Cancelled Shows 2019-2020

Sorry that this is after midnight and might be considered a Sunday post instead of the Saturday post that it really is. Also sorry that there wasn't a final Tuesday post, but that will come later as I'm now switching back and forth between posting my TV blog on Tuesday and my Madam Secretary blog then. I hope to be back with more posts that aren't this late ever again, but at least I got this post done now.

It is sad that I keep doing these so late over and over again. These are supposed to happen in the year that these shows were finally cancelled (at least some of them), but I’m always doing this now in the next season all the time it seems. Also, with all of the changes due to coronavirus, I should make a note that due to it, it will be unknown if some shows are possibly coming back at all. I will include them in the next mass post on cancelled shows from a season (in this case, 2020-2021) which will hopefully be sooner this time around (but I make no promises) in case there are more examples of things like Stumptown that get unrenewed as it is sometimes known.

Blindspot: Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in the idea of it. Description- For mysterious reasons, a woman has amnesia and tattoos all over her body and there are crimes solved based off of this. Pros- The show is intriguing and interesting. The plot likes to evolve so you don’t always know what to expect each season. Cons- The show can seem similar to other types of dramas in a way. It can also be more violent than it needs to be. It is often confusing. It can be hard to understand and follow. The show may seem a bit scatterbrained and it seems like they are trying to do a female version of Jason Bourne. Note to Parents- I’d say that this is something that teenagers can watch, but not any younger than that. I think that all the episodes I’ve seen thus far were TV14. Recommendation- I’d say that this is worth watching. My Viewing Habits- I missed a lot of this for various reasons, but have seen it and more or less been into it at times since the very first episode. I had problems keeping up with it when it was on its second season and reception problems also hampered the problem of keeping up with it. I only saw what I did of the final season of it by watching it online. Cancellation reasons- The ratings declined enough that they figured that they should end it. Similar shows- MacGyver, Manifest, and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- I would recommend getting the whole series. Reception: positive. Grade: B+.

The Good Place: Why I’ve seen it- In order to review this for another blog of mine, I watched it. Description- A comedy, a woman finds out that she is dead, but in the good place. The main problem: she’s not supposed to be there. The show evolved beyond that. Notable People- Ted Danson, who was in many shows in the past, among them Cheers, Becker, CSI, and CSI: Cyber, is a character on the show. Kristen Bell, who did many movies and Veronica Mars, is the main character. Pros- The show is different and interesting. It tries to keep religion out of it so as to not offend anyone. The writing is quite good. It has evolved enough times to keep the show interesting still. Cons- The idea of things going wrong with the good place in death is a bit hard to believe. It lacks a certain amount of charm that you would want it to have. It doesn’t seem as funny as it could be. Note to Parents- This is borderline is terms of what is acceptable to let your kids watch or not. It is better for kids than most shows, but still has some issues. Recommendation- I say that you should watch this if you can because it is pretty good. My viewing habits- I first watched this started at the first episode, but have not seen all of it. Cancellation reasons- The people who did the show wanted it to end so it ended as a result, which always happens from time to time with certain shows. Similar shows: Bob hearts Abishola, The Neighborhood, and The Unicorn. DVD suggestion- I recommend getting the whole series. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

Instinct: Why I’ve seen it- I normally always watch a CBS show at least once. Noteworthiness- This is adapted from a James Patterson book. Description- It is hard to tell for sure that much about it right off the bat, but it seems to be about a professor and author who is starting to work with the police to solve crimes. Notable People- This has Alan Cumming who is known for being on Broadway and formerly starring in The Good Wife. Pros- It seems pretty interesting in some places. Cons- It can seem too similar to the show Castle in some ways. It doesn’t seem entirely original. Note to Parents- This has the same sort of things wrong with it that you’d find in most shows. Recommendation- I think that it is good to watch if you like the average murder mystery. My Viewing Habits- While I have not seen every episode, I’ve seen this since the first one aired. Cancellation reasons- I’m not entirely sure, but figure that they didn’t care that much about the show and decided to end it as a result. It did not help that they had what became the final season delayed until the summer when no one seems to care much about what is on. Similar shows- The Rookie, FBI, and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- It might be good if there are any. Reception: mixed. Grade: B-.

Reef Break: Why I’ve seen it- I watched it online to review it for another blog. Description- A former thief helps the police solve cases, I think. Notable People- Poppy Montgomery from Without a Trace is in this TV show. Pros- It seems pretty simple and one would know what to expect from it. Cons- It can seem run of the mill and ordinary. It ended on a cliffhanger. Note to Parents- This has about the same amount of objectionable material that you’d find in other shows. Recommendation- Don’t bother with this anymore. Cancellation reasons- It had low ratings that even its decreased cost couldn’t save it from in the end. Similar shows- Blood and Treasure, Prodigal Son, and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- Don’t get it if it comes out. Reception: negative. Grade: D-.

Criminal Minds: Why I’ve seen it- It was during summer reruns (I think) that I first saw this, even though I could have potentially seen it sooner. I was interested in seeing it at least once. Noteworthiness- The first main character left over creative differences on this show and the thought that it was too dark. Description- A law enforcement agency solves crimes. Notable People- Adam Rodriguez, from CSI: Miami, is in this. Aisha Tyler, formerly of The Talk, is in this as well. Pros- It is similar to other dramas so you know what to expect. Cons- It is too dark. One wonders how it can be allowed on network television. Note to Parents- This show is quite gruesome and graphic with its violence and crime. Don’t let people under the age of 13 watch this. Recommendation- I don’t like it and don’t recommend it. My Viewing Habits- I only watched this once and have no interest in ever seeing it again. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were waning for quite some time so CBS decided that this season would be its last one. Similar shows- FBI: Most Wanted, SVU, Prodigal Son, The Blacklist, and Riverdale. DVD suggestion- Don’t waste your money on this. Reception: negative. Grade: F.

Modern Family: Why I’ve seen it- Free time at the time and general interest in the show. I kept coming back to this and saw it a lot in syndication. Noteworthiness- It is a fake documentary meaning it presents itself as a reality show, when it isn’t (although certain “reality” shows are that way). It is a popular show winning awards. Description- A look at the people an extended family of “normal” ones and not so normal ones. Notable People- Ed O’Neil from Married with Children is on this show. Pros- This is a funny comedy that attracts all different people like the families that are like this. There are good episodes a lot of the time. Cons- The episodes do not always have enough material in them and move by too quickly. Inappropriate material shows up often. They tend to ignore some of the filming aspects of the show opening it up to serious plot holes such as characters wanting proof of something, only to not consider the people that are filming them. Note to Parents- This is borderline like a bunch of other shows like it. Recommendation- Watch this show if you like it. You probably will. My Viewing Habits- I haven’t always been good with watching the new episodes as they aired and saw far more of it in syndication than live for the first time. But, I tend to watch any and all of the new episodes live when I can, although I miss a lot during December and Lent since I’m not always back home in time at the start of the episode. Cancellation reasons- Someone either involved with the network or with the show wanted it to end so they ended it as a result. Similar show: Young Sheldon. DVD suggestion- They might be worth if it you can’t just get what you want of out of syndication instead. Reception: mostly positive. Grade: A.

God Friended Me: Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in it. Description- A man gets a friend request from God or someone calling himself that and his life changes with the lives of those around him and those he gets requests from. Notable People- Violett Beane, who has had recurring roles in The Resident and The Flash, is a character on this show. Greg Berlanti, who produces too many TV shows to name at once, helps with this show. Pros- The show has good characters who are willing to help others. Cons- Not much happens in it. I’m not sure where they are going with it. It can be sappy at times. The plots are often predictable. I don’t think that they ever revealed the mystery of the God account. Note to Parents- There is a gay character. The show doesn’t take sides with religion, even if it seems to favor the Atheist side at times. Recommendation- I think that it is worth watching for those who care enough about it. My Viewing Habits- I have not seen every episode, but have seen this since the beginning. Cancellation reasons- For one reason or another, the network wanted it to end as they must not have found that much of an audience with it. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, then it might be worth it since it is only a two season investment. Reception: mixed to positive. Grade: B.

Elementary: Why I’ve seen it- I generally like mystery shows, even if I’m not that familiar with this famous detective. Noteworthiness- This is another look at the Sherlock Holmes franchise set in modern day New York City. Description- Sherlock Holmes helps the police solve crimes in the present time. Pros- It can appeal to those that aren’t already fans of Sherlock Holmes. It is a bigger hit than most people would think. The show is pretty interesting. Cons- Not everyone would like the new interpretation of it such as Watson being female for some odd reason, it being set in the modern day, or it being in New York City instead of London. It can also be described as Americanizing a British hit (which almost never works out). Some of what happens is easy to miss at times. Recommendation- It is a good show to keep watching. My Viewing Habits- While I’ve missed episodes here and there, I’ve watched it since the very beginning and will watch it until it ends because of the blog I now have about it which you will see in the link. Cancellation reasons- CBS didn’t own the show so that was an issue for it staying forward. The ratings got lower as things went along so CBS just wanted to pull the plug, although it lasted longer than some might have thought that it would. Similar shows- NCIS, FBI, and Blue Bloods. DVD suggestion- I plan to get it and I recommend it for others as well. Reception: positive. Grade: A.

Set up to blog link: http://adamdeckerelementarytvshow.blogspot.com/ I have a blog about the show and it is still updated with what the cast is or could be doing now in the future. It also talks some about a few other things here and there at times. But it will link to this blog at times too.

Single Parents: Why I’ve seen it- It worked out for me to watch it so I did. Description- We see different parents who aren’t in a relationship form a bond with each other. Notable People- This has Taran Killam formerly of Saturday Night Live. It also stars Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond and ‘Til Death. Pros- There are some bright spots in here. Cons- The plot largely doesn’t work as a whole. It isn’t funny and one doesn’t want to root for these characters. Note to Parents- There were enough issues in this that I think you shouldn’t let kids watch this. Recommendation- Don’t bother with this. My Viewing Habits- I watched the first episode and have never seen it again outside of bits and pieces from other episodes. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were low enough and the network didn’t care enough about keeping it much longer than that. Similar shows- Mom and Last Man Standing. DVD suggestion- Don’t bother with it. Reception: generally favorable. Grade: D.

Arrow: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to watch a CW show that was new at the time. Noteworthiness- This is based off of a DC comics series. It has also created what’s known as the Arrowverse full of other shows on the CW that all share the universe and have related events. Description- This CW drama is about the comic book character Green Arrow. I don’t know if it is accurate or not to the source material. Pros- It seems interesting enough to keep potential viewers coming back and watching it again. Cons- It seems like every other superhero drama. The links to the other shows can be quite a bother. It is not as good as the rest of the franchise. Note to Parents- This can be a bit gruesome at times so preteens and younger shouldn’t watch. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. If you have time to watch it, then you should. If you aren’t interested, then you aren’t really missing out on anything. If you watch other shows in the franchise, then you should watch this or you will be confused by everything. My Viewing Habits- I started watching some in the first season and then lost interest for a while. Around the fourth season, due to its connections with The Flash, I started online watching it and then kept up with it better again when it no longer competed with Survivor. I try to watch every new episode now. Cancellation reasons- The CW wanted it to end so it did. Similar shows- Batwoman, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. DVD suggestion- I would recommend it. Just know that it has connections to a lot of other shows that you’ll have to get into as well. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

Stumptown: Why I’ve seen it- I had a dream about it so I watched it once it worked out to see it at least once. Noteworthiness- It is adapted from a comic book series. Description- A female PI solves cases. Notable People- Colbie Smolders from How I Met Your Mother and the MCU is the lead of this show. Jack Johnson from New Girl is on this as well. Pros- It isn’t too bad as it seems done well enough. Cons- It didn’t seem to have much to it. Note to Parents- This has the usual problems so don’t let too young people watch this. Recommendation- It wasn’t bad, just not worth staying into. My Viewing Habits- I only watched one episode and have no interest in staying into this. Cancellation reasons- While this was originally renewed for a second season, too many delays in production brought forth by coronavirus that would not have had this ready by April brought forth an unrenewal as they never made any of the next planned season. Similar shows- MacGyver and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- I wouldn’t bother with this. Reception: generally favorable. Grade: D.

Designated Survivor: Why I’ve seen it- I liked the idea of the premise of the show so I wanted to see it as a result. Noteworthiness- This is inspired by a real part of the US political process where a person in the line of succession is taken to a secure, unknown location with a group of people in case something bad were to happen during the State of the Union address or something like that. The series starts with such a nightmare scenario becoming reality. It also aired on ABC for two seasons before being cancelled and brought back by Netflix for just one season until it was cancelled again. Description- A man has to deal with suddenly becoming president of the United States and dealing with various crises. Notable People- Keither Sutherland, from 24, is the main character. Kal Penn, from How I Met Your Mother and House, was also on this show. It also had Maggie Q from Nikita and Stalker. Another character was played by Zoe McLellan, who was on NCIS: New Orleans. Pros- The show started out strong and stayed to be quite the interesting show going on throughout a lot of its early run. Cons- It seemed to run out of steam more towards the end of its second season and changed a lot over time, losing sight of its original premise and at one point trying to be a courtroom drama instead of what it really was. Note to Parents- There is a lot of content that kids shouldn’t be exposed to and the Netflix episodes featured swearing and possibly other bad content. Recommendation- I do like this show, but am a bit unsure what to say since I haven’t seen any of the final season such as how it ends. I still think that it is good, if more so starting out than towards the end of the second season. My Viewing Habits- I watched most of what I could of it during its first two seasons, although I missed a lot of the second one due to work and Lent. I never saw any of the third season. Cancellation reasons- The show had a high turnover of showrunners during its time on ABC. After Netflix brought it back, they thought that how they ended it was a good way in the end so they got rid of it. Similar show: The Good Fight. DVD suggestion- I think that this might be a good investment. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

Original review with outdated information: Designated Survivor: Why I’ve seen it- It looked really good and interesting. Plus, it might have been under my obligation to watch one of the new fall shows on each network. Noteworthiness- The initial situation is based on something that can actually happen based on the idea of someone in the line of succession to the president is taken to a secure location in case a bad situation takes out the president and all others in the line of succession. Description- A cabinet member in the line of succession is taken to a secure place during the state of the union address to ensure that there would be a president if something bad were to happen. Something bad does happen and the designated survivor does become president. But there’s a lot more to the show than just that. Notable People- Keifer Sutherland, who was on 24 and Touch, is the main character, the new president. Kal Penn, who was on House, had roles on other TV shows, and even worked for the administration of a real president, is another character. Maggie Q, who was on Nikita, Stalker, and other things, is another character. The actress who played Brody on NCIS: New Orleans is on this show now. Pros- It has an interesting and gripping story. Cons- This show may be too complicated for its own good. It may also change too much and be too different as it goes along. Note to Parents- There is enough in here that is bad for some kids, but it isn’t as bad as it could be. Recommendation- I say that this is good and that people should watch it. My Viewing Habits- I have started watching from the beginning, but have missed a lot of it as it goes on. Special note- While ABC did cancel this show, Netflix has picked it up for at least one future season. We will see how much longer it lasts beyond that. Similar show: Madam Secretary. DVD suggestion- This might be good, but I would not know if it is worth the risk considering how you won’t know for sure what will happen next on the show. Reception: generally favorable. Grade: B-.

Council of Dads: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to see a new midseason show on NBC so I saw this at some point online. Noteworthiness- This is based on a book that a man wrote in the event that he were to die. Description- Before dying of cancer, a man creates a group of friends to be a council of dads to his children. Pros- It has a great idea and a lot of potential to it. Cons- It can seem similar in parts to Parenthood and other shows like it. Parts of it can move too quickly while other parts move too slowly. Note to Parents- This deals with a serious topic: death. It also has a transgender character. I would not know much offhand what other topics were dealt with based on the one episode I saw of it. But it was likely to mention other things as well. Recommendation- I don’t know what to put here, but it would not be that much of a commitment, since it only lasted one season. My Viewing Habits- I only saw the first episode and didn’t watch anymore since it didn’t seem likely to last beyond one season. Cancellation reasons- It premiered too late in the schedule to last, having aired most of its season during the early summer month. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- I wouldn’t get it since I didn’t care that much about the show myself, but that doesn’t mean the show is bad. Reception: mixed. Grade: B.

Katy Keene: Why I’ve seen it- I tend to watch a new CW show at least once. Noteworthiness- This is adapted from characters based off of Archie Comics. It is also set in the world of Riverdale. Description- A fashionista and her friends have adventures in New York City. Notable People- Lucy Hale, who was also in Life Sentence and Pretty Little Liars, plays the main character. Pros- It is more simple than what you would get out of most shows nowadays. Cons- It has nothing to it to keep it interesting. Note to Parents- This seems better in quality than some shows, but still has issues at times. For one, there is a character who cross dresses. Recommendation- This isn’t good so don’t bother with it. My Viewing Habits- I could not get behind a show on the fashion industry and won’t see this again, having only seen the first episode. Cancellation reasons- Pretty much all of the other CW shows (if not all) had been renewed (that wasn’t already ending) by the time that it premiered, making it unlikely that it would stay around for future seasons. The announcement of the cancellation came late. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- Don’t bother with it if there are any. Reception: positive. Grade: D.

Emergence: Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in it and wanted to see at least one new fall show that aired on ABC. Description- A strange girl shows up at a crash site as is believed to be an alien. She is taken into the care of a woman trying to be helpful. It turns out that the kid is AI. Notable People- This has Owain Yeoman, from The Mentalist. Pros- The show is very interesting with all kinds of layers of intrigue and mystery. Cons- It could be too mysterious throughout. I do not think that everything was properly resolved, although I’m not bothered enough by the ending to have it ruin the show for me. Note to Parents- This had some issues, but wasn’t too bad. Recommendation- I’d have to say that this is worth seeing. My Viewing Habits- I might have seen every episode, but am not sure that I did in the end. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were too low to work and keep lasting. Similar shows- Roswell, New Mexico and Pandora. DVD suggestion- If there are any, they would be worth it as it is a good show to keep up with and not much of a commitment. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

Almost Family: Why I’ve seen it- I try to watch a new FOX show at least once now. Noteworthiness- This is adapted from an Australian show called Sisters. Description- A woman’s life is turned upside down when she learns that her father was misusing his role at a sperm clinic in many ways, most notably by being a sperm donor to tons of women unknowing to them, meaning that she has countless siblings. Pros- It works in some ways. Cons- The plot is a bit unbelievable. It is too weird in other ways. Note to Parents- This has tons of controversies such as the idea of rape being in there. There was also at least one lesbian character. Recommendation- I wouldn’t bother with it but only due to issues that were then outside of my control and also it not seeming to last. My Viewing Habits- I only saw this once when it worked out for me to see it as I was often too busy with work for it at the time and then it looked like it was going to be cancelled anyways so there wasn’t much of a point to keeping up with it beyond that. Cancellation reasons- The show was controversial from the start with the idea of medical rape being brought it and it wasn’t helped by allegations of sexual misconduct against a star of it. They moved it to Saturdays and made its cancellation official shortly after its final episode aired. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, don’t bother with it. Reception: negative. Grade: D-.

Madam Secretary: Why I’ve seen it- I almost always watch a CBS show at least once. Description- This show is about a woman who becomes secretary of state and all the drama that unfolds with it. It is best thought of as a political drama. Pros- This show is pretty good. The characters are interesting. It is an interesting drama with enough mystery going on to make people interested in it. The show is also pretty realistic, to an extent. Cons- I don’t know if it runs the risk of getting too political based on the undisclosed parties the people are part of. Plus, like other shows, it is in the strange situation of being in a reality that is both real and made up instead of a completely made up reality which would probably be better for it. Also, the number of crisis that the country faces each episode, even though they are relatively minor, can be a bit much, even if it’s needed for the plot of the show. Note to Parents- I’d have to say that this be a decision that goes either way with your views on what kids should watch. Preteens might be okay watching it, but I think that the really young kids should be avoiding this. With as late as it can wind up airing on a school night, you might be better off not letting them watch it since your kids would need sleep instead, although this point is moot now. Recommendation- I ultimately think that it is worth the watch. My Viewing Habits- I have seen this since the very first episode and keep watching to blog about every episode in the future as you’ll see in the link below. I don’t know if I have seen every episode, though, but I plan on staying with this until the very end. Cancellation reasons- There were a lot of factors that went into its end, but I think that a bad timeslot was the main factor although part of it was just wanting to end the show the way that they wanted to. Similar show: The Good Fight. DVD suggestion- I would recommend it. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

Set up to blog link: https://adamdeckermadamsecretaryblog.blogspot.com Like Elementary, this blog is now in a cast update stage that will affect this blog at times. I also cover politics a lot in this blog as well so keep up with it if you want to know what I want to say about this world that we live in today.

Outmatched: Why I’ve seen it: I watch a new FOX show at least once now. Description- Two parents have to deal with the fact that their three kids were revealed to be geniuses with high IQs. It is a comedy. Pros- It is trying for something. Cons- It didn’t seem to offer much to it as it wasn’t that funny or any good. Note to Parents- I have no idea what to say here. Some of this was fine for kids in terms of that quality. Recommendation- Don’t bother with this. My Viewing Habits- I only saw the first episode and never saw it again. Cancellation reasons- The ratings sucked and people didn’t like it so they pulled it from the schedule before it even finished airing. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it wouldn’t be worth is so don’t get it. Reception: negative. Grade: F.

Schooled: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to watch a new midseason ABC show when it premiered and figured that this was the only one that might work out. Noteworthiness- This show is a spin-off of The Goldbergs. It has the same creator too. It was once rejected as a pilot, but the rejected pilot aired as an episode of The Goldbergs and it was the picked up as a series later. Description- Some of the characters from The Goldbergs, most of them from the school based part of the show, are featured upon in the 90s instead of the 80s. Notable People- Brett Dier who also starred in Jane the Virgin, stars on this show as well. Pros- I think that it works well as a show and comedy. Everything that you like about the original show is here too. Cons- It can have some of the main flaws of The Goldbergs as well and might not work as well on its own, that is, if you are not also a fan of The Goldbergs. Note to Parents- This is largely okay based on what I’ve seen thus far, which wasn’t much. There are some of the usual issues, but not too much. Recommendation- I would recommend watching this if you don’t have anything else going on at the time since it would work well in good ways. My Viewing Habits- I watched a small part of the first season and one episode of the second season outside of the final one. Cancellation reasons- This came as a bit of a surprise, but could have been related to allegations against a star, but I don’t think that it was known until after it was over. The ratings were lower than what they needed in order for it to stay around for the future. Similar shows- The Goldbergs and Young Sheldon. DVD suggestion- Since this was only on for two seasons, then it wouldn’t be that much of a commitment and would work well as a purchase. Reception: somewhat positive. Grade: B+.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Why I’ve seen it- Interest in the Marvel world after having seen various superhero movies based on their works. Description- This show is about an organization that deals primarily with superheroes and becomes heroes of their own, although mostly people without powers. Notable People- This show is done by Joss Whedon, who is known for creating science fiction shows that enjoy cult status and are typically not always enjoyed by everyone. Examples include Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Buffy the Vampire. Pros- It is considered a good show to some people. You don’t have to be a fan of the rest of the Marvel world to understand this show. Cons- I feel like there could be more in it. It seems to be lacking the heroes and the action of the movies as well as the drama content. There is also a connection between this and the rest of the Marvel world that can confuse people who don’t see the movies. Note to Parents- This is a bit questionable in terms of content for kids, mostly due to the violence of the show. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Watch it if you like it. My viewing habits- I was a fan of this from the beginning, but various problems with the reception of ABC where I live caused me to miss a whole ton of this in the end. I would have liked to see more of it than I did, but maybe I still could in the future. Cancellation reasons- This show was on the bubble throughout its whole run and it is only a matter of time once that happens when they decide to end the show with just one final season which they did. Similar shows- Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. DVD suggestion- I think that it is worth it so I’d say get it. Reception: somewhat positive. Grade: B+.

Deputy: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to see a new FOX show at least once. Description- A man finds out that he is now a sheriff due to the death of the previous one and rules possibly considered outdated. Pros- It did not seem as bad as a lot of shows are nowadays. Cons- It wasn’t that interesting. Note to Parents- This has the usual problems, more so with violence than anything else. Recommendation- I won’t recommend it. My Viewing Habits- I only saw this once and then never saw it again due to lack of interest. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were so horrible that they pulled the show before all of it had aired. Similar shows- Walker and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- If there are any, don’t get it as it is not good. Reception: mixed. Grade: D.

Carol’s Second Act: Why I’ve seen it- I like to watch a CBS show at least once. Description- A woman starts her second career being a doctor with a bunch of younger medical residents. Notable People- This stars Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle, and Back to You. This also stars Ashley Tisdale from the Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Pros- The show works and makes sense. Cons- Some of it seems dumb and could be better. Note to Parents- This might have some questionable stuff, but probably not too much. Recommendation- I think that it is worth watching if you aren’t into anything else. My Viewing Habits- I have seen this since the first episode and don’t plan to stop watching any time soon. I do not know if I saw every episode of this or not. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were low enough, even though it was a bit of a surprise to see this end. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- I do not know what to say here as there was a bit of a cliffhanger towards the end, but I’d still say that if there are any, it would be worth it. Reception: somewhat positive. Grade: C.

Broke: Why I’ve seen it- I watch a new CBS show at least once. Description- A single mother has to deal with some of her former rich family members moving in after they lose their money. Notable People- Pauley Perrette from NCIS is the lead of this show. Jamie Camill from Jane the Virgin plays another character. Pros- It seems like it is good as it focuses on real world problems while also being funny about it in some ways. Cons- Some of the acting can seem off. The plot can be improved on.  Note to Parents- There are some issues with this, but not too many. There is a gay character. Recommendation- I think that it is good and think that others should watch it too. My Viewing Habits- While I did not watch all of it, I was a fan of it from the first episode onward. Cancellation reasons- It premiered at a very bad time in the world where a pandemic brought forth a reception so people didn’t watch it because they did not see more people with financial issues. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it might be worth it, but probably not by much. Reception: mixed. Grade: C.

Paradise Hotel: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to see any new FOX show from a certain point forward. Noteworthiness- This is based on international shows and could be considered a revival. Description- A reality show, people have to stick together or be eliminated from the show. Pros- It didn’t last long. Cons- Not much could be gathered from this in a positive light. All they really wanted from this is sex and drama and that’s what they got from it. Note to Parents- Do not ever let your kids watch anything that is like this. Recommendation- Don’t watch this ever. My Viewing Habits- I only saw this once and did not tune into it ever again. Cancellation reasons- People didn’t watch it so they got rid of it as a result of that fact. Similar show: Love Island. DVD suggestion- There won’t be any, not that they would be worth seeing or getting. Reception: mixed to negative. Grade: F.

Bluff City Law: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to watch a new NBC fall show at least once so I saw it when it aired at one point. Description- This is a courtroom drama. Pros- It seemed pretty interesting in some ways. Cons- It seemed to generic and might not have even focused that much on the courtroom aspect of the show. Note to Parents- I have no idea what to say here. Recommendation- Toss-up. My Viewing Habits- I gave this a courtesy watch, but largely didn’t stick with it because it seemed like it wasn’t going to last than any other season. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were too low. Similar shows- Bull, SVU, and All Rise. DVD suggestion- I have no idea what to say here and don’t know if there are any of this in the first place. Reception: mixed to negative. Grade: C-.

BH90210: Why I’ve seen it- I now watch a new FOX show at least once now. Noteworthiness- It is part of the 90210 franchise. Description- I have no idea what to make of the plot outside of celebrities from 90210 playing fictionalized versions of themselves in a show that is very Meta. Notable People- A lot of the cast of the original is on this show too. We see people like Jennie Garth, who was on What I Like About You, Shannon Doherty, who was on the original Charmed, and various others. Pros- It tries to do something different. Cons- This doesn’t work for me as it is far too Meta and might work better as a proper reboot instead of pseudo reality. Note to Parents- There is a lot of the usual problems in this show that you’d see elsewhere as well. Recommendation- Don’t bother with it. My Viewing Habits- I only saw this once and never wanted to see it again. Cancellation reasons- Enough people must not have liked it as they got rid of it. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it would not be worth it in the end. Reception: positive. Grade: F.

How to Get Away with Murder: Why I’ve seen it- At the time, I wanted to watch something at this timeslot and chose this over Chicago P.D. Description- A woman teaches an intense legal class and various cases are solved as well. Pros- The show is just as mysterious as it should be without being too much of a problem. Cons- There are some bad morals present and plots can see too drawn out. Note to Parents- This isn’t something kids should watch as there are a lot of more adult themes in it. Recommendation- This might be good, but if you aren’t into it yet, don’t bother with it. It is a good show if you don’t care what you’ve missed. My Viewing Habits- I joined at the start of a new season and plan to stick with it when I can until the end. Cancellation reasons- They wanted it to end so that’s what they did with it. Similar shows- Bull, SVU, and All Rise. DVD suggestion- I never really understood this show and did not like the end, largely due to ABC lying about a key plot point in the promos for the final season by saying that the main character would be killed when she wasn’t in the end and thus cannot recommend getting this on DVD as a result. Reception: generally positive. Grade: C.

Tommy: Why I’ve seen it- I watch a new CBS show at least once. Description- After a person goes through a scandal, a lesbian is turned into the chief of police in Los Angeles. Pros- It seems pretty interesting. Cons- Not much separates it from other shows like it. Note to Parents- This has the usual problems. I’m not sure if they ever aired a PG episode or if they were all TV14. Recommendation- This was a good show. My Viewing Habits- I don’t think that I saw every episode of this (or maybe I did), but I was a fan of this from the very beginning. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were too low so they got rid of it as a result. Similar shows- SVU and Blue Bloods. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it might be worth it. Reception: mixed. Grade: B.

Hawaii Five-0: Why I’ve seen it- Devotion to the CBS network and curious about what the show is about. Noteworthiness- It is a remake of an old, popular show. It is also part of the NCIS franchise. Description- An elite crime fighting team works in Hawaii to solve cases. Notable People- Alex O’Loughlin, known for his work on the TV shows Moonlight, Three Rivers, and various movies, is on this show as the main character. Jorge Garcia from Lost is in this as well. Pros- This show is actually filmed where it set. It is an interesting drama. The bickering between the two leads is entertaining. Cons- Some of the methods the characters use to catch the perps are unethical. Since it is a remake, it could just be considered trying to reclaim what it once was. Note to Parents- I’d say maybe on this, although it is probably better to not let your kids watch this unless they are teenagers. Recommendation- Watch this if you have the time to. My viewing habits- I have watched since the first episode, although I have not seen every one yet. Cancellation reasons- Someone wanted it to end so they ended it. It was old. Similar shows- Blue Bloods and Magnum P.I. DVD suggestion- I think that you should get it. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

First Responders Live: Why I’ve seen it- I try to watch at least one new FOX show now. Noteworthiness- This is an adaptation of Live PD. Description- We see various, real events unfolding live regarding different people in this profession. Pros- It seemed interesting enough. Cons- It seemed like you might not get all out of it since it covered only a limited amount of time which could leave things unresolved for the viewers. Note to Parents- This is probably better off not being watched by kids even though it did air on network TV. Recommendation- It is good to keep up with. My Viewing Habits- I was only able to see this once due to scheduling conflicts at the time. Cancellation reasons- While they did not officially cancel it, since they never brought it back, it is over. It must not have attracted enough of an audience or there were too many controversies in the world for it to be feasible to bring back the next time around. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- I doubt that there would be any or that it would be worth it. Reception: somewhat good. Grade: B-.

What Just Happened? With Fred Savage: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to for one reason or another at least once. Description- Fred Savage hosts a show set after a made up show that doesn’t exist. Notable People- Fred Savage was on The Grinder. Pros- It is different. Cons- It doesn’t work for me as a show as it is too random and doesn’t make a lot of sense. I can’t even tell what it is going for in the end. Note to Parents- This might be okay. It is hard to tell. Recommendation- Don’t bother with it. I mean, the show that supposedly airs before it, The Flare, would have made a far better show than this does. My Viewing Habits- I only watched it once. Cancellation reasons- No one cared about it so I didn’t keep up with it as a result. Similar shows- Saturday Night Live. DVD suggestion- Don’t bother with it. There probably won’t be any in the first place. Reception: bad. Grade: D.

Hypnotize Me: Why I’ve seen it- I watch a new CW show at least once now. Description- A game show, contestants have to do seemingly easy tasks while they are hypnotized into doing completely ridiculous things that get in the way of accomplishing said tasks. Pros- It is quite funny and entertaining. Cons- I question the realism of this show. I mean, people could easily be persuaded to act like idiots just to win money and might not actually be hypnotized in reality. Note to Parents- I don’t think that there was much wrong with this show in terms of content. Recommendation- This is pretty good and worth seeing in the end. My Viewing Habits- I didn’t see all of this, but I saw a lot of what aired. Cancellation reasons- While it wasn’t officially cancelled (although it might still air new episodes on The CW Seed where it was originated from), it is over and the reason is that the network forgot about it as they wanted to air a lot of other things instead. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it would be worth it. Reception: somewhat good. Grade: B.

I Ship it: Why I’ve seen it- I watch a new CW show at least once. Noteworthiness- This aired on the CW for maybe a first season before it returned a while later for another, different one, that might have been related in some ways. Description- A woman who is a fan girl of a show quits her job in order to help work with this other show. It’s a musical at times. Pros- It is different. Cons- It didn’t work as well to me since it seemed kind of sappy in a way and not as realistic as it could be. Note to Parents- This has the usual problems. Recommendation- Don’t bother with it. My Viewing Habits- I only saw the first episode of this. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were very low as even the CW couldn’t keep it. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- Don’t bother if there are any. Reception: somewhat good. Grade: D.

Fresh off the Boat: Why I’ve seen it- It aired with a comedy that I normally watch. Noteworthiness- This is based off of a true story and book, but I don’t know how much. Description- Set in the past, this is a sitcom about an Asian family that moved to America and other friends in their lives. Pros- This is actually quite good in terms of quality. Cons- The show can be weirder than it needs to be. Note to Parents- This is actually quite acceptable in terms of material as I can’t think of much bad in here for kids and other young ones outside of a gay character (that I know some people wouldn’t like but most wouldn’t care about). Recommendation- I would watch this show if you can. My Viewing Habits- I got into it into its second season and have watched on and off as long as it fit in my schedule which it hasn’t always has. Cancellation reasons- The ratings were low enough in recent seasons that they decided to end it. Similar shows: Black-ish and Grown-ish. DVD suggestion- This is worth it so I’d recommend it. Reception: critically acclaimed. Grade: B-.

The Big Stage: Why I’ve seen it- I watch a CW show at least once. Description- This is more or less a talent show. Pros- There aren’t other shows like it. Cons- It doesn’t have much to it. This isn’t even a competition. They just show people doing various things on stage and call it a TV show. Note to Parents- There is nothing wrong with it from what I saw. Recommendation- Don’t bother with it. My Viewing Habits- I didn’t see much of this. Cancellation reasons- While its cancellation wasn’t official, it does not look like it will be coming back unless it will only be on the CW seed. The reason for this was because of a lack of interest in it. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- There won’t be any so don’t get it even if that changes. Reception: mixed. Grade: D.

Spin the Wheel: Why I’ve seen it- I wanted to see a new FOX show once. Description- Contestants compete for cash prizes by answering trivia questions and hoping that a spin of a wheel will go their way. Notable People- Dax Sheppard, formerly of Parenthood, is the host of this show. Pros- It seeks to help the heroes of the world. Cons- There was too much going on at once in this that it didn’t really work for me as a good show. Note to Parents- There was nothing wrong with it that I can remember now. Recommendation- It isn’t worth anything so don’t bother with it. My Viewing Habits- I only saw the first episode of this and none of the others. Cancellation reasons- While not officially cancelled, it could be a lack of interest that did it in. Similar shows- The Wall and The Price is Right. DVD suggestion- There won’t be any and it isn’t worth it anyways. Reception: bad. Grade: D.

The 100: Why I’ve seen it- I thought that it might be good and I promised to watch at least one new midseason replacement from the CW that season. Noteworthiness- It is based off of a book by the same name. How much of it the show sticks to is unknown by me since I haven’t seen the show. Description- This show has a bunch of teenagers in a supernatural/science-fiction setting like many CW shows do. In the future, the earth has been labeled as uninhabitable to live in so one hundred people are sent down to see if living there would work. They are called the hundred, the name of the show. While they are living down there, interesting stuff happens both on earth and in the space station that they came from. And that’s just how the show began as it is constantly changing and completely different now. Pros- This show has good plots at times. Cons- It seems similar to lots of other shows from this network. At best, it is more average than good. Recommendation- I’m not sure that I can get behind this show anymore as it seems to be a shell of its former self. My Viewing Habits- I watched this regularly with the first and second season then lost interest around the third season. I don’t watch it anymore and don’t know if I will ever watch it again, but did return for the last episode. Cancellation reasons- The network stopped caring about it so they got rid of it as a result. If the finale of Supernatural wasn’t delayed, this would have been the longest running show on the CW for its final season. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- Don’t bother with it. Reception: mixed to positive. Grade: D+.

Whistleblower: Why I’ve seen it- I tend to watch most CBS shows at least once. Description- People describe real life cases of calling out wrongdoing in various situations. Pros- It is quite informative. Cons- It isn’t much different from most of the other true crime shows. Note to Parents- There might be some issues with it, but I think that it is probably okay for some older ages, unusual for true crime shows. Recommendation- If you had not seen it, it is worth watching once. But it also isn’t something you’d lose too much out of not seeing. My Viewing Habits- I’ve only seen it twice thus far as it normally doesn’t fit in my schedule. But I do like the show. Cancellation reasons- It wasn’t that much of a show that people on the network cared about in the long term so they got rid of it as a result. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- There are none, but might be worth it. Reception: good. Grade: B+.

48 Hours: NCIS: Why I’ve seen it- I normally watch a show on CBS at least once. Noteworthiness- This is a spin-off of 48 Hours, a true crime show, focusing on cases that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service have worked on. Description- People tell stories of real life cases that NCIS has worked on. Notable People- Rocky Carroll from the show NCIS is the narrator of this show. Pros- If you like and watch 48 Hours, then you would like this show. Cons- This doesn’t seem as good as any of the shows in the NCIS franchise. Note to Parents- I wouldn’t let your kids watch this as it can be rather gruesome. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. If you like true crime, you’ll like this show. If not, then you won’t like this show. My Viewing Habits- I only watched this once. I might watch it again, but I don’t know for sure if I will or not. Cancellation reasons- They were no longer interested in this as a result on the network so they got rid of it. Similar shows- Dateline, 20/20, and The Real NCIS. DVD suggestion- I doubt that there will be any. It wouldn’t be worth it unless you like true crime. Reception: good. Grade: C-.

Flirty Dancing: Why I’ve seen it- I was interested enough in this for some reason. Description- A reality show, a person goes on a blind date with two others. They don’t speak and only dance before the main person decides who to go on a real date with. Pros- It is different. Cons- The premise is a bit contrived in some ways and not much can be gathered from it outside of that. Note to Parents- I don’t think that there was much to this in terms of bad content. Recommendation- This is not any good so don’t watch it if you can. My Viewing Habits- I watched this once and that was it for me. Cancellation reasons- No one cared about this so they got rid of it as a result. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- I do not think that there are any nor would they be worth it. Reception: somewhat good. Grade: D.

Will & Grace: Why I’ve seen it- I was interested in it at times and it worked out for me to see it some more in the future. Noteworthiness- This originally aired for a while in the 90s before it returned for a revival set of seasons nowadays. Description- It is complicated to keep track of what this show it about, only that there are gay characters and a group of friends that have some in that. Pros- The show is well received among many. Cons- The show can be dumb in many ways and not as funny as it could be. Some have not liked the original finale which is a moot point now. Note to Parents- I’d say that there are a lot of issues with it. Recommendation- I didn’t like it when I saw one episode of the revival. I do not remember enough of the original to know if it was better. My Viewing Habits- I saw parts of the original run in syndication and only one of the revival. Cancellation reasons- They wanted to get rid of it after a good run back so they ended it as a result. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- I’m against getting this myself, but that’s because I don’t like the show. Reception: critically acclaimed. Grade: D.

My Last Days: Why I’ve seen it- I tend to watch most new CW shows at least once if and when I can. Noteworthiness- This often airs as short specials for a while and not much else. Description- Dying people do a show based on the last days of their lives as a tribute of sorts. Notable People- Justin Bartha from Jane the Virgin is on this show as well. Pros- It is nice to see these nice things done for these dying people. Cons- One wouldn’t like it if you don’t want to watch things that make you sad. Note to Parents- This probably wouldn’t be too bad in terms of whether or not a kid can watch it, provided they know about such things like death. Recommendation- I think that one should watch this if you can and won’t get upset by it. My Viewing Habits- I’ve only seen this twice as it hasn’t worked out for me to see it that much. Cancellation reasons- While it never aired much and wasn’t officially cancelled, it was pulled from the schedule forever and won’t be coming back, probably due to a lack of interest in it. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- If there are any, it might be good. But it depends on how much of death you can stand because that’s what the focus of the show is about. Reception: good. Grade: B.

Man with a Plan: Why I’ve seen it- This is the usual courtesy watch that I give most CBS shows. Description- A man’s wife goes back to work leaving him to take over more as a househusband. Notable People- Matt LeBlanc, who was in Friends, is the main character on this show. Pros- It seems to be a bit different than a lot of other shows based on the main gender switch in the plot. Cons- This show was overall dull and pointless. There wasn’t too it in terms of quality. Note to Parents- I’m not sure what I can tell you based on just one episode, except that there was a lot of language, although nothing that had to be censored. Recommendation- I wouldn’t watch this because it was too dumb in my mind. My Viewing Habits- I saw the first episode and won’t be watching this again. Cancellation reasons- The network didn’t care much about it as it was frequently delayed until midseason. They decided to pull the plug on the show as a result by ending it after too low ratings, too late a premiere with the fate of other shows already decided, and an idea to get rid of the shows they don’t want because of coronavirus that they don’t think are worth keeping around. Similar show: Last Man Standing. DVD suggestion- Do not get any. Reception: generally negative. Grade: D.

Red Bull Peaking (also known as just Peaking): Why I’ve seen it- It was a new CW show so I saw it as a result. Noteworthiness- This relates to the energy drink somehow. Description- We see the journey of some of the athletes for an event. Pros- There aren’t really shows like this outside of sports networks. Cons- The show is very forgettable and lacks a point. Not enough people saw this on imbd for me to even find a starred rating for it (perhaps I should check rotten tomatoes?) and it does not even have a Wikipedia page. I almost forgot that it was even on until I was working on finally finishing this post. Note to Parents- Nothing seemed bad in terms of content. Recommendation- This isn’t worth it. My Viewing Habits- I only saw this once as one of many courtesy watches. Cancellation reasons- This had perhaps both the worst and shortest time frame that aired of any show in television history as it was only on briefly in September before any other fall shows premiered and after almost any other summer show would have started. They didn’t even bother to make its cancellation official and it is possible that it was merely a special that I mistook as a show. Similar shows- none. DVD suggestion- There won’t be any nor would it be worth it. Reception: unknown. Grade: D.

Other cancelled shows

The Hot Zone: This had Julianna Margulies from The Good Wife in it. It was about fighting ebola, I think, and was only meant as a miniseries so it didn’t have that much of a plan to it in the end. I think that this aired on one of the many cable networks.

The Loudest Voice: This had Josh Charles from The Good Wife in it. It was critical of FOX and affiliates, yet might have even aired on that and made use of Seth MacFarlane who still works on FOX shows. It was only meant as a miniseries. But it focused on real events.

Devs: This had Zach Grenier from The Good Wife in it. It aired on FX. I don’t think that there was much else to say about it other than that its one season run may have come off as a surprise, but this might not have been anything other than the plan.

Indebted: This was an NBC comedy. It only lasted for one season. It had some of the same issues that Broke had, covering some of the same content, but not being something that people wanted in the age of pandemic related recessions.

Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector: This NBC drama was based on a book series and only aired for one season, having too low ratings to last. The plot went unresolved, according to a source that I have read about this.

The Mel Robbins Show: This was a syndicated show that I didn’t know existed until I was looking up some of the shows that were cancelled. I may not like having to have moved all of my blogs to this other laptop of mine, but now I can once again look up shows on a site that somehow won’t load on the older laptop of mine that I have.

Perfect Harmony: A new NBC show was cancelled late as if they forgot that it was even on at some point in the first place, despite being a fall show and not even a summer show which is often when they don’t mention that it is cancelled and thus never is officially.

Empire: A FOX drama, I never really was interested in this at all and never saw it. It aired for a while and was popular among some people. They wanted the show to end so it did, but not in the way that was originally intended due to shutdowns caused by coronavirus. While they still have a plan to do an official finale at one point, they never filmed the last planned episode as they edited footage from what was filmed as the penultimate and one before it as the last one instead.

Grand Hotel: This ABC drama aired during the summer. This might not have been an official cancelation, but I feel that it is worth mentioning. I don’t think that I was interested in this at all, but it could have been a nice show that I never saw.

Sunnyside: This NBC sitcom had the distinction of being the first show of the season that was cancelled. I don’t know what else there is to say about this in the end. But I have to come up with some sort of content that causes at least three lines in this document of mine.

Live PD: While I often never mention shows that are cancelled that weren’t at some point on network TV, this one was very notable. It was a highly rated show that was pulled over the George Floyd protests and the idea that we don’t want to see cops doing bad things on television. Although I should point out that the news should not have been airing his death as much as they did.

The Baker and the Beauty: It seems that every season since The Good Doctor premiered, ABC airs a show after it is done airing that airs a lot over the summer and thus stands no chance of staying on the air. Well, this is what happened and ABC needs to stop doing this unless they want to keep setting up some of their shows for failures.

Bless this Mess: This aired for two seasons on ABC. Its renewal was considered unlikely and often when this happens, it won’t last that much longer. I have no idea what else there is to say about this sitcom as I never really saw it much.

Cops: While I wasn’t sure this was even on after FOX got rid of it, it was still on Spike TV afterwards. They got rid of it in response to the protests of racial injustice that put officers in a bad light and they didn’t want to have any potential controversies as a result.

Bring the Funny: An NBC show, there isn’t much to say about this. I was interested somewhat in this, but obviously not enough to ever see it, but that might have been more related to the network’s often bad reception around the summer than anything else.

The InBetween: This ABC drama was a show focusing on a woman who was somehow given another chance at life, but not her own, but to save another. The touches of Tru Calling were covered in the premise of this, although I never saw this, despite being interested in it. I didn’t care enough.

Family Food Fight: I think that this was an ABC show of some sort that didn’t last and won’t be back. I do not think that they even officially cancelled this because of reasons. This was probably part of their summer fun and games schedule.

List of every cancelled show: Sunnyside, Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, The Mel Robbins Show, Perfect Harmony, Empire, Grand Hotel, Live PD, The Baker and the Beauty, Bless this Mess, Cops, Bring the Funny, The InBetween, Family Food Fight, Indebted, Devs, The Loudest Voice, The Hot Zone, Peaking, Man with a Plan, My Last Days, Will & Grace, Flirty Dancing, 48 Hours: NCIS, Whistleblower, The 100, Spin the Wheel, The Big Stage, Fresh off the Boat, I Ship it, Hypnotize Me, What Just Happened? with Fred Savage, Bluff City Law, First Responders Live, Hawaii Five-0, Tommy, How to Get Away with Murder, BH90210, Carol’s Second Act, Paradise Hotel, Broke, Deputy, Schooled, Outmatched, Madam Secretary, Almost Family, Emergence, Katy Keene, Council of Dads, Designated Survivor, Stumptown, Arrow, Single Parents, Elementary, God Friended Me, Modern Family, Criminal Minds, Reef Break, Instinct, The Good Place, Blindspot, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A Note on Review Discrepancies

If you read my other blogs, then you’ll know that some of what I review in this blog was also put in other blogs as well. I normally try to put them in this blog first and then post a duplicate in the other blog. I then work on doing a more full-fledged review that is put in both blogs, typically this one first. But there have been times where it appears in the other blog first. But that’s not the point of this blog post.

You see, there times when the reviews don’t match up in every accurate way. This is to be expected with other blogs being updated once a month with whatever extra review changes being made that may not appear in this blog at first or at all. But there are many ways that the posts can be different for quite a time and never really appear the same way again.

This isn’t really much of an issue in the end. I just thought that I would post about it here so that you would know that these changes exist and there might be minor differences between each of the blogs that are hard to keep track of and make sure are the same each time. I just hope that they are the same at some point in the end. For now, this is Adam Decker, signing off.

Christmas Commercials 2020

With this year being very different from the other years, then I might as well explain that some of what had happened with the Christmas commercials this year might be different in some ways, but was not really that different. It is really more easy to keep track of what happens during election years since there is typically less. For me, 2018 had more ridiculous political commercials in terms of total numbers in the end. And I didn’t even keep track of it to know for sure. I do have a counter for the overrun of Christmas commercials which I’ll get a bit more into later. This counter can keep the numbers of whatever I pick to be more accurate (hopefully). The overrun number might change by next year’s count as it has in the past.

In 2012, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 27. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 200. In 2013, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 5. The official count before Halloween was 30. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 600. In 2014, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 3. The official count before Halloween was 26. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 700. In 2015, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 13. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 530.

In 2016, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 45. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 386. In 2017, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 78. The official count before December started was 767. In 2018, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 13. The official count before December started was 567. In 2019, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 19. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 487.

Christmas overrun for 2014-2015 is 28 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2015-2016 is 14 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2016-2017 is 55 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2017-2018 is 41 commercials. Christmas overrun for 2018-2019 is 36 commercials.

In 2020, the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 1. The official count before Halloween was 33. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 360. This was not nearly as bad as it could have been, but this was largely due to the shit ton of political commercials in their place. One would think that there would be more in the overrun time frame (as explained in the next paragraph) to make up for it as there was after Christmas of 2016, but this does not appear to be the case this time around. Indeed, the only Christmas commercial that aired was from Liberty Mutual, the company that also sent out robo calls to my house for about 5 times a day for two weeks (or someone claiming to be them did this). At least they are doing another commercial thing now.

Christmas overrun for 2019-2020 is 18. Christmas overrun for 2020-2021 is 16. Christmas overrun means that after Christmas and in a bit of January, you will see Christmas commercials of some type. I’m keeping track of them, although they will always be separate from the main list.

And that’s it for this post. I wish that there was more to say in these posts instead of just making it the same thing (largely) over and over. But I’m glad that I’m caught up and done counting. Like I said, I might not have all of the overrun at the first count and I will be using a clicker (which is what I meant earlier when I said counter) to keep track of the numbers of back to school, political, or Christmas commercials in the future. (I honestly need more than one clicker, but this will help me out much better than just trying to keep track and keep the three themes safe, even if one is only counted on facebook and not on this or any other blog of mine.) Let’s hope that the count is as good and accurate as it can be, although I'm not even sure who all besides me (if anyone) cares about this.

How the NCIS Franchise Dealt with Coronavirus

As a fan of the NCIS franchise, which currently contains the shows on NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I. while also containing the ended shows of JAG, Hawaii Five-0, and Scorpion, it is worth noting that it had decided to do something that would affect the whole franchise. As the title would already tell you, that thing was writing the coronavirus pandemic onto the show. If one show did it, then all of the other shows in the franchise had to adapt as well.

Of course, there first comes the point of making use of old scripts from the rest of the previous planned season that they might as well do. I have no idea just how much different shows did this, if they did this at all in the end. I know that NCIS did this as did NCIS: Los Angeles. I am pretty sure that MacGyver would have been forced to do this as well.

The original show seems to be the most recent of the ones of it (that I’ve seen) that addressed the pandemic by having the most recently aired of the episodes (as of this post) talking about it and being set after the pandemic had started, which one could tell by the characters being in masks. There were even hints about this throughout a lot of the season that they were going to do this because they had set the older episodes in the past with a title card mentioning an old date and time. This was like how the show of JAG set episodes before 9/11 before writing that onto the show.

The Los Angeles based show seemed to go through their planned episodes first and then did some of the pandemic in the storyline. It didn’t seem to have any notable episodes that focused solely on it like some of the others that are on TV that aren’t in the franchise.

The New Orleans based show started the season strong with a two parter on the pandemic. I do not have any idea that it started off with any unmade episodes and it is possible that it didn’t from the previous season that they did. Maybe it was worked into future episodes.

MacGyver seemed to be a bit strange based on some of the timeline. But it wanted to make use of the unmade episodes from the previous season first by setting itself after the pandemic (said to be in 2021 at one point, which we can only hope will be right in the end) but obviously using the old scripts with a few minor tweaks. I say that the timeline was strange as they did a pandemic episode that seemed to be set earlier in the timeline, but didn’t air until recently. I do believe that this somehow had the most unmade episodes because of the pandemic the last season so maybe it was supposed to air through the whole summer at some point.

Magnum P.I. hasn’t seemed to do much with it, other than doing obligatory mentions that there was a pandemic or is one as it is normal otherwise in the plots outside of it. There wasn’t much else to say about this in the end other than that it has covered it some.

And that’s about it for this post. You see, the shows of the remakes of Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I. are considered part of something called Lenkov-verse and are more connected to each other than the rest of the NCIS franchise, but I don’t feel like calling it like that other than at least now for clarity’s sake since Mr. Peter Lenkov was fired for causing a toxic work environment. Since they are connected, then there isn’t much reason to call it much else.

Why the Big Sky Controversy Matters

This might not have been publicized as much as it could be. Indeed, I wouldn’t know for sure about this unless I both watched the show and looked up its page on Wikipedia. This show despite being relatively new to TV has already created a controversy. How? And what is it? Well, let’s delve into this.

Big Sky is a show adapted from a series of books called The Highway which might have been a better name for the show. It is set in Montana and focuses on, at first, the kidnapping of three women or at least one woman and two teenage girls. The oldest of the victims on the show is a gender non-binary character played by a gender non-binary actor. But that’s not what the controversy is about.

In reality, Montana is known for having missing people. But the people who are missing are indigenous people. On the show, the kidnapped women are white. Therein lies the controversy. They are focusing on an important issue (kidnapping) while ignoring who it happens to a lot in the show.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_and_murdered_Indigenous_women

The show could change a lot over time and how closely it adapts the book series it is based off of it unknown. But I can’t blame just the book on the issues of this show for not representing what it should be in the end. Having seen a lot of the show thus far, they have given fleeting mentions to the fact that it is largely indigenous people that go missing in that area while focusing on the cast of the show that is yet another largely white cast. While the show could evolve over time and change to be more about it, it seems to have already lost its chance to focus on real world issues more.

Therein lies the problem. If you know of a famous missing person, chances are they are or were a white girl. The media has given extensive coverage to missing people with that criteria. The show even points out that these girls in the show (the missing white girls) are more likely to be noticed as missing and have people looking for them. The term for this is missing white woman syndrome.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_white_woman_syndrome

Now you’d have to image that missing people should be found regardless of what race they are. You’d think that one would want to find the missing white women in addition to all of the other races and the missing men as well. But that isn’t the issue. Plus, even when people who aren’t that are focused on in the media, the often focus on their problems instead of good things about them.

Not only is the media not doing favors to missing men or missing non-white women, they also aren’t doing favors to the missing white women by always making them out to be damsels in distress and in need of help from others. While every missing person needs help (and some are capable of taking care of themselves and getting out by themselves, if they ever get the upper hand somehow), we need to know that all of them are cared for and that we are all looking for them. We need to know that it is not just the white women that we care about and want to find.

Still, the show is doing its part by always promoting a phone number to call for helping missing people and others who might be in danger. The show still has room to grow and focus more on indigenous in the future. The show does need to address this and talk about this in some way beyond just the fleeting mentions that it has gotten thus far. And it needs to focus more on the other side of how white women are focused on too much in a way. The sooner it does it, the better. Then this controversy will mean more of a focus on unfortunate commentary on life than a show just focusing on the usual clichés that could happen to people throughout time, but not offering much help beyond that.

Back to School Commercials 2020

When it can time to do the count again this year, I was wondering if coronavirus would affect things potentially. It turns out that it really didn’t as the same number of commercials seemed to air at around the same time shortly after Independence Day (ironic, if you think about it). Well, here’s a count of this again as usual with a recap of other years that I’ve done this.

In 2014, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 1. The official count before August is 48. The official count before September is 158. The official total of the whole year is 170. In 2015, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 0. The official count before August is 44. The official count before September is 125. The official total of the whole year is 136.

In 2016, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 1. The official count before August is ~61. The official count before September is ~261. The official total of the whole year is 286. In 2017, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 0. The official count before August is ~68. The official count before September is 219. The official total of the whole year is 234.

In 2018, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 0. The official count before August is ~20. The official count before September is 110. The official total of the whole year is 115. In 2019, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 0. The official count before August is ~52. The official count before September is 159. The official total of the whole year is 165.

In 2020, the official count of back to school commercials before Independence Day is 0. The official count before August is 48. The official count before September is 162. The official total of the whole year is 188.

And that’s about it. If I ever get an official total on years that use an ~ mark that is higher than that, then I will get rid of them in the count over years as I’ve been wanting to since they first appeared since I do have a record of them anyways.

My Planned Midseason Viewing Habits: 2021

First off, I’m going to have to start this post off with an apology for not having done this sooner. I did mean to do this before the midseason schedule had started instead of at least two month into it. This is now one of the most notable midseasons in the history of midseason.

Now let’s get to some of what you already know. I wanted to see both Trickster and Call Me Cat at least once, but I will not be seeing them a second time. I can only hope that I’ll see more of Nurses, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, The Chase, Mr. Mayor (incorrectly called something else at least once), and The Hustler, even though work prevented this at times. The work schedule should be getting lighter for me soon and give me the chance to see Walker, something I have not yet been able to watch yet.

Also, since I forgot to mention it in the last reviews, even though it has sort of premiered by now, I will be planning to watch the FOX show of The Great North whenever it works out. I also plan to check out the new show Cherries Wild on FOX as well. As usual, I don’t know when certain shows might be on. Every other show that I mentioned in part 1 of the midseason reviews I plan to stick to.

With some new shows finally back, I’m once again watching more of The Rookie, Batwoman, Charmed, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Prodigal Son, and The Resident. More are set to return that I will watch again are The Flash and Black Lightning. While they have no return dates, I’m waiting to see more of Blood and Treasure, Evil, Burden of Truth, Stargirl, Dynasty, Legends of Tomorrow, the second half of The Outpost season, Supergirl, Lego Masters, The Masked Singer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Roswell, New Mexico. I’d have to imagine that a lot of them could become summer shows or not be seen until the fall, if they are seen at all like I’m wanting.

There are a lot of new shows that still have yet to premiere that I might as well keep track of. I want to see the new shows of Law and Order: Organized Crime, Debris, Diggstown, Fantasy Island, Game of Talents, Holmes Family Effect, Housebroken, Great Chocolate Showdown, Kung Fu, The Republic of Sarah, United States of Al, The Equalizer, Come Dance with Me, Clarice, and Generation Gap. I would not be surprised if any number of them never sees the light of day. I mean, they expected Generation Gap at least last season at some point.

I realize that I should keep track some of different changes like what I’m into now and not into anymore that I might not have told you about, at least in these viewing posts. One is that I stopped watching the show of American Housewife due to Anna-Kat being recast. While I never stated this before, I got back into Riverdale in advance of possible links between it and Katy Keene. I am now seeing that again since it is back on TV now this January. As for what I had watched during the fall, I did see a lot of Dancing with the Stars this season, largely due to a lack of other things on. Pretty much everything else that was new was already covered in reviews of new shows. I could go into which of them are still on that I still watch, but I won’t do that as I just want to get this post done. I am also seeing more of The Goldbergs and I’m into The Masked Singer now.

Thus, this post is largely over now except for a reminder that things can change both with the plan for what I do and what the schedule itself will be in the future as well. I may not watch stuff that I was going to at one point. I may watch plenty of things that I did not originally plan to watch. And a lot of what I see may not be things that I see a second time. I look forward to seeing things in the future.
