2008 Ended Shows Reviews

Well, it is time for me to go back in time again for this post as I talk about all the shows that I’ve seen and care about that ended in 2008. I should and might go back to years older than this in the future. But I don’t know yet if I will. Also, I can’t find any non-American shows for this list as easily as I would like to so I may be unintentionally ignoring any and all foreign shows that I might have seen that ended this year. I may have missed shows that I’ve seen that should be on the list. Enjoy my reviews of various shows that ended in 2008. And don't be surprised if when I do blog posts changes a lot.

1 versus 100: Show history- This aired on NBC for a bit. A syndicated version also aired. What’s it about- A game show, a contestant competes against a group of 100 players, answering the same questions. The goal is to eliminate those in the higher group. If you can or walk out with money won, you win. If you get a question wrong, they split the money. Why I’ve seen it- It was on and I wanted to watch it. My viewing habits- I saw random episodes here and there. Where it aired- This aired in primetime on NBC and later in syndication. What I liked about it- The show was fairly easy, straightforward, and simple. What I didn’t like about it- The show could seem long and drawn out. More thoughts on it- I pretty much liked this for the most part. Why it ended- I guess there was a lack of interest in it. What current shows are like it- There are numerous game shows with the highest payout being $1,000,000 like this one. But I don’t know if there is anything exactly like this. DVD suggestion- I don’t think that this is on DVD. I wouldn’t get it myself, even though I do like it. Grade: B-.

3-2-1 Penguins!: Show history- I think that this was mainly a video series first before it aired that and newer episodes on NBC on Saturday mornings. What’s it about- Two kids learn life lessons be being warped into space and dealing with versions of that in strange adventures. Why I’ve seen it- I was into the idea and liked the creators of this since he did VeggieTales. I was more likely to see it here on TV than using the video formats. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this, which was pretty much all that had aired of it. Where it aired- This was on NBC as part of the Quobo programming. What I liked about it- It teaches good life lessons and is a good use of time. What I didn’t like about it- The show could be too strange and had an annoying, recurring villain. More thoughts on it- It was a nice thing to watch and I don’t know how much, if any, of the Christian references were edited out of it. Why it ended- I don’t know. What current shows are like it- Odd Squad. DVD suggestion- I would recommend this for everyone. Grade: B+.

DinoSquad: Show history- This aired on CBS on Saturday mornings. It is my understanding that while they aired all of the first season, the second season went mostly unaired, but is released in some format or was at one point in time. What’s it about- Two dinosaurs somehow escape extinction with the others and one wants to turn humans into mutant dinosaurs while the other helps a group of five teens who gained the powers to turn into them. Why I’ve seen it- It looked interesting enough. My viewing habits- While I had a bit of trouble getting into it, once I was, I was pretty much a fan of it until it last aired. Where it aired- It was a CBS show. What I liked about it- The show was interesting with different plots that taught some of the usual life lessons. What I didn’t like about it- For better or worse, it had almost no educational focus on dinosaurs. Some of what was focused on instead was pretty basic and stuff you would find elsewhere. More thoughts on it- It seemed like it would be better if there were more to it in the end, such as more to the overarching storyline. Why it ended- I’m guessing that it was just standard lack of people caring. What current shows are like it- None that I know of. DVD suggestion- Well I would get this myself (if it were out on DVD for sure, that is), it isn’t high on my priority list. Grade: B.

Aliens in America: Show history- This was one of the few sitcoms that aired on the CW right before they did away with them. It lasted one single season. What’s it about- There was actually a lot to it as a family has a Muslim exchange student move in with them for the school year. The main character is an oddball and the rest of the family can be strange as well, which is to be expected. Why I’ve seen it- I was into it for some reason that I can’t quite remember clearly. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this, but I can’t remember how much that was or if I saw it all because I don’t remember when it aired for sure. Where it aired- This is one of only two sitcoms that I know of to air new episodes exclusively on the CW. This was around the time that the network in question gave up on sitcoms, although this one was well liked by some critics. What I liked about it- The plot worked for the most part. It was nice to see a show tackle the issue of Muslim prejudice, a topic I didn’t know about beforehand. What I didn’t like about it- This had some of the usual problems such as characters behaving badly. Although, it was not nearly as bad as it could have otherwise been. More thoughts on it- It seemed pretty typical of its genre, although many people thought that it was great and didn’t last long enough. Why it ended- It was probably low ratings and the fact that the CW wanted to get rid of all sitcoms and no one else wanted to continue the show, unlike with The Game. What current shows are like it- Speechless and The Good Doctor. DVD suggestion- This isn’t on DVD and even if it were, I would put it at a toss-up. Grade: C+.

All Grown Up!: Show history- This aired on Nickelodeon, but I mostly saw it on CBS, back when they aired those shows on CBS. What’s it about- This is a spin-off of Rugrats, featuring the cast when they are older and in high school. Why I’ve seen it- I liked the original show so I thought that I might as well tune into this as well. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this, although it wasn’t that much. Where it aired- It was mostly on Nickelodeon. What I liked about it- It had some nicer and more serious concepts that what we would normally see on the main show. What I didn’t like about it- This was too different than Rugrats and seemed to take away the large appeal of it. More thoughts on it- Most people didn’t like this that I know of, although it might be more popular with some people than with others. Why it ended- I’m guessing that it was lack of interest or something like that. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- I’d pass. That’s not to say that I didn’t like the show, but I wouldn’t want to see it again either. Grade: C.

Animalia: Show history- This aired for two seasons and was a collaboration between different countries. What’s it about- Two people travel to a world of talking animals and have to fix the problems with part of the world’s core goes missing. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in it and I think that it aired at a good time. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this, although a lot of was stuff I never saw somehow. Where it aired- It was a PBS kids show. What I liked about it- There were good and interesting plots to it. What I didn’t like about it- This seemed similar in many ways to some other shows in the general idea of some things. More thoughts on it- I thought that it was pretty good and don’t know all of its airing details and thus missed more than what I would have wanted to see from it. Why it ended- I’m guessing that it was a lack of interest or something like that. A major cause to its end might be that it aired on Saturdays and never on weekdays. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There aren’t really box sets to this collection (yet at least), although some episodes are out on DVD. If this did have a full box set, then I might be interested in it, although I doubt that I would get it in the end, because I have a desire for too many things anyways. Grade: B.

Endurance: Show history- This aired for a while for around six seasons. What’s it about- Kids compete in challenges and try to eliminate the other teams. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it looked good. My viewing habits- I might have seen parts of just one season, but don’t think that I saw any other seasons. Where it aired- This was a Discovery Kid’s Show and I watched it via NBC. What I liked about it- The show had an easy to follow format and wasn’t too hard to understand. What I didn’t like about it- Most kid’s shows are educational in some way, but this one didn’t really teach people life lessons or anything like that. More thoughts on it- Basically, this was just a kid version of Survivor. Why it ended- I’m not sure, but I’m guessing that there was a lack of further interest in it. What current shows are like it- American Grit, Survivor, and The Amazing Race. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any. If there were, then I might consider getting it. Grade: C+.

The Emperor’s New School: Show history- This is a continuation of the movie The Emperor’s New Groove. What’s it about- The emperor has to go to school for some odd reason in order to continue to serve in office. Why I’ve seen it- I liked the movie so figured that I would probably like this as well. My viewing habits- I watched what I could see of this, although it wasn’t as much as I could have considering how it didn’t all air on the network that I watched it on. Where it aired- This was a show related to one of the Disney channels (perhaps toon Disney) and it aired on ABC on Saturdays when I watched it. What I liked about it- It seemed to teach good lessons about life. What I didn’t like about it- It seems to just blatantly ignore many of the events of the movie and probably would have worked better if it was set before the movie and not after it. Some of it was dumb and repetitive. More thoughts on it- The show could have been improved on in some ways, but was still good enough in the end. Why it ended- All things end, although I’m not sure why this one did. What current shows are like it- none that I can think of offhand. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any DVDs. If there were, I’d put it at a toss-up. Grade: C.

The Batman: Show history- This had a pretty modest run for a kid’s show. What’s it about- Basically, this is a cartoon about batman. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested enough in it. My viewing habits- I never cared enough about trying to watch it and only did because I didn’t care about anything else at the time. Where it aired- This was part of the Kids WB line-up that at this point was airing on the CW network. What I liked about it- The show had interesting plots and a recurring storyline to keep people interested in different things. What I didn’t like about it- Some of it wasn’t as creative as it could otherwise be. There didn’t seem to be an educational focus to most of it. More thoughts on it- It was a pretty good take on batman, if you wanted a kid friendly version of it. Some of the villain team up storylines seemed pretty obvious at points. Why it ended- There wasn’t any further interest in it is my guess at least. What current shows are like it- Gotham. DVD suggestion- I’d put this at a toss-up. Grade: B.

Farmer Wants a Wife: Show history- This only lasted one season. What’s it about- A reality show, ten women from the city compete for the affections of a farmer. Why I’ve seen it- My family was interested in it despite originally not thinking it would be something that we’d like. My viewing habits- I saw nearly all of this, if not all. Where it aired- It was on the CW, another in a long stream of failed attempts to find a reality show that would last that wasn’t America’s Next Top Model. What I liked about it- The show seemed nice in different ways. What I didn’t like about it- The show had the same, usual drama that you would expect from a show like this. More thoughts on it- I don’t know if the couple is still together, but I hope that they are. One could call this The Bachelor on a farm instead of in a mansion. Why it ended- Low ratings are my guess. What current shows are like it- The Bachelor. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any DVDs of it and I’m not sure it would be worth it anyways, even though I did like the show. I still wouldn’t care enough to see it again. Grade: B.

Care Bears: Adventures in Care-a-lot: Show history- This lasted for maybe a few seasons or less. What’s it about- We see the adventures of the care bears. Why I’ve seen it- It looked good to me and I like the care bears. My viewing habits- Like all Saturday morning kids shows, I saw what I could of this. Where it aired- It was on CBS. What I liked about it- There was actually conflict sometimes and it wasn’t just the sweet adventures of people with fairly minor problems. There’s a villain. What I didn’t like about it- The show seemed to play into different character types at times. More thoughts on it- I don’t remember much about other care bear adventures that may have appeared on TV and might not have seen much, if any, of this. Why it ended- Everything ends and a lot of the Saturday morning shows are notorious for not lasting even if there’s no real good reason why. What current shows are like it- none that I can think of. DVD suggestion- There aren’t box sets of this, only select episode releases. Like a lot of these shows that I like, I would recommend it, but not be interested enough to get it. Grade: B.

ChalkZone: Show history- This lasted for a while. What’s it about- A boy has magic chalk that takes him to a world where chalk characters live. Why I’ve seen it- It looked good enough, although I’m not sure entirely why I watched it. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this. Where it aired- It aired primarily on Nickelodeon and I saw it through CBS. What I liked about it- The plot was pretty good and there were some good lessons in there. What I didn’t like about it- There wasn’t as much focus in the world they made up since the characters who used both worlds were limited. More thoughts on it- I liked the show a lot and couldn’t find much wrong with it. Why it ended- I’m guessing that it was lack of further interest in the show. What current shows are like it- I have no idea since I don’t know what a lot of what current kid’s shows are. DVD suggestion- There aren’t DVDs, but I would be interested in it if there were, if only to see what all I’ve missed of it. Grade: A.

Moonlight: Show history- This aired for one season in primetime. What’s it about- A vampire falls in love with a human woman he saved as a child from his evil ex who turned him. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it would be interesting. My viewing habits- I missed a lot of it when it first aired, only I have since seen every episode. Where it aired- This was a CBS show. What I liked about it- The show was pretty well written most of the time. What I didn’t like about it- Not everything was resolved. More thoughts on it- I enjoyed the show a lot and is one of the reasons why I watch shows on Fridays now when I didn’t use to. Why it ended- There were many factors. It had a bad timeslot on Fridays. The writer’s strike messed it up some. What current shows are like it- The Originals and Supernatural. DVD suggestion- I have this and it’s only a sixteen episode commitment for the whole series so I suggest that people get it to, provided that they like paranormal romance in some way. Grade: A.

Temptation: Show history- This aired in syndication. What’s it about- A game show, people compete for prizes while also being tempted to lose money. Why I’ve seen it- It aired at what was a good time for me on days I wasn’t in school. My viewing habits- I only watched it once as I was less than impressed by it. Where it aired- This was syndicated on various networks for a season. What I liked about it- It ended. What I didn’t like about it- The show seemed overall dull and pointless. More thoughts on it- This was a short waste of time for me. Why it ended- It had horribly low ratings. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There aren’t DVDs and I wouldn’t recommend them anyways. Grade: F.

Notes from the Underbelly: Show history- This aired for maybe around two seasons or so. What’s it about- This is a sitcom about pregnancy and new parenthood. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it looked good or something like that. Maybe I just had the time to watch it and chose to use it spending it. My viewing habits- I think that I saw most of what aired in the US. Where it aired- This was an ABC show. What I liked about it- The show worked for the most part. What I didn’t like about it- It wasn’t as funny as one would like or expect from your average sitcom. More thoughts on it- It was a pretty good and decent show. Why it ended- People didn’t watch it and there were probably complications due to the writer’s strike. What current shows are like it- The Big Bang Theory and Mom. DVD suggestion- There are not DVDs of this. I might want it, if only to see the good chunk that didn’t air in US after it stopped airing on ABC. Grade: B-.

Shark: Show history- This aired for two seasons. What’s it about- A lawyer decides to switch from defending people to prosecuting them. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it would be good. My viewing habits- I saw select, random episodes. Where it aired- This was a CBS show. What I liked about it- The show was a pretty good legal drama. What I didn’t like about it- Some of this didn’t work right in terms of plots and what the characters did. More thoughts on it- I liked it and was upset when it was cancelled, although I have since moved on. Why it ended- I think it was low ratings or something like that. What current shows are like it- Bull. DVD suggestion- I would recommend it, but only the first season is on DVD. I don’t know if that will change in the future or not. Grade: B+.

Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!: Show history- This is part of the Scooby-Doo franchise and aired for a bit as part of Kids WB. What’s it about- A departure from the usual format for Scooby-Doo, instead of them solving mysteries as a whole team, it largely focuses on just the two main characters with some occasional appearances from the rest of the team. This team, Shaggy gets a lot of money and they have to fight against a villain. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested enough in the franchise to give this a shot as well. My viewing habits- I saw what I could of this. Where it aired- It aired on the CW as part of their Saturday morning programming. What I liked about it- The show was different. What I didn’t like about it- The show could seem lame at times. It is very different than what most people would expect from the Scooby-Doo franchise. More thoughts on it- This is probably regarded as the worst of the franchise. Why it ended- Everything ends at some point. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There are no box sets of this, but I think that some select episodes of it are on DVD. Still, I wouldn’t get it as it wasn’t that good a show. Grade: C-.

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Show history- This aired for a while on Disney channel and might have been its longest running show at some point. What’s it about- Twin boys live in a hotel with their mother and other quirky characters. Why I’ve seen it- Like a lot of kid’s shows at the time, if I was interested in it enough, I would watch it at least once. My viewing habits- I’m running out of ways to say that I watched what I could or cared about. Where it aired- While this was mostly a Disney channel show, I saw it on ABC were it also aired. What I liked about it- The show was good, interesting, and worked. What I didn’t like about it- Some of it seemed hard to believe or otherwise unrealistic. More thoughts on it- This was a pretty good show in my mind. Why it ended- Everything ends and they wanted to switch this to a new spin-off instead of continuing with this current show. What current shows are like it- Life in Pieces. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any yet and if there were, I’d put this at a toss-up. Grade: B-.

The Zula Patrol: Show history- This aired for a few seasons. What’s it about- A group of friendly aliens from a planet called Zula teach us lessons largely about space and our solar system while having to deal with villains every now and then. Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to watch for one reason or another. My viewing habits- I watched when I cared and was able to. Where it aired- This was originally on PBS at one point, but I largely knew it from Qubo on NBC. What I liked about it- The show taught a lot of different things in addition to space stuff. It was nice and informative. What I didn’t like about it- Some of this was more cartoony than I would like, such as them given the planets voices and faces. More thoughts on it- I don’t know if it taught me anything new that late in life, but it was still a fun show to watch at the time. Why it ended- I don’t know why. Maybe funding ran out. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any DVDs. If there were, I would put it at a toss-up unless you are a science teacher for lower grades. Grade: B+.

Power of 10: Show history- This aired for a bit, around a single season or maybe a bit more. What’s it about- People compete in a game show where they have to guess how people surveyed would have answered in a question. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it might be good. My viewing habits- I watched what I could of it, which might have been a lot of it, actually. Where it aired- This was a CBS show. What I liked about it- The show is pretty straightforward. What I didn’t like about it- The show could have been better with how much money you could keep if you got something wrong. More thoughts on it- This show is notable for having its very first contestant win $1,000,000. Why it ended- It was probably low ratings and the desire to have Drew Carrey, the host of this show, do The Price is Right, although he might have been doing both. Most primetime game shows like this never last anyways. What current shows are like it- Who Wants to be a Millionaire? DVD suggestion- There probably won’t ever be DVDs of this, not that they’d be much interesting anyways. Grade: C.

Back to You: Show history- This only aired for one season. What’s it about- A person moves back to his hometown to be a newscaster there and learns that his old fame had a child of his. It is a sitcom, despite how serious it might sound. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested enough in it or something like that. It is hard to remember with some of these. My viewing habits- I didn’t see all of this, but I saw a lot of it when it aired. Where it aired- This was a FOX show. What I liked about it- Like a lot of good comedies, it can have a serious subject matter and still address it in a mostly good way. What I didn’t like about it- The show wasn’t as funny as it could be and a lot of what happened in it was kind of dumb and cliché. More thoughts on it- Nearly everyone important on this show moved to ABC for part of the next season. Why it ended- Low ratings are the guess and it wasn’t really a stand-out form of entertainment. What current shows are like it- Kevin Can Wait. DVD suggestion- While this is out, I wouldn’t get it as there are better things out there. Grade: C-.

Legion of Super Heroes: Show history- This aired for two seasons as part of Kids WB. What’s it about- An animated show, it features a bunch of DC comics characters who form a team to fight villains and other threats. This is unrelated to any other form of this concept used elsewhere. Why I’ve seen it- It looked good to me. My viewing habits- I might have watched nearly all of this, if not all. Where it aired- This was on the CW network on Saturday mornings. What I liked about it- The show had interesting plots and was pretty good. What I didn’t like about it- This didn’t have life lessons in it. The ending left more to be desired. More thoughts on it- It was a pretty good show for the most part that I still like despite the last minute cliffhanger. Why it ended- There wasn’t enough interest in it. What current shows are like it- Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash. DVD suggestion- There are no box sets, although some select episodes are released. If this were all out, I’d put it at a toss-up. Grade: B.

Merv Griffin’s Crosswords: Show history- This aired in syndication for just one single season. What’s it about- People compete to solve a crossword puzzle with the winner possibly getting a bigger prize. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it would be good and interesting. My viewing habits- I watched a lot of this when I could. When I wasn’t in school, this would be my main lunchtime show. Where it aired- This was a syndicated show, meaning that it would be on whatever network would show it. What I liked about it- The show was fun to watch and pretty entertaining for me. What I didn’t like about it- Some of the format was poorly designed and lead to dumb reasons for a person to win. More thoughts on it- This was at one point my favorite game show and maybe still is in a way. Why it ended- There were terrible ratings for it so it was replaced by other things. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There aren’t any and even if there were, it might not be worth it anyways. Grade: A-.

DragonflyTV: Show history- This aired for a while on PBS. What’s it about- Basically, a lot of people do things that teach about various sciences and other things too. Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in it. My viewing habits- I watched as much of this as I could, although I don’t know if it was all of it or not. Where it aired- It was on PBS mostly, although it still airs on other networks at times. What I liked about it- It was quite informative about various things. What I didn’t like about it- Some of the later seasons were more like advertisements. More thoughts on it- I might have liked the earlier seasons better, but I think that all of them were good in the end. Why it ended- My guess is a lack of funding. Plus, it aired normally on just Saturdays and not weekdays like most long running PBS shows do. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- There are none that I know of. If there were, it might be good to get, if only to educate people you might be thinking. Grade: B.

Tom and Jerry Tales: Show history- This aired for a while on Kids WB. What’s it about- We see short segments that are an updated version of the classic Tom and Jerry cartoons. Why I’ve seen it- I liked the original cartoons so I thought that I might as well watch this as well. My viewing habits- I watched a lot of this, although it wasn’t as high a priority as some other things were. Where it aired- This was on the CW on Saturday mornings. What I liked about it- It seemed pretty true to the original. What I didn’t like about it- There wasn’t any real educational value in this. More thoughts on it- This is one of the only things that I’ve seen that fit three different stories into one episode. Why it ended- Maybe not enough people liked it, but it is hard to tell even though I did look up information about it. What current shows are like it- none. DVD suggestion- Select episodes are on DVD, but the whole series is not available. Even then, it might be good depending on if you like this sort of thing or not. Grade: B-.

This is not the end of the reviews of 2008’s shows. But now I’m switching from whole series to just some specific seasons that aired in 2008. I wish that I could remember some more of them well, but this is about it. Plus, I’m only sticking pretty much to Power Rangers and shows that I blog about. Maybe you’ll see more seasons in the future.

Power Rangers: Jungle Fury: Show history- This was more towards the end of the Disney era of Power Rangers and the last one to air its original episodes on multiple networks. What’s it about- An ancient evil is awakened leading animal based rangers to fight against it. Why I’ve seen it- I watched all of the Power Ranger seasons at the time since they still aired on network TV. My viewing habits- I don’t know for sure if I saw all of it, but think that I saw most of it. Where it aired- This aired on a lot of different channels, ABC being one of them and the one that I watched it off of. What makes it different than other seasons- While the animal theme had been used before in the show, it was mainly different for having little connections to any other season. What I liked about it- The plot was pretty straightforward and you’d know what to expect from it. What I didn’t like about it- Some of it seemed to jump from place to place. It seemed unoriginal compared to other seasons before it. More thoughts on it- It seemed pretty average compared to most seasons. Where it ranks among other seasons- I’d put it towards the lower groupings of seasons, although it wasn’t too bad. DVD suggestion- Maybe this is worth it, but it seems more like for the completionists. Grade: C.

Survivor: Micronesia: Show history- This was the sixteenth season of Survivor. What’s it about- A tribe of ten new players faced a tribe of ten returning players. Why I’ve seen it- I always watch a new Survivor season. My viewing habits- I might have seen all of this when it first aired, although I’m not entirely sure if I did. Where it aired- It was on CBS like all the other seasons. What makes it different than other seasons- This was the first time to pit new players versus returning players in the format that it did. What I liked about it- There was a lot of great game play, an interesting cast, and wonderful moments. What I didn’t like about it- It seemed like the returning players had too much of an advantage over the others even without them really having one. More thoughts on it- This is one of my favorite seasons of the show. Where it ranks among other seasons- This would be around the top tier for me, although I forget how high it is. DVD suggestion- I would highly recommend this season. Grade: A.

Survivor: Gabon: Show history- This was the seventeenth season of Survivor. What’s it about- A group of new players compete against each other in Africa. Why I’ve seen it- I always watch a new Survivor season when it airs. My viewing habits- I probably saw most of this season when it first aired, if not all of it. Where it aired- It was a CBS show and the first one to be filmed in high definition, I believe. What makes it different than other seasons- Exile Island was different in that one could get luxury there if they chose or look for the immunity idol. There were two tribe swaps, which is unusual for the show. What I liked about it- The winner was a mostly good one in the end. What I didn’t like about it- Nothing really interesting happened in it. The cast was largely either forgettable or annoying. A lot of bad players made it far in the game. More thoughts on it- I really hated this season for the most part, although it wasn’t bad enough that I’d rank it as the absolute lowest. Where it ranks among other seasons- I believe this was the third worst season of the show thus far. DVD suggestion- If you want to get all of the seasons, then get it. Otherwise, there’s not much of a reason to relive it. Grade: D-.

The Late Late Show with James Corden Drinking Game

Well, I don't know how I lost so much time recently. I was wanting to do a different post, but it isn't ready yet, so I'll have to settle for a drinking game to share again. Hopefully you'll see the planned post for this week sometime next week. I can't remember without looking up all of the drinking games that I have shared thus far. But what I know I haven't done is shared a drinking game of this version of The Late Late Show. I know that I did a drinking game of Craig Ferguson's version of it. So I might as well get to this newer version. Remember that drinking games are played at one's own risk and I take no responsibility for any personal harm or injury that one might incur when one chooses to play one that I share. Now, let's get to my idea for how to drink to James Corden.

  • Take a shot if Reggie acts weird in any way.

Comedy Pairs: Shows that are Linked Together

One of the things that I’ve noticed happens a lot in TV is that if you want to watch a comedy, then you’d better like the show that airs with it. Unless, of course, you are like me and watching multiple shows at the same time. Still, it seems that far too often, they air a good sitcom with a bad sitcom. Sometimes you are lucky and get two good ones or even get two bad ones that you can just ignore. But I thought that I would do this post on the subject in question.

You see, a lot of the times, there is a strong show that is used to be the lead-in of whatever new shows might be after it. There aren’t that many times where you’d see a newer show leading the hour. It can happen at times, but not too much. Normally the stronger show starts on the hour and the weaker or newer show starts at something 30.

Another thing to look out for with comedy pairs is something that I like to call the switch. This means that the one that starts earlier switches with the one that airs later so that the one that aired later is now airing earlier and the one that was airing earlier is now airing later. An example of this is when The Muppets was airing at 7:00 and Fresh off the Boat was airing at 7:30. (This is in Central Standard Time, in case you are confused.) At a point during this season, Fresh off the Boat was moved to 7:00 while The Muppets then aired at 7:30. What’s notable about the switch is that the show that now airs later is in every case I can think of where this happened (which isn’t many) ended up cancelled at the end of the season in question.

It is possible and likely that one part of the comedy pair will always be the same from season to season while another part will be changing from time to time each different season or even part of the same season in question. Once CBS found out what a rating hit The Big Bang Theory was, there were many different shows that would air after it. They would normally all get good ratings and stay around in the future because people didn’t want to abandon that show for something else since there was no other choice most times in terms of what to watch.

I don’t know what else there is to state on this topic. Normally, I’m annoyed by what there is in terms of comedy pairs as it normally isn’t the something I like for the whole hour. And it can be annoying as well because there normally aren’t comedies airing against each other. Well, sometimes there are. But that’s pretty much it for this post.

When Shows Disappear from the Schedule

If you pay attention to the schedules of shows, you would notice the strange thing of when shows vanish from it. Sometimes, it will actually return at some point, just having an odd hiatus, sometimes that isn’t planned. Other times, you know it is gone for a while but will be coming back at some point. Still, this is an odd thing and doesn’t always mean a show is getting cancelled. I thought that I would explain more about this event in this post.

One of the examples of this that I can think of when a show disappeared from the schedule without being cancelled (at the time, at least) was the show Stalker when airing. It had a cliffhanger into some sort of hiatus, but we couldn’t tell at first if it was gone forever as I didn’t know when or if it was coming back in the future. Only it did return in time for May sweeps only to be cancelled forever after another cliffhanger that thankfully wasn’t as bad.

A different type of example of a show that seems to disappear is when a season starts and it doesn’t have a return date. For example, Shades of Blue does not yet have a return date even though it is going to air more this season. Sometimes it can be over a year before a show returns on network TV. This was normally something that wouldn’t happen that much, if at all. But now it seems to happen every now and then with different shows. It can be hard to know whether or not to write them off as cancelled. But they aren’t always cancelled.

Something very important to note is that often when a show is gone from the schedule, it is cancelled. And don’t ever listen to a network saying that a show isn’t cancelled. 95% of the time when they say that, then a show really is cancelled. Maybe they will never own up to it and never cancelled it officially. Maybe they will come May or some other time. And there are rare times when it isn’t actually cancelled yet is still pulled from the schedule for some odd reason.

I don’t know of what else there is to say in this blog post so I’m going to wrap it up here with this ending and not say much more. It is possible that you will be seeing more of this blog in the future, but it might not happen as soon as I’m wanting to. Be on the lookout for some random posts on certain days that I’ll mention in the lead that could become regular times for me to post this blog. I’ll let you know if these Saturday updates ever go away.

Mondays in Primetime Version 5

Mondays are a day that I’ve had mixed feelings about at times, but they tend to have good shows a lot of the time now. NBC shows a lot of different things over time. ABC airs Dancing with the Stars in the spring and fall, The Bachelor in the winter, and The Bachelorette during the summer. It airs other things throughout the year. The Good Doctor is the current end of their schedule. CBS shows various comedies right now at this time before ending with Scorpion. FOX is currently airing The Resident and Lucifer. The CW airs Supergirl.

Kevin Can Wait: Status- Currently on CBS at 8/7 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I almost always watch a CBS show at least once. Description- It seems to be about a man who just retired, or wanted to, at least, but it could be about any number of things that could evolve over time. Notable People- Kevin James, who was on King of Queens before starring in many movies, is the main character of this show. Gary Valentine, also from King of Queens, is another character. Leah Remini, also a former star of King of Queens in addition to once co-hosting The Talk, is yet another character. Pros- It isn’t bad. Enough about it is quality entertainment. It is funny a lot of the time. You know what to expect. Cons- A lot of the plots are weaker than they should be. There are too many people in the cast. It can be rather dumb at times. It might have been better starting out. Note to Parents- Considering all the smut that you might be used to, this is actually much more acceptable for most ages. Recommendation- I’d put this at a toss-up myself. You may like it and if you don’t, it’s not like there’s that much of a long story that people care about. My Viewing Habits- I might have missed some episodes here and there, but I have more or less watched this from the very beginning. Prediction- It could last longer and I think that it will last until next season at least. Reception: generally negative. Grade: B-.

Lucifer: Status- This show is on FOX at 8/7 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- Promise to watch one midseason show from each network and the thought that it might be interesting. Noteworthiness- This is adapted from a comic book. Description- For some odd reason, the devil, known as Lucifer, decides to help people solve crimes, although that is based on just my limited perspective on the show. Pros- The show is different than the usual show. It can also be kind of interesting. Cons- It is hard to tell entirely what this show is about. It seems kind of dumb and lame. Note to Parents- This is probably safe for teenagers, but not much younger. I can’t give good advice to parents having not seen most episodes. Just know that it doesn’t glorify Satan because it makes him seem rather lame. Recommendation- I wouldn’t watch it. My Viewing Habits- I only watched this once and have no interest in seeing it again. Prediction- It will probably keep lasting for now. Reception: mixed to positive. Grade: D.

Supergirl: Status- Currently on the CW at 8/7 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it looked good and I watch every show on CBS at least once, which is the network it used to air on before it switched. Noteworthiness- This is adapted from DC comics. It has links to the same world as The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow. It was on CBS for the first season before moving to the CW for the future where it is likely to stay. Description- Superman’s cousin, who is female, becomes a superhero herself fighting various alien outlaws and other supernatural creatures. Pros- This show is quite good and interesting, seeing a previously unknown superhero (to me, at least) get her own story. Cons- There could be potential flaws with being politically correct. Some of the subplots can seem like a waste. Note to Parents- From what I’ve seen thus far, this show is pretty acceptable to a younger audience, although there still might be more violence than they would need. There is also a gay main character, if that affects anything in your mind. Recommendation- I think that this is a good show and worth watching. My Viewing Habits- I might have seen every episode thus far or close enough to it if I haven’t seen every one. Prediction- It has good ratings and is part of a large, connected universe so it would probably last a good while. Reception: highly positive. Grade: A-.

Man with a Plan: Status- Currently on CBS at 8:30/7:30 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- This is the usual courtesy watch that I give most CBS shows. Description- A man’s wife goes back to work leaving him to take over more as a househusband. Notable People- Matt LeBlanc, who was in Friends, is the main character on this show. Pros- It seems to be a bit different than a lot of other shows based on the main gender switch in the plot. Cons- This show was overall dull and pointless. There wasn’t too it in terms of quality. Note to Parents- I’m not sure what I can tell you based on just one episode, except that there was a lot of language, although nothing that had to be censored. Recommendation- I wouldn’t watch this because it was too dumb in my mind. My Viewing Habits- I saw the first episode and won’t be watching this again. Prediction- It might be staying around for a while at least. Reception: generally negative. Grade: D.

Superior Donuts: Status- Currently on CBS at 9/8 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- As usual, it was because this is on CBS. Noteworthiness- This is based on a play of the same name. Description- This is a comedy show about people in a donut shop. Notable People- This show features Katey Sagel from Married… with Children, 8 Simple Rules, Futurama, A to Z, and Sons of Anarchy. Pros- This might be liked by fans of 2 Broke Girls. Cons- The show was really lame and uncreative. It didn’t really offer much. Note to Parents- I don’t think there’s much to worry about this except for possibly offensive stereotypes. Recommendation- Don’t watch this. My Viewing Habits- I saw this once and won’t be seeing it a second time. Prediction- It seems like it might last for now. Reception: mixed. Grade: D.

The Resident: Status- Currently on FOX at 9/8 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I watched this for my Good Wife blog and to fulfill my promise to watch a midseason replacement on FOX this season. Description- This is a medical drama that features different doctors, some new, and there are various problems at the hospital at times. It seems a rather complicated plot that is hard to sum up easily. It should make more sense as it goes along. Notable People- This has Matt Czuchry who used to star in The Good Wife and Gilmore girls. It also has Emily VanCamp who starred on Brothers and Sisters as well as Revenge. Pros- It points out the flaws that can happen in a hospital, but does it in a good way. It can seem more humanizing than most medical dramas that I’ve seen in the past. Cons- It seems similar to House. The lead can be strange and arrogant. Note to Parents- It airs with a content adversary warning in some episodes so that’s all you really need to know about it. Recommendation- I’d say that this is good to stay into if you want to. My Viewing Habits- I plan to watch this until the very end. Whether I’ll be able to see every episode or not remains to be seen. Prediction- It is hard to tell for sure this early, but I think that it might last a bit for now. Reception: mixed. Grade: B. New review

Better Late Than Never: Status- Currently on NBC at 9/8 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it might be interesting. Noteworthiness- This might have more unusual airing time for a network show. It is also adapted from a foreign show. Description- A reality show, it has four older men and one younger “sidekick” visiting foreign countries as part of a bucket list journey. Notable People- This has William Shatner, most notable for his role on Star Trek. It also has Henry Winkler, most well known for role on Happy Days. Pros- The show is informative about different countries. Cons- The format is overall pretty strange. Note to Parents- What’s I’ve seen of this is pretty acceptable for kids to watch. There might be some things that aren’t okay, but probably not too much. Recommendation- I think that most people would like it. My viewing habits- I watch this when it works out, but don’t care that much if I miss it or not. Prediction- This probably won’t last and even if it does, it might just be to cover weird times in the schedule. Reception: good. Grade: C+. New review

9JKL: Status- Currently on CBS at 9:30/8:30 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I watch a CBS show at least once most of the time. Noteworthiness- The main star of this based this off of his own life in a way. He and his wife created this show together. Description- A man lives in an apartment building right next to other family members of his leading to wild antics as usual. Notable People- This stars Liza Lapira who starred in NCIS, Dollhouse, Traffic Light, Super Fun Night, Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23, Battle Creek, and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life, among other things. Pros- One would know what to expect from a show like this. Cons- This has about all the bad stuff that you would typically find in a sitcom like amoral characters. The writing and acting could use some work. The side characters can be dumb. Note to Parents- This has what you might expect in terms of what is and isn’t acceptable for kids to watch. Recommendation- I’d put this at a toss-up. I watch it, but I wouldn’t be upset if I missed it. My Viewing Habits- I’ve missed some of this due to not caring as much about it as I could. But I do tend to watch it whenever I can. Prediction- I don’t think that this will last much longer. Reception: generally unfavorable. Grade: C. New review

Scorpion: Status- It is currently on CBS at 10/9 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- I thought that I might like it. Noteworthiness- This is inspired by the real life of Walter O’Brian. How much of it is fictionalized is unknown, but guessed to be a lot. Description- This show is about Walter O’Brian and a team of geniuses that he leads. Notable People- Robert Patrick from the Unit is on this show. Pros- It’s a pretty interesting drama and it not being the typical drama makes it better. Cons- The show has a predictable format. It can be overdramatized. Some of it is hard to believe. Note to Parents- This probably isn’t full of objectionable material that you’d typically see in a primetime drama. Sex is usually not present and violence in it is typically at a minimum. Recommendation- I like it and suggest that other people watch it. My Viewing Habits- I’m not sure if I’ve seen all of this, but I have been watching this since its first episode. Prediction- I think that this show will last a while still, although there are now some warning signs about its long term chances. Reception: mixed. Grade: A.

The Good Doctor: Status- Currently on ABC at 10/9 Central on Mondays. Why I’ve seen it- It looked like a pretty good show to me. Noteworthiness- This is an adaptation of a South Korean show. Description- A young doctor with autism starts working with other doctors and has to overcome stigma. Notable People- Hill Harper, from CSI: New York, stars on this show as well. David Shore, the creator of House, is also the creator of this show as well. Pros- This is wonderful with well written characters, plots, and overall believable medical situations. Cons- Not all the characters are nice people. I know that happens a lot and it can be needed at times, but it can still be a problem. Note to Parents- This is mostly acceptable for kids, but there are some problems with it in terms of what age can watch. I’d say that pre-teens and older should be good with this. Recommendation- I think that everyone should watch this. My Viewing Habits- I don’t know if I’ve seen every episode, but I’ll watch this as much as I can over the course of time. Prediction- This is getting good ratings for now so it will stay for as long as that lasts. Reception: mixed to positive. Grade: A+. New review
