Fall Shows 2019 Part 1

I don’t yet know when I’ll be able to see what shows or even if I’ll be able to see all of the shows that I was originally wanting to see. I had to split this into different parts and will have to share some of what has already aired later when I’m able to see it as I’m not able to see it just yet.

Evil: Show Description- A woman and others have to deal with the idea of what makes one evil and if there are supernatural abilities behind it or not. Behind the Scenes- This is created by Robert and Michelle King who also did The Good Wife, The Good Fight, and BrainDead. It stars Michael Emerson from Person of Interest, Lost, and Arrow. It replaces The Amazing Race, if only for a moment. My Thoughts- It seems quite interesting for now, although it might be too mysterious at some points in the long term. I just hope they decide whether or not to include supernatural elements for sure later. I give it three out of five stars. Long Term Prospects- This doesn’t seem likely to last. Where to Find- On CBS at 10/9 Central on Thursdays

Bob Hearts Abishola: Show Description- A man falls for a medical person who treated him after he was sent to the hospital. Behind the Scenes- This stars Billy Gardel from Mike and Molly. It also was created by Chuck Lorre who also did Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, and Mom. My Thoughts- This had some parts that worked and could be interesting long term. But I wasn’t finding much good or funny in it. I give it two out of five stars. Long Term Prospects- This is likely to stay for now. Where to Find- On CBS at 8:30/7:30 Central on Mondays

Emergence: Show Description- A strange girl shows up at a crash site as is believed to be an alien. She is taken into the care of a woman trying to be helpful. Behind the Scenes- There’s nothing to add here. My Thoughts- It could be too mysterious in the beginning so we’ll have to see what happens with it in the long term scheme of things. It seems good enough for now. I give it three out of five stars. Long Term Prospects- This seems likely to stay for now. Where to Find- On ABC at 10/9 Central on Tuesdays

The Unicorn: Show Description- A widower decides to go out into the dating world again. Behind the Scenes- This replaces The Big Bang Theory. It also stars Omar Miller from The Eleventh Hour and CSI: Miami. My Thoughts- It doesn’t seem to offer much to it. At least there is a good thought behind the basic premise of the show. Long Term Prospects- This is likely to stay around for now. Where to Find- On CBS at 8:30/7:30 Central on Thursdays

Carol’s Second Act: Show Description- A woman starts her second career being a doctor with a bunch of younger medical residents. Behind the Scenes- This stars Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle, and Back to You. It replaces Life in Pieces. My Thoughts- The show was well enough to work. It could be better, but isn’t bad, I give it three out of five stars. Long Term Prospects- It is likely to stay based on initial ratings which could quickly change. Where to Find- On CBS at 9:30/8:30 Central on Thursdays

The Kelly Clarkson Show: Show Description- Kelly Clarkson hosts a talk show. Behind the Scenes- Kelly Clarkson is a singer, known for winning American Idol and being a judge on The Voice. My Thoughts- It can seem strange and more different than it needs to be. But it seems good enough to keep staying into if I’m not doing anything else at the time. I give it three out of five stars. Long Term Prospects- Maybe this will last, but I’m not sure that it will. Where to Find- This is syndicated so whether or not it airs or when you’ll be able to see it will rely on what your local area has to offer.

Bless the Harts: Show Description- An animated show, it relates to a family of some sort. Behind the Scenes- This replaces Rel after not having a replacement for a while. It stars Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph from Saturday Night Live. My Thoughts- It seemed strange and not in a good way. Maybe it can seem good, but only in the sense that other shows like it are good. Long Term Prospects- This might be more likely to stay for now. Where to Find- On FOX at 8:30/7:30 Central on Sundays

Well, that’s about it for this post. I hope to be back soon with more shows that I want to review that are new this year. We’ll see if I can see them or not. I may have to stop blogging about shows entirely if I am doing a job that conflict with shows. Still, stay tuned for a part 2 of this post. To be continued…

Three Types of Series Finales

While I wanted to do a post on some of the new fall shows today, that will have to wait until later. For now, I will do a quick post on the three types of way a show can end each season. There is a good finale, a bad finale, or anything that’s in between.

The good finale may not be as rare as some people think. Some go over and beyond what they need to do in order to provide a good ending to the season. Others just wind up with a good way of ending the show or just fails at being bad or even average. Whatever the reason, good finales are what people want to aim for and they happen more often than you might think.

The bad finale is never what people aim for. Many think they are making a good finale, but fans of all sorts disagree and learn that the show’s ending is quite terrible. Typically, all shows that end on some sort of cliffhanger fall in this category. Some just needed to take out a last scene that shouldn’t have been there when the show ended. Other times, it isn’t a cliffhanger but is still a terrible way to end the whole series and makes old fans abandon their previous support of the show.

Average finales are the last one. They aren’t really good or bad. Things are resolved or there is not enough unresolved to bother people. But it wasn’t quite a stand out finale that people thought that they could make. People make think it is bad at first, only to realize that it is not as bad as it could be. But it still could have been better if not done poorly either.

That’s about it for this post. Monday’s post should hopefully have some of what I want to do with the reviews of new fall shows. I would do more reviews or hope to in the future, but I am running out of time in order to watch things and it could be a while before I do and get caught up as a result. I guess we will see what happens and I might not have time to watch any TV depending on what else is going on during my life at the time.

What Sweeps Are

Maybe you hear about it or maybe you don’t. Most fans of TV shows know that there are some times of the year when shows are more in danger of being pulled from the schedule than they might otherwise be. That means that sweeps are happening.

What are sweeps? Basically, there is a period of time when networks will pull out all the stops to make sure that they are airing the best programs around. The most well known month of sweeps is November and that is why shows tended to be pulled from the schedule around that time. It’s not as common to do that anymore due to networks not having as much courage as they used to.

Still, sweeps are very important in terms of the TV world. You will see shows still today randomly get pulled from the schedule around sweeps months when they might have seemed okay before. We saw that with The Millers then later The McCarthys. May is the most dangerous time with some shows as it is nearing the end and it may be gone forever before then like Powerless. Other times, they will air the rest of the season before May sweeps start and have something new or reliable repeats instead.

If ratings are always important, you might wonder why sweeps offer more power to the time in general. Well, sweeps are basically more important than just the regular season is. It seems odd that they would do such a thing, but they do. They always will do sweeps and will keep doing it forever. I doubt that it will ever go away. And despite this short, quickly written post, I hope that you can understand it now too. I’ll see you next week.

The Sequel Series

While not common, there is a type of series that happens on TV that shows up from time to time. While you might know the concept of a spin-off, when one series inspires another one, you might not know about the sequel series as it isn’t as common. In truth, the sequel series is a type of spin-off as they are always related like that. But what are examples and what makes them different? Well, I might as well get into that in this post.

Sometimes we have had shows from a franchise go away to be replaced sooner or later with another show in the franchise. The earliest example of this was Scooby Doo. But none of the new shows were a sequel series. They were related shows and part of the same franchise. But a sequel series is different in other ways than that.

One of the best examples that I can think of that a sequel series is relates to Power Rangers. It started with one simple show. But then it continued from Mighty Morphing Power Rangers to Power Rangers Zeo. Later, each season was like a different show with each new season with the only connection being that they are always about Power Rangers, a team of spandex fighting ninjas fighting against bad guys. But each was connected in some way and a sequel to the previous season.

What makes this different from a regular spin-off is that the two shows never co-exist at the same time. One in effect replaces the other one. If it doesn’t happen exactly or right away, it is a show in the same universe as the first show set after the first show is over. It often has the same characters or at least one but might not have any of them at all.

Nowadays, the TV world has brought us new shows that were a sequel series. After The Originals ended, the franchise continued with Legacies. The Good Fight was a continuation of The Good Wife franchise with largely only one of the characters continuing on. The Conners was a good example of this, even if it was brought about by unusual circumstances brought on by Roseanne’s cancellation. It nonetheless continued the story of that franchise.

Often, a sequel series isn’t needed at all. This is largely because it can often just continue in the same show even without people that we saw originally. Other times, it is unfeasible to try to continue the show with or without certain changes taking place or it otherwise makes sense to make it a different show with a different premise with only some of the same people in it.

Now when someone new hosts a talk show, this isn’t a sequel series. This is simply The Tonight Show with Jay Leno being hosted by someone new and different. They are even considered separate shows due to the separate hosts even if it is under the same general name. These shows also don’t overlap in any ways since they don’t have people hosting at the same time.

There’s not really much else to say in this post. I hope that you can understand what the premise and idea of a sequel series is if you didn’t know it before. I don’t even know if it has a real name for sure or if this is something that I just named myself.

Late Airing Summer Shows

Well I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that this probably won't be that great of a post as I'm just coming up with something random on the fly. The good news is that weekly updates of this blog are back now and should be on most Mondays for the near future unless something else is posted instead. I'll try to keep you updated if I can. Anyways, enjoy this blog post.

I have no idea what is with the trend this year of there being late airing summer shows. We normally don't see things like this on TV. By late airing summer shows, I mean shows that weren't on TV until late July or even August. This seems so unusual to me and I'm not sure why this would be the case. Most of the shows that aired this lately were on the CW. They were airing what had previously on CW Seed, their streaming service. But I don't know why they decided to air that instead of just reruns that a lot of us would have liked and been okay with seeing.

What is with the trend? Why do this at all? Don't they realize that people probably wouldn't care at this point in the season what new shows are on? Well, television has experienced something lately known as peak TV. What that basically boils down to meaning is that a lot of shows that are new and in some cases good will be seen on TV a lot throughout the whole year in order to compete with cable networks and not lose as many viewers to them during the summer. Thus, they want to air something and will normally not care in most cases if it is a bad show or not. They just want new programs on TV.

I don't think that we've seen too much of it this season, but this could become the new normal for TV. It is always changing and we'll only see throughout time what all could keep changing on TV over and over again. Do you know why certain changes happen? I don't. All I know is that this is something that happened this season that will probably keep happening in other seasons. I'll be back next week with hopefully a better post. Also, let me know whether or not I should post blog posts on my facebook page still or not as I'm not sure that I will for a while.
