The Winter Olympics Hiatus

With the Olympics having started yesterday as of this blog post’s update, you may notice something that happens every four years when this is on. Or I should say, you don’t notice something. What’s weird is that this doesn’t seem to happen as much with the Summer Olympics. But in February in the US when this is on, most networks, or at least major networks, don’t air a lot of new shows.

Of course, NBC, which airs the Olympics, isn’t going to be airing new shows at all. But it does seem a bit weird to others that most other networks aren’t airing their usual shows. Some shows will be new. And they may not be the shows that aren’t in danger of ending that they don’t care about competing. Others are shows that typically only air against the Olympics, like Celebrity Big Brother.

Why do they do this? I’m not sure. This is just a thing that happens once every four years. It can be a bit difficult to remember that this does happen. I’m at least glad that this year, partly due to the continued weirdness with the pandemic, that some networks know better how and when to air new episodes. Some haven’t come back for just a few episodes just to go on another break again.

One may forget that this happens, but now you know. Be sure to check to see what shows are still new and airing still against the Olympics. I know that 9-1-1: Lone Star is. Legends of Tomorrow did this in 2018, but won’t be this year. March will be on the CW. I’ll have to check myself. Just know that a lot of new shows won’t be back on until after the games are over.
