials.

In 2020, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 1. The official count before Halloween was 33. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 360. This was not nearly as bad as it could have been, but this was largely due to the shit ton of political commercials in their place. One would think that there would be more in the overrun time frame (as explained in the next paragraph) to make up for it as there was after Christmas of 2016, but this does not appear to be the case this time around. Indeed, the only Christmas commercial that aired was from Liberty Mutual, the company that also sent out robo calls to my house for about 5 times a day for two weeks (or someone claiming to be them did this). At least they are doing another commercial thing now.

Christmas overrun for 2019-2020 is 18. Christmas overrun for 2020-2021 is 16. Christmas overrun means that after Christmas and in a bit of January, you will see Christmas commercials of some type. I’m keeping track of them, although they will always be separate from the main list.

And that’s it for this post. I wish that there was more to say in these posts instead of just making it the same thing (largely) over and over. But I’m glad that I’m caught up and done counting. Like I said, I might not have all of the overrun at the first count and I will be using a clicker (which is what I meant earlier when I said counter) to keep track of the numbers of back to school, political, or Christmas commercials in the future. (I honestly need more than one clicker, but this will help me out much better than just trying to keep track and keep the three themes safe, even if one is only counted on facebook and not on this or any other blog of mine.) Let’s hope that the count is as good and accurate as it can be, although I'm not even sure who all besides me (if anyone) cares about this.
