Show Airing Extension: An Annoying and Constant TV Habit

What do I mean by show airing extension? Well, a constant problem with TV shows when they randomly air at times is that they won’t air in their normal timeslot alone and air for longer than they normally do. This can cause problems for the typical fan of a show like this who doesn’t watch what normally airs after this show or typically watches other things instead.

I have no idea why this happens so much. If I had to guess, someone somewhere along the process thought that it made more sense to air these episodes together the way that they want it to be at that moment in time, despite the fact that they could split it into multiple parts like most multi part episodes typically are at other times. They could just not think of a logical way to split an episode so they don’t split it at all and just air it together. It happens a lot.

This is always annoying to be based on the fact that they don’t care what fans of this show typically do with the time after it when they typically watch other things or do other things. I don’t want to see the random two hour Survivor episode that happens twice a year or once a season because I know that it will cut into what I normally watch after Survivor is over. But I always do this and not just to do another blog of mine. I’ll admit that it can make sense why an episode like it does work better together than any other way. But I’m always thinking that they could just air the show a week later or earlier and they we wouldn’t have to deal with ignoring the other things I normally watch.

Why and how is this a constant habit? Well, it is almost certain to happen most of the time at some point in a season where a show is suddenly airing more than it normally is at once instead of just waiting for later to do this. Grey’s Anatomy is famous for its two hour episodes that happen from time to time, at least once every few seasons. Survivor does this a lot and doesn’t always promote it will enough for people to know that it was even going on until it has already started. It is often done with final episodes of shows or even some premieres of it. When shows are ending in a season, we see some of this going on to make up for strange airtimes or different episode orders. It’s not as annoying then as most of the shows that one cares about aren’t on anymore, at least this season.

Still, it is quite annoying to expect a usual thing from a TV schedule and have it go differently than we would want it to, even for just one day. People like to do things a certain way and they have certain shows that they like to watch at certain times. Plus, not everyone has the ability to watch more than one show at once or watch what they missed later online. It also doesn’t help that the sites that most of the networks use are prone to problems that you normally wouldn’t see most of the time.

There’s not much else to say. I’ve gotten used to this problem affecting me a lot and have gotten used to any issue that it can cause since I know it will be temporary this time as the networks deal with all sorts of changes that showrunners might want or that fans of whatever shows will just have to deal with in one way or another. Hope you know which one to choose.
