Mondays on TV

I realize that I've been forgetting to post why I've ever seen any of these shows, so I will include that reason from now on. I probably won't get to Tuesdays and Thursdays until the next season. Hopefully, I will be able to get to them at some point. Also, expect cancelled shows from this season at some point in the near future.

Mondays is actually a pretty uninteresting night on television. NBC doesn't normally show that interesting shows although that has probably changed now that Smash is on the air. ABC airs Dancing with the Stars in the spring and fall, The Bachelor in the winter, and The Bachelorette during the summer. The Bachelor series was voted at www.tvseriesfinale.com at the number one popular series that should be cancelled. Castle ends the ABC schedule during the main year. CBS shows its main comedies and ends with a drama. CW shows otherwise uninteresting shows. FOX has been known for showing their most popular dramas at this time. Of the few shows I've seen this night, I will give you my rating for them.

 

How I Met Your Mother: Status- Currently on at 8/7 Central on CBS on Mondays. It is also in syndication on various networks. In addition to the current season, there will be at least one more season after this one. Why I've seen it- My brother watches the show and sometimes I did too. I slowly got into it as it progressed. Description- A man tells the story of how he met his wife and the adventures his friends and he had during this time. Notable People- Jason Segal, known for some movies like The Muppets, is Marshall. Neil Patrick Harris, known for his movies, hosting award shows, and Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog is Barney. Bob Saget, known mostly for his work on Full House, has an uncredited role of the narrator, but he is not the main character. Pros- It is an interesting show that has good plots and a recurring storyline. It has some better planning on what has happened and what will happen on the show, although it messes up sometimes like all shows. It is probably the most well thought out show. They constantly reference the past in case you didn't see it. Cons- The main point of this series has still not been answered. Some of the sexual references are weird. If you aren't into the show, it can be hard to stay into it as the show has a recurring storyline which is easy to miss. It can be too drawn out with its story arcs. Recommendation- Watch it if you like it. Prediction- It might find a natural end at the end of the seasons that are currently ordered. How long can it last? Grade: B-.

 

Bones: Status- Currently on at 8/7 Central on FOX on Mondays and in syndication. It has gotten renewed for another season which will make it FOX's longest running drama since House is ending. Why I've seen it- Randomly watched certain episodes. Description- A different type of drama, it investigates crimes where not much of the body remains. Pros- The chemistry between the two leads is interesting enough for the writers to give them a child on the show. The opposites seem to attract. Cons- The timeslot keeps changing, which makes it hard to catch. Recommendation- I haven't seen enough of it at the time, but it has my interest and I'll keep watching. Prediction- I see no reason why it will leave the airwaves anytime soon, but you'll never know what might happen. Some may say that it jumped the shark this season. Grade: Withdrawn from consideration at this point in time.

 

2 Broke Girls: Status- Currently on CBS at 8:30/7:30 Central on Mondays. New this season, it replaces last season's Mad Love. Why I've seen it- The opportunity to watch it once to see if it was any good and my devotion to the CBS network. Description- This show is about, well, two broke girls. Pros- This show won the People's Choice Award for best new comedy. Cons- The acting is crap. The characters are weak. The transition music is stupid. The show is otherwise pointless. Recommendation- There is no reason you should watch it. Prediction- It might last because most people who have seen this don't have my opinion of it. Grade: F.

 

Two and a Half Men: Status- It is currently on CBS at 9/8 Central on Mondays and syndication on various networks. Why I've seen it- Curious about what it was like. Noteworthiness- It killed off the former main character when the actor who portrayed him went crazy. It is currently the longest running comedy on CBS. Description- I honestly don't know what the point of the show is or the basic plot. Notable People- Ashton Kutcher, known for his movies and That 70's Show, is the main actor. Chuck Lorre, known for shows like Dharma and Greg as well as The Big Bang Theory, created the show. Pros- It is a popular comedy that can be funny at times. Even the change of main characters keeps the show in basically the same format and it might now be slightly better. Cons- There is too much sex and crap like that. The change of main characters brought no change to the show. Recommendation- It is kind of interesting and the old show that I liked is now gone. Prediction- Since this show is still the best in the demographic, this will stay on the air until people stop watching. Even if CBS passes on more episodes in the future, another network might give it a shot. Grade: C-.

 

House: Status- Currently on at 9/8 Central on FOX on Mondays. It is on its last season right now. Why I've seen it- Peer pressure, the fact that I hadn't seen it, and the need to find a medical drama to watch all the time. Description- A doctor named House uses any method to save his patients. Pros- The show is interesting to some people. Cons- The show is boring. Recommendation- It doesn't matter if you watch it anymore since it will be ending. I only ever watched it because there was nothing else good on at the time for the whole entire hour. Grade: C.

 

Mike & Molly: Status- Currently on CBS at 9:30/8:30 Central on Mondays. It was new last season. It replaced The New Adventures of Old Christine. It was once the most watched new comedy. Why I've seen it- Curious about the show, plus my devotion to CBS. Description- An overweight couple finds romance with each other. Notable People- Chuck Lorre, creator of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, is not the creator, but he is an executive producer and probably helps with a lot of the episodes. Pros- Finally a love story for fat people. The characters that you know are going to be together actually get together. A lot of it is Emmy material. Cons- The acting and writing could use some work. About half of it is complete crap. Arguably, the only reason it is on is because it is after Two and a Half Men. Recommendation- You can watch it if you want to. It's better than nothing. Prediction- I don't know how long it will last, but it could last a while. Grade: C-.

 

Castle: Status- Currently on ABC at 10/9 Central on Mondays. Why I've seen it- Recommended by my brother and not that great a devotion to any other show at the time. Noteworthiness- Two tie-in novels under a character's name that are referenced on the show have been published in real life. Because it is on right after Dancing with the Stars throughout 2/3 of the season, that helps the show's ratings. Description- A writer of novels assists the police in solving murders and other crimes in New York City. It is also about the love of the two main characters who work together and will stop at nothing to solve any case. Notable People- Nathan Fillion, known for his work on Firefly, and other shows, is the title character, Richard Castle. Pros- It is a semi-unique drama with good comedy and recurring storylines. If you like The Mentalist, you might like this show. Cons- It can take a while for some plots to be returned to in the storyline. Basic plots get repeated constantly. Recommendation- Watch this show. It is very good. Prediction- The network would be a fool to ever get rid of this show so let's hope that they are not foolish. I see it lasting for a good time and think that another network would love the show on its network if ABC is, in fact, foolish enough to cancel it. Grade: A.

 

Hawaii Five-O: Status- Currently on CBS at 10/9 Central on Mondays. It occupies the old CSI: Miami timeslot and replaced Cold Case. It was new last season. Why I've seen it- Devotion to the CBS network and curious about what the show is about. Noteworthiness- It is a remake of an old, popular show. It started out as the most watched new drama on television. It has already been sold into syndication, which is rare for a show this new. There have also been crossovers between it and NCIS: Los Angeles. Description- An elite crime fighting team works in Hawaii to solve cases. Notable People- Alex O'Loughlin, known for his work on Moonlight, Three Rivers, and some movies, is McGarrett. Daniel Dae Kim, known for his work on Lost and other shows, is a cast member as well. Pros- This show is actually filmed where it set. It is an interesting drama. The bickering between the two leads is entertaining. Cons- Some of the methods the characters use to catch the perps are unethical. It is a remake, and thus could just be considered trying to reclaim what it once was. Recommendation- Watch this if you don't watch Castle or record it for later. Prediction- It will last awhile. Grade: B.

 

Smash: Status- Currently on NBC at 10/9 Central on Mondays. It has been renewed for another season. Why I've seen it- It sounded interesting and the critics love it. Noteworthiness- It is a musical drama, one of currently only two. Description- It is the behind the scenes look at the making of a Broadway play. Pros- This is a good idea and an alternative to Glee, if you need one. It has good ratings. The songs are actually original. Cons- It is a rip-off of High School Musical (the movie), like Glee is. The morals are bad. Recommendation- I think that it is good enough to watch, but not important enough to watch all the time. Prediction- It's a hit and should stay around. Grade: B-.

 

Friday Shows

Finally, I can post something new. I realize that I forgot to post the reason that I ever watched any of these shows in the first place, so they will be included from now on. I hope that I will be able to update the rest of the days of the week in the future.

Fridays are the least competitive nights on television although there are some good shows out there. Viewers aren’t regular, but those that are and even those that aren’t, give the show these ratings. It only seems like CBS and the CW care about good programming on this night although it doesn’t always catch on. ABC handles the night best with stand alone episodes of reality shows. The CW shows Supernatural and Nikita. CBS is showing Blue Bloods, Undercover Boss, and CSI: New York. ABC shows 20/20, Primetime: What Would You Do?, and Shark Tank. NBC shows Dateline and Grimm. FOX shows Fringe. FOX hates its 8 pm time slot on Fridays, but there tends to be good shows on at this time sometimes. I will now tell you about what I’ve seen that isn’t cancelled. Beware that most of the shows come here to die and they are only here right now to enjoy them before they are gone.

Undercover Boss: Status- Currently on CBS at 7 Central on Fridays. It was a midseason replacement this year despite airing two previous seasons. It replaced A Gifted Man in a way. It has been renewed for another season. Why I’ve seen it- It looked interesting. Noteworthiness- Cameras are used by explaining that the person in the show is competing with someone else or to see if they would be chosen for the job. Nobody is seen on camera in more than one episode, except for maybe the pretend competitor. Description- Head people of different companies, some well known companies and some not as much, go undercover in their own companies at entry level positions. Pros- CEOs are shown to be actual human beings. The everyman is helped. The incompetence of the bosses in entry level positions is quite humorous. Cons- Editing could be better as some minor things that are referenced later on are not explained. If you’ve seen one episode, you’ve seen them all. It could be said that the bosses are only on the show to promote their own business. Recommendation- Watch it if you have a chance. I think that it is very good. Prediction- It will last a long time. Grade: A.

Shark Tank: Status- Currently on ABC at 7 Central on Fridays. Why I’ve seen it- Flipping channels, stayed here because it seemed interesting. Description- A reality show where a group of rich sharks, as they’re called, decide whether or not to buy into a business of young business person. Pros- The segments are short and the decisions are interesting. It can be very intense. These are actually proceedings among people which makes it more real. Cons- You may not like their decisions. It is hard to find a rerun. You might not watch unless you’re a regular viewer. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it and you might but whether you should watch or not is up to you. Prediction- It will stay on as it gets good ratings on Fridays. Grade: C.

Nikita: Status- Currently on the CW at 8 Eastern/7 Central on Fridays. Why I’ve seen it- Looked interesting. Noteworthiness- It is the remake of another old series. Remakes are popular on this network as well as shows based on pre-existing things. In fact, it is hard to find a completely original series on this network. Description- A former female spy seeks to stop the place that trained her. Pros- A good drama that keeps you interested in the storyline. Cons- I don’t see it lasting that long. It can be very confusing and if you miss episodes, you’ll be lost to the storyline. Recommendation- Watch it if you can. Prediction- It is more than likely going to get cancelled with its low ratings. Grade: B+.

CSI: New York: Status- Currently on CBS at 8 Central on Fridays. It is the third addition to the CSI franchise. It almost got cancelled last season. Why I’ve seen it- Regularly watched CSI: Miami and decided to watch this as well. Description- A team of Crime Scene Investigators in New York City helps solve crimes. Pros- It is a different CSI if you don’t like the other two. The cast from this show has changed the least. Cons- Like the other two, women aren’t represented well in it. The plots can be dark. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Prediction- If it does get cancelled, another network could be interested since they are in need of their own ratings hits which it would be if it weren’t on CBS. With two other CSIs on CBS, it’s likely that they’d keep at least one of them. The Friday night time slot isn’t helping them. It doesn’t have a full season which is normally a death sentence for a show on this network. Also, with its low ratings it’s unlikely to last much longer. Grade: C.

Grimm: Status- Currently on NBC at 8 Central on Fridays. I think that there will be another season of the show because it got renewed. Why I’ve seen it- Promise to watch a new NBC show this season. Description- A police officer discovers that he is a “Grimm,” a person who can see fairy tale people in real life. It is more of a police drama with a twist than a fairy tale drama. Pros- Since it is on Fridays, it doesn’t matter that it has worse than usual ratings. It is pretty interesting. Cons- It airs at a bad time. The fairy tale angle is unoriginal. Recommendation- I haven’t seen enough to give you a good rating, but I like it and watch it when I can. Prediction- Toss-up, but it will have at least one more season, I think. Grade: B.

Primetime: What Would You Do?: Status- Currently on ABC at 8 Central on Fridays. It is a spin-off of 20/20. ABC news helps with this show. Why I’ve seen it- Commercials made it seem interesting. Cancellation of The Good Guys helped me decide to watch it. Noteworthiness- It is the first hidden camera show I’ve seen that wasn’t out to exploit people for laughs. It is actually very serious. Description- Different situations are set up to see how people react to them. The point is to get people to react to a situation and get them to help people out. Very serious situations are acted out using issues such as coming out, unwanted pregnancy, racial issues, gender issues, and more. Pros- It shows the good side among people and how they actually help sometimes. It is very interesting and could make good teaching material. There are different segments in each episode to keep you interested. It probably is a more realistic version than any scripted show could come up with. Cons- Some segments are better than others. A certain amount of deception is involved with the people. All the shooting locations tend to be in New England. One can question the legalities of this show. Recommendation- Everyone should watch this show. This is the best show currently on television. Prediction- It should be on until they run out of ideas, which is unlikely that they will. Whether it will stay around is for the viewers to decide. I think that it will last a while. Grade: A++.

Blue Bloods: Status- This is currently on CBS at 9 Central on Fridays. It was new last season, replacing Miami Medical. Why I’ve seen it- It is on CBS. Nothing else good was on. Description- This is a cop show where the cops are related. It is set in New York City. Notable People- Pretty much everyone who works on the show is famous in some way. Tom Selleck is present, but is not the main character. Pros- Something good exists on Friday nights for you to watch. A partial family aspect is added to the show. Cons- The ways the officers catch and interrogate some of the suspects/criminals is unethical sometimes. It can be like a lot of other dramas. Some episodes are better than others. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it. You might too. It makes you think sometimes. Prediction- It is renewed for another season and will hopefully stay for much more. Grade: B-.

20/20: Status- This is currently on ABC at 9 Central on Fridays. It is the longest running primetime news show on ABC. Why I’ve seen it- It looks interesting, depending on the news story. Description- This is an in-depth news show regarding issues relating to current events or just anything like a murder mystery. Pros- Can be quite interesting if you don’t watch anything else at that time. Cons- There’s a show like this on every network. Virtually no re-runs exist. Some episodes are better than others. Recommendation- I like it, but don’t watch it unless I know that I want to. Maybe you’ll like it or consider it a complete waste of time. Prediction- It will last forever. Grade: A.

Dateline: Status- This is currently on NBC at 9 Central on Fridays. It is the longest running primetime news show on NBC and sometimes airs twice in one week. Why I’ve seen it- Nothing else on and it seemed interesting. Description- Pretty much an NBC version of 20/20. I don’t know which came out first. Pros- It can be interesting. Cons- It can only be interesting if you like it. I haven’t seen enough of it to find out how different it is from other networks versions of this show. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Prediction- It will last forever. Grade: A.

Wednesdays on TV

Due to the frequent scheduling changes that will take place the rest of the season, this might be the last day I can post about until the next season starts so I can include updates on new shows in the midseason. I'll begin by posting an update to the Sliver Globe Awards by listing what shows are in the running for being the best on television based on winners in other categories. I will list the winner in my next post.

And now, here's Wednesdays on TV:

Wednesdays can be a bit of a bore on television. There are some interesting shows but most of it is not worth your time. Yet it also has some of the best shows. ABC shows its comedies which are currently Modern Family, Happy Endings, Suburbatory, and The Middle. FOX shows the popular American Idol. NBC shows Law and Order: SVU. The CW shows America’s Next Top Model. CBS shows Criminal Minds, CSI, and Survivor. I haven’t seen much of them that aren’t listed here, but I’ll tell you about what I have seen. There are no winners or losers, merely competitors.

The Middle: Status- Currently on ABC at 7 Central on Wednesdays. Noteworthiness- It is tied with Cougar Town and Modern Family as longest running ABC comedy. Description- The comedy adventures of an ordinary family in Indiana. Notable People- Patricia Heaton, who was Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond, is the mother. Neil Flynn, from Scrubs, is the father of the show. Pros- Mothers would like this show. It is quite funny from time to time. The youngest kid’s quirkiness is humorous. Cons- Some inappropriate stuff comes up sometimes. Recommendation- I say that you should watch this show if you can. You’ll especially like it if you don’t like Survivor. Prediction- It will last a long time. Grade: B+.

Survivor: Status- Currently on CBS at 7 Central on Wednesdays. It was on Thursday for a long time until it switched with the comedy blocks. It might have changed because March Madness would move it to this slot for that time and the network decided not to bother changing it for that time. Noteworthiness- It shows two seasons a year; one in the fall and another in the spring. The current season they are on is their 24^nd. There has been something new that happens on this show that has never happened in previous seasons. While most reality shows don’t have as good ratings as scripted shows, this has good ratings that show scripted shows could envy. It is also the adaptation of the Swedish reality show, Expedition Robertson. It is considered the first reality show and is the longest running one on CBS if you don’t count a new related show. Description- Contestants compete against each other to see who will survive 39 days and win a million dollars. Every week, a contestant is voted out and the last few people face a jury of previously voted out people who vote one of them the winner. Notable People- Jeff Probst is the host. Mark Burnett is the creator of this show. Pros- There is a different cast each season so if you don’t like one season you can stop watching and watch the next season. The contestants are interesting sometimes. Drama is always pleasant. Due to the competition nature of the show, it can’t legally be scripted like a lot of reality shows are. Cons- The people that you hate can make it far while the people that you like get eliminated first. The basic plots of some seasons can be similar to each other. They like to recycle ideas and challenges. It can be hard to find a normal season anymore. A lot of controversies have arisen on the show. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it and think that you should watch it, but not everyone has my opinion of this show. Prediction- It will last as long as it has the same host. If it changes, it might leave the airwaves shortly after although another network like the CW might still have faith in it. Grade: A-.

American Idol: Status- A never ending show that appears at all different times during the spring season but mostly on Wednesdays at 7 Central. Noteworthiness- It is very popular with some people being the most watch show currently on television. It was also voted by people at www.tvseriesfinale.com the runner-up of what long running show should be cancelled. It does better than every scripted show on FOX with almost double the viewers as their top rated show. In fact, most shows up against its time slot are considered to be on a graveyard slot. The judges are famous, no matter who they are. Far enough in the game, you can vote as many times as you like for who you want to win. Description- A reality competition where we vote for our favorite singer. Pros- We get to choose the outcomes at some point. The bad people early on can be funny for us. Inside jokes are present a lot. Cons- The voting system, where you can vote as often as you like for whoever you want, is seriously flawed. Most contestants are never heard from again even after winning the show. We are always going to dislike some of the judges’ and voters’ decisions on who should win. Recommendation- I don’t like it. Watch it at your own risk. I want it to be cancelled and consider it the worst thing on television right now that I’ve seen. Prediction- It will last forever. Grade: F.

Suburbatory: Status- Currently on ABC at 7:30 Central on Wednesdays. Description- I don’t know what it is about except life in the suburbs after living in the city and culture shock involved with that. Notable People- Alan Tudyk from Firefly is on the show. Pros- Critics like it. It isn’t bad. Cons- I don’t get what it is about. I don’t understand it. Recommendation- I have none available right now. I don’t regularly watch this so I don’t have full knowledge of the show. Prediction- Toss-up. Grade: none right now, but maybe one later.

Modern Family: Status- Currently on ABC at 8 Central on Wednesdays. Noteworthiness- Like The Office, it is a fake documentary meaning it presents itself as a reality show, when it isn’t (Although certain “reality” shows are that way). It has inspired ABC to look for families like the ones on the show to do a real reality show on. Whether anything will come of that is another question. It is a popular show winning awards as is the longest running comedy on this network, tied with The Middle and Cougar Town. Description- A look at the people an extended family of “normal” ones and not so normal ones. Notable People- Ed O’Neal from Married with Children is present. Other people might be famous either before or after the show aired. Pros- A funny comedy that attracts all different people like the families that are like this. There are good episodes a lot of the time. Cons- The episodes do not always have enough material in them and move by too quickly. Inappropriate material shows up often. Recommendation- Watch this show if you like it. Prediction- Since it is the most successful comedy on ABC, it will last a long time. Grade: A.

Law and Order: Special Victims Units: Status- Currently on NBC at 8 Central on Wednesdays. Noteworthiness: It is the longest running drama spin-off on television as well as the longest running NBC drama (I think). It is a spin-off of Law and Order. Description- A group of people known as the special victims unit (SVU) investigate sexual crimes. Pros- They never show the crimes. The plots are interesting and different. They use real life cases as an inspiration, but not as what actually is shown. Cons- If you haven’t started watching yet and you do start watching, you may think that you are stupid for not watching it sooner. The show may never end. Recommendation- Give it a chance and you might like it. Prediction- It will last until people stop watching for some odd reason. Grade: A+.

Happy Endings: Status- Currently on ABC at 8:30 Central on Wednesdays. Description- I know what the original focus of the show was about, but I do not know what it is about now. People compare it to Friends which is the best way of saying what it is now. Notable People- Casey Wilson from Saturday Night Live is a cast member. So is Damon Wayans Jr. Pros- Unlike most second halves of a comedy slot, this is something I don’t mind watching. It can be quite entertaining. Cons- It is hard to tell what the show is about. It can be pretty weird. Recommendation- You might as well watch it unless something better is on. Prediction- I don’t know what will happen to the show, but I only hope that it will stay around. Grade: B+.

CSI: Status- Currently on CBS at 9 Central on Wednesdays. Noteworthiness- This was once the most watched drama on television until it was replaced by NCIS. Its pilot was passed by three different networks, ABC, NBC, and FOX, before it was picked up by CBS. It is also the longest running drama on CBS. Description- A team of people solves cases using Crime Scene Investigation. Notable People- Ted Danson is the main character, although he didn’t used to be. Pros- A good crime drama which goes more in-depth into how they solve crimes and catch the person who committed them. Cons- As it goes farther into its tenure on television, it is more likely to get cancelled and could leave the airwaves on at least CBS for good soon enough. Not enough women are represented. A lot of other shows are just like it. Probably isn’t realistic. It has lost its main character, not once but twice. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Prediction- Its end will come, I just don’t know when. Grade: C.

Primetime on Sundays

I still don't know if anyone is even reading this blog or not, but it doesn't matter much anyways. I will still post my reviews of shows and it is time I started with the shows on Sunday nights on television. What's notable about Sunday nights is that's when most award shows are shown.

Each network has a different style of shows on Sundays. Sunday is the only time you’ll see primetime from 6-7 Central. Except ABC, all of the major four networks show football for the first half of the season. This causes problems on CBS where most of the shows get delayed which is really annoying. FOX just preempts the first hour as needed which causes very rare delays sometimes. NBC doesn’t even show non-sports until midseason. In terms of consistency, this day of the week has the most, except for Friday. The CW doesn’t show any primetime shows on Sundays anymore. ABC and CBS show mostly the same thing in theory. In fact, it’s creepy how similar they are. FOX shows animation domination, all of them half hour shows that are animated that you shouldn’t let your kids watch. When NBC show shows after football season ends, it is normally just lame reality shows and a second edition of Dateline. Here’s my view of the shows that I have seen, some of them, watch regularly.

Bob’s Burgers: Status- Currently on Sundays on FOX at 7/6 Central. It was a midseason replacement both this and last season when it premiered. Description- Part of animation domination, we see the misadventures of a family who works in, owns, and (more or less) lives in a restaurant. Pros- It is funny, using a humor not typically seen on television. Cons- There may be worse things than this, but there are a lot of better things as well. It can be hard to stay into it and watch it all the time. It may take you a while to realize that it is good. Recommendation- It is pretty good. Prediction- I don’t know if it will last or it and could have only limited a limited number of episodes per season as sports might always delay it until midseason. That was what killed King of the Hill. Grade: B+.

60 Minutes: Status- Currently on Sunday nights on CBS at 7/6 Central. Some consider it to be the longest show in primetime. Description- It is an in-depth news show of current and interesting events. Could be like the PBS news hour with commercials. Normally three stories are shown with the first relating to current events and the last relating to culture. The stories are longer now that Andy Rooney has died. Pros- Unique news stories that could keep you hooked until commercials. Cons- Nothing keeps you into it if you want to watch something else and the segment you were watching ends. Controversies have arisen more from this show than any other show on CBS. The segments tend to last a very long time which can irate you. Recommendation- You should watch this if you have the chance. Maybe you’ll learn something interesting. Prediction- This show will be on until the end of the world. Even then, it might continue. Grade: A-.

America’s Funniest Home Videos: Status- Currently on ABC on Sundays at 7/6 Central and in syndication on various networks. Noteworthiness- It has been on a long time. Description- Viewer submitted home videos are viewed as the audience determines which one is the best. It is shown in Los Angeles. I used to watch it all the time with its original host, Bob Saget. Notable People- Tom Bergeron, who also hosts Dancing with the Stars, hosts this show. Pros- If you like the Three Stooges, you’ll like this show. It can be funny sometimes. Cons- Most of the laughs comes from people getting hurt. It can get boring quickly. Some of what is shown is far from being funny. Recommendation- Do not watch this show. It is not worth your time. Prediction- This show will be on until people stop watching it, submitting videos to it, or the network finally realizes how bad it really is. Grade: D-.

The Cleveland Show: Status- Currently on FOX at 6:30 Central Time. Description- A character from Family Guy (Cleveland Brown) moves to another town and his adventures are viewed here. Notable People: Seth MacFarlane, most well known for Family Guy, the show it span-off from, created this show and voices some characters. Pros- It keeps some of Family Guy’s format with a different set of characters. Cons- It can be uninteresting, inappropriate, and otherwise unentertaining. They use Family Guy cameos as a marketing gimmick. Recommendation- You can watch it if you want and like it, but I’d pass. Prediction- It will last for a while as Family Guy lives in it. Grade: C-.

The Simpsons: Status- Currently on FOX on Sundays at 8/7 Central and in syndication on various networks. Noteworthiness- It has lasted more seasons than any other primetime show that isn’t a news show. The original cast is still working on the show. There tends to be a famous voice in most episodes. It was originally a spin-off of The Tracy Ullman Show. Over 500 episodes have been made. FOX considered creating a channel just for reruns of the show. Description- This is an animated comedy on a strange family in Springfield. They have different, unrelated stories in each episode. Notable People- Anyone in the main cast because they are in the cast. Matt Groening, the creator who had done different comic book series as well as Futurama. Pros- Funny episodes are shown all the time. There is never any ongoing storylines so you don’t have to be devoted to the show. Despite the fact that it has been on a long time, they still manage to come up with great, new episodes and might be better than when the show originally started. Cons- Inappropriate humor is used a lot. Because of its length on the air, the head writer changes every so often. There is absolutely no continuity between episodes. Recommendation- You should watch it if you like it (and only if you like it) and have the time. It can be quite entertaining. Prediction- This show will last forever, unless the death of a cast member causes a retooling of the show or otherwise abrupt ending. One can wonder what the death of Matt Groening, who still supervises the show, would cause. Grade: B-.

The Amazing Race: Status- Currently on CBS at 8/7 Central on Sundays.  Description- Teams of two different people race around the world to hopefully win a million dollars. It is a reality show. Pros- There is a different group of people each season, in case you don’t like one. It has some interesting moments and is hard to get out of once you start watching on episode. The critics love it and give it awards. Cons- If you don’t get into it soon enough, it won’t interest you. The problems that happen to the contestants that lead to a commercial break tend to be solved when it returns before a minute has past. It can be hard to stay into the whole season sometimes. Every episode follows the same basic premise and can get predictable. It isn’t as interesting as other shows are. It can be a bore sometimes with the redundancy of what always happens in every episode. There have been times where they hired contestants who have already worked on other reality shows. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Like most reality shows, you may not like it, you may loathe it like every reality show, or you can’t live without it. Prediction- As long as it has fans, people will watch it. It could lose fans over time and cancellation wouldn’t be far away. The only way cancellation is certain is if contestants stop applying for the show because no one is interested or the current host leaves and gets replaced by an otherwise inept host. Grade: C+

Once Upon a Time: Status- Currently on ABC at 8/7 Central on Sundays. Description- The world of fairy tales are trapped in our world (a world of “pure horror”). Notable People- The creators of Lost also created this show. Pros- A captivating drama, it keeps you interested with the writers’ take on fairy tales. It is hard to stop watching. Cons- One can wonder if they’ll have enough material for a long series. One could wonder instead if the show moves fast enough. Due to the frequent use of flashbacks, one could wonder also if they can keep their stories straight and avoid continuity errors. Recommendation- It is a good show, if you don’t mind the other shows at the same time. You should watch it sometime. Prediction- This new show is a hit and the network needs more of those so it will stay around for quite some time. Grade: A.

Family Guy: Status- Currently on FOX at 9/8 Central and in syndication on various local affiliates. Noteworthiness- To my knowledge, it is the only show in television history that has been cancelled twice yet still manages to produce new episodes. Description- The animated adventures of a family including their dog and baby who can talk and behave like normal people. Notable People- Seth MacFarlane created the show as well as voices several characters. Seth Green, known for his work on Robot Chicken and some movies is Chris. Mila Kunis, who was in That 70’s Show and some notable movies like Black Swan, is Meg. Pros- The show manages to stay fresh while poking fun at somewhat recent events. Insides jokes come up all the time. Funny episodes are common. The themes that show up are less an approval of them but more a comment on them and how other people can sometimes think. Cons- Bad episodes pop up just as often as good ones. If it weren’t animated, it couldn’t be shown on network television due to sex, violence, and language. It can be too random at points leaving you with no clue as to what is going on. You’ll probably hate as much as you like. At least two episodes were controversial enough to not be aired. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. It’s not for everyone, although I like it sometimes. Prediction- It will last a long time because the people who hate it are a minority and could always bring it back another time by buying all the seasons on DVD for themselves. Grade: C.

The Good Wife: Status- It is currently on CBS on Sundays at 9/8 Central. Noteworthiness- The season, it was the only nominee for drama categories that was not on cable. Description- It originally started with an arrest of a public office holder in Chicago and revealed that he had an affair on his wife. He was found to be framed. The show, however, is about his wife and her journeys as a lawyer as well as other cast members. It is set in Chicago. Notable People- Juliana Margulies, from ER and other shows, is the lead character Alicia. Others might be present. Pros- It is an interesting show with a recurring storyline. It stays as best as possible with Democrats by neither downplaying them nor making them the best. It is a good courtroom drama. The editing is great. Cons- You’ll be confused watching it without knowing the recurring storyline. It can be very confusing with its plots. A whole episode can go by without you understanding what happened in the episode. Christianity has a weird representation which is seemingly from the views of non-Christians. It is very subtle and hard to catch some things in the show. If it weren’t set in Chicago, the courtroom aspect would be even more unrealistic than it already is. Recommendation- Watch this if you have a chance too. Prediction- It will be on for a while if CBS knows what’s good for them. The CBS website lists it as a popular show. Also, I don’t think cancellation by the network will be the end of it as other networks might be interested. Grade: B-.

American Dad: Status- Currently on FOX at 9:30/8:30 pm Central. Description- A CIA agent’s adventures including a talking fish and an alien with different identities he creates. Notable People- Seth MacFarlane, most well-known for Family Guy, created the show as well as doing some of the voices. Pros- Weird storylines keep this show fresh. Cons- Like every other show on FOX, it has a lot of smut that is bad for moral people. It’s not as good as some other shows. Recommendation- I don’t like this show, but you can watch it if nothing else good is on or so you don’t have to watch just the second half of a TV show. Prediction- I have no idea what will happen, but the ratings are good and that almost always ensures that a show stays on the air. Grade: D+.

CSI: Miami: Status- Currently on CBS at 10/9 Central. Noteworthiness- It is part of the CSI franchise, the second one to air. In a vote at www.tvseriesfinale.com, it was in the top six popular shows that should be cancelled. Some fans consider this the worst CSI. It was originally created to be the first “rip-off” of the successful CSI. Description- A team of CSIs investigates murders and other crimes in Miami. It is part of a television franchise. Pros- An interesting crime show for those that like typical crime shows. Cons- People have said that it doesn’t represent how CSI really works. Some episodes are weird and leave you wondering why they were made at all in the end. Not enough females are represented in the cast. Recommendation- Watch it while you can as it is likely to get cancelled very soon. There are two other CSI shows on television that you might like more. Prediction- It might get cancelled but I’m not sure if it will. It is very popular in other countries. If it does get cancelled, another network might be interested in it unless it has already run its course. More than once, it has been preempted and the original show they were going to air is delayed a week, thus delaying all new episodes. It used to be on when Hawaii Five-O is now on and the new timeslot doesn’t help it. It occupies a time slot that shows tend to be cancelled in. This season, it doesn’t even have a full season order which is normally a death sentence for a show on CBS. Grade: C.

Sliver Globe Awards: 2011

You might have heard of the Golden Globes and how they award the best in television and film. Since that has come and gone, I have decided to start the Sliver Globe Awards for the best of shows that aired in 2011. Since I am not keeping up with movies, there will be no movie component to these awards. I figure that only TV shows get the award and most of these I've made up myself. The winners will be announced later, provided that they do not automatically win by being the only nominnee. I would also like to criticize some award shows for using presenters for uncoming projects as a way to promote them and for giving awards to movies that are still in theatres. New shows

Sorry this took so long to get updated. As promised, my first impressions of new shows as well as my long delayed opinions of cancelled shows from last season.

Once Upon a Time First Impressions: Show Description- The world of fairy tales combine with our world (a world of “pure horror”). Behind the Scenes- The creators of Lost are behind this show if you even care about them. It premiered as one of the latest shows of the fall season, a bit later than it normally should have. If it fails, November Sweeps (whatever that is) will instantly remove it from the schedule. My Thoughts- It is a very good show. My only concern is how they will come up with enough material for multiple seasons or if it will last a short time which would be preferable to jumping the shark. I give it four out of five stars. Where to Find- Sundays at 7 Central on ABC

Terra Nova First Impressions: Show Description- A dying world in the future goes into an alternate past filled with dinosaurs to save the world. Not only do they have to deal with dinosaurs that could easily kill them, but also an evil group of people that came back with them. Behind the Scenes- FOX has a lot of faith in this show and I’ll tell you how. The budget for an entire episode is four million dollars. Most shows don’t get that much money during an entire season. If they aren’t careful, this show could have the potential to bankrupt the network. Here’s another interesting side note. They did not order a pilot but thirteen episodes, a very rare move. Let’s hope that it pays off. My Thoughts- The show looks good enough. It may come off as an adult version of a Saturday morning cartoon, but a lot of good shows are like that. In fact, some of the best shows are like that. So time will tell how good this show will be. I like it. Four stars out of five. Where to Find- Mondays at 7 Central on FOX

2 Broke Girls First Impressions: Show Description- The show is about, well, two broke girls. One was always broke and the other just recently became broke. Behind the Scenes- It replaces the show Mad Love. It was one of two shows to replace it, the other is already cancelled. My Thoughts- When I first heard of this show, I thought that it looked like complete crap. Now that I have seen it, I have changed my mind. I now know that it is complete crap. The acting is bad, writing is awkward, and has the worst music for transitions from one scene to another. I fail to understand what the point of it is, if there even is one. I give it the most useless show award, strangest idea award, and worst reason to cancel a good show award. One star. Where to Find- CBS

The New Girl First Impressions: Show Description- After breaking up with her live-in cheating boyfriend, Jess moves into a new place with three guys. Also in the cast is Jess’s best friend. Behind the Scenes- A cast member had to be replaced after the pilot because he has a contract with another show called Happy Endings (a good show). He thought that it would be cancelled, but it wasn’t. Another interesting note is that it has gotten a full season order thanks to great ratings (read Glee lead-in). Also, having Zooey Deschanel (who just might be the sister of Emily Deschanel from Bones which might also explain the show’s success) as the main star doesn’t hurt. It seems almost surprising that a live action sitcom could work on FOX and makes a great pair with Raising Hope. My Thoughts- The show is nice. I give it three stars out of five. Where to Find- Tuesdays at 8 Central on FOX

Ringer First Impressions: Show Description- Strange circumstances force a woman to assume the identity of her identical twin. This is a show where everyone has their secrets. Behind the Scenes- Sarah Michelle Geller, whoever that is, is in the show and you never hear the end of that. It’s a pretty big deal for some odd reason. It also was considered by CBS but the CW showed it instead when CBS passed on it for other shows. My Thoughts- Boy, it sure seemed to follow every stereotype in the book. It is somehow both over and under dramatic. I’m not very thrilled with the show. Two out of five stars.  Where to Find- Tuesdays at 9 Eastern on the CW

Unforgettable First Impressions: Show Description- A woman cop has a memory where she cannot forget anything. Although it sounds like it is based on the pure imagination of a writer, there are people with this ability. It is NOT about a California Girl (or Gurl for that matter). Behind the Scenes- It occupies the old Good Wife timeslot and the network is already calling it the most watched new show. I guess you could say that this show is unforgettable. (You’ll be hearing that joke a lot, so get used to it.) Since CBS likes to keep the same actors in their family, it isn’t a surprise that Poppy Montgomery, who used to star on Without a Trace, is the lead actress in this show. My Thoughts- I do think that the show is good even if it is a bit boring when compared to the other dramas. I give it three out of five stars. Where to Find- Tuesdays at 9 Central on CBS

How to be a Gentleman First Impressions: Show Description- Another lame sitcom overloaded with sex and bad morals. They cancelled Mad Love for this? Behind the Scenes- CBS picked up the pilot for this and Two Broke Girls making an odd number of comedies for the network which moved Rules of Engagement to Saturdays. I don’t know why they thought it was so great. My Thoughts- A combination of bad acting and bad storylines makes this show a big waste of time. I’ll never watch it again and I only saw it once. It gets a point for trying and not being sexist like all the other “manly” show. One out of five stars. It is a waste of time. Where to Find- An update to this story is it probably will be cancelled very soon because the viewership is horrible. All it really succeeded in doing was bringing Rules of Engagement back to the timeslot it used to occupy. This currently gets the “what were they thinking?” award, worst idea for a show award, worst cast award, and worst new show award. Trust me; you did not miss anything if you never saw it.

Person of Interest First Impressions: Show Description- Two men work outside the law to stop crimes before they happen. One is the smarts behind the operation who created the machine that makes this possible. The other is very skilled physically. Behind the Scenes- This is one of the most well-received show in test screenings. It replaces Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. My Thoughts- Very good show, in my opinion. It lives up to the hype. Four out of five stars. Where to Find- Thursdays at 8 Central on CBS

The Secret Circle First Impressions: Show Description- A group of teenage witches develop their powers in a small town. It is based off of a book series by L. J. Smith, the same writer of the Vampire Diaries book series. I also admire the show for having a main group of six witches instead of five or three. Behind the Scenes- Having this show and The Vampire Diaries back to back is supposed to boost the ratings of the latter show since The Vampire Diaries is the CW’s most popular series and serves as the lead-in. Whether that will pay off or not is another thing. My Thoughts- The timeslot is very competitive as it is a Thursday show, a day of the week where every network wins but individual shows do fail sometimes. But as to whether this can succeed or not is another idea. I am a step away from giving up on it and watching something else at that time. The show looks like an attempt at the network to recreate something else. The plot moves too slowly and it can be uninteresting. It gets a point for trying to be different, but ultimately fails at even that. But, who knows what can change in the coming episodes. Two stars out of five. Where to Find- Thursdays at 9 Eastern on the CW

A Gifted Man First Impressions: Show Description- A great medical doctor sees his dead ex-wife and saves his life. Behind the Scenes- A CBS medical drama (1) with supernatural twists (2) that is on Friday nights (3) could spell triple death for this show. Wish it the best of luck. (If you are in a Nielson family, please consider watching it at least once.) It replaces the short lived CHAOS. My Thoughts- The dead ex-wife angle is a bit unnecessary and I hope that they get rid of it as soon as possible. As for the show, it is very interesting and could be the type of show that CBS could use. I give it four stars out of five. Where to Find- Fridays at 7 Central on CBS

Grimm First Impressions: Show Description- A police officer discovers that he is a “Grimm,” a person who can see fairy tale people in real life. More of a police drama with a twist than a fairy tale drama. Behind the Scenes- This comes out around the same time ABC’s Once Upon a Time. It is on Fridays and that is normally a death slot. Wish it luck. My Thoughts- It just might be the best new show on NBC (although I haven’t seen any other new shows on NBC). It is a good blend of reality and fantasy. Four out of five stars. Where to Find- Fridays at 8 Central on NBC

And now, the best of last season that's no longer around.

Alas, not every good show is popular with different people. On this list I have are cancelled shows from this season that I thought that I should mention. I have seen enough of them to make the list worthwhile. The first interesting thing to note is that all of these shows listed were only on their first season. That means that shows follow the opposite of the real world where the newer thing doesn’t do well and the old thing tends to stay where it is. The second interesting thing is that most of these shows had famous people on them meaning not only that famous people don’t make a show but that some bad shows could just have famous people to try to draw people in. So here’s a list:

The Whole Truth: Description- See both sides of a court case where you find out who really did what and why. Notable People- The main stars are famous. Pros- Finally, you get to see both the defense and prosecution represented. It makes you think. Cons- The verdict is very one-sided. Cancellation Reasons- No one seems to take this time slot seriously and it was up against legal dramas on the other main networks. ABC has cancelled two shows at this time in just the last previous season. It was affected by what I refer to as the actor change curse where a major actor is on the pilot and not on the main show. There is only one show I know of where that event happened and the show lasted for another season. It might have started out great, but failed in later episodes. Critics hated it. Some episodes remain unaired and it is unlikely to be released to DVD. It is dead and nothing can save it now. Similar Show: Blue Bloods. Grade: C+. If released, consider it.

The Good Guys: Description- Two cops with different ways of solving crimes work together. Set and filmed in Dallas. Notable People- Tom Hank’s son Colin was in the show. Pros- It is funny and interesting to see how their normally small cases turn into something very big. Cons- Although each episode is different, the basic plot is predictable. Cancellation Reasons- The airings were sporadic with most people not knowing when it was on even if it were on. It eventually found its way to 8 on Fridays and FOX hates that time slot. The fans were few. Also, it was on Friday nights which probably killed it. I don’t know if it will come out on DVD or not, but I hope that it does so I can get it. All the episodes aired. It is dead and ain’t coming back. It was my favorite cancelled show on FOX. Similar Shows: None. Grade: B. If released, get it.

Live to Dance: Description- A dance show where any group size, style, or age could compete to be known as the best dance act in America. It was a temporary replacement for Survivor this season and was based off a British show. Notable People- Paula Abdul was a judge and helped create this show. Pros- An interesting reality show where we can vote for the winner. Cons- We can disagree too much with the judges’ early decisions. Cancellation Reasons- It wasn’t on for very long so it barely gave people a chance to get used to it. It wasn’t exactly the style of CBS. The lack of limitations must have caused trouble. It may not be cancelled, but don’t count on it. If it is renewed, it would most likely be a different network like the CW. Similar Show: So You Think You Can Dance? Grade: D+. It won’t be released.

$#*! My Dad Says: Description- A son looks at his relationship with his father. It was inspired by a twitter feed. Notable People- William Shatner is the father and Nicole Sullivan is the mother. Pros- Some people might like it. Cons- It isn’t very good and might not have made it if famous people weren’t on it. The acting is poor. Cancellation Reasons- Not enough people liked it. Most people could just read the twitter feed instead. Critics hated it. It might get released to DVD and all the episodes have aired. Similar Shows: None. Grade: D-. If released, don’t get it.

The Cape: Description- A former cop fakes his death and becomes a vigilante. I don’t really know how else to describe the show. Notable People- Summer Glau, an actress who has played various weird characters on other shows like Firefly, was on the show. Pros- There is an interesting storyline and it is realistic enough. It is a good interpretation of the popular story idea and unique for television. Cons- Some of what should be serious moments are laughable due to their cheesiness or otherwise poor delivery. It is not popular enough. Cancellation Reasons- Not enough people liked it. It was unique and therefore doomed. Also, it wasn’t really that good in the first place. The last episode didn’t air on television, but was released online. It will be released to DVD. Similar Shows: Power Rangers, any Batman series, and Nikita. Grade: C.

The Defenders: Description- A pair of defense lawyers in Las Vegas work different cases with other people’s help. Notable People- Jim Belushi from Saturday Night Live and According to Jim was present. Jerry O’Conner from Sliders and other works was present. Pros- A very good legal show. You don’t normally see shows like this anymore. It makes you think. Cons- Not as good as when it started. It won’t air any new episodes, despite great ratings at the beginning. Cancellation Reasons- Apparently, it didn’t catch on with enough viewers or, quite possibly, CBS thinks that other shows would be better and it was doing fine otherwise. All episodes have aired and it might be released to DVD. It moved to Fridays late into the season. It was my favorite cancelled show on CBS. Similar Shows: The Good Wife and Blue Bloods. Grade: A. Get it on its release date if it comes out to DVD.

Off the Map: Description- A team of doctors work on an island with Spanish-speaking people. I’m not sure which island. Notable People- The creators of Grey’s Anatomy either created this show or are executive producers. Pros- A unique and good medical drama with a twist. It has good drama and humor. Cons- There can be too many people and storylines to keep track of. Cancellation Reasons- ABC tends to hate this time slot which is why they temporarily gave the 9-10 time slot on Wednesdays to comedies. Not enough people watched it. Similar Shows: Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Grade: B. It is now released to the public.

Mad Love: Description- It is the love story of two people and the love/hate story of their two best friends. Set in New York City. Notable People- Sarah Chalke, who once worked on Roseanne, is Kate. Pros- It is a smart new comedy that has an original idea for a show. Cons- All the unique shows, it seems, get cancelled before it really starts. Immoral themes are present. Cancellation Reasons: It never really found its footing. The fans failed to catch on although the critics loved it. Also, the most evident reason seems to be that there was no more room on the schedule for it. Similar Shows: None. Grade: B. Consider it if it is released.

Chaos: Description- A new member of the CIA has some misadventures with the people he works with, a slightly rouge group. Notable People- Kirkwood Smith from That 70’s Show is the boss. Pros- Interesting and funny. Cons- Not realistic and confusing. It can be hard to stay with. It is also hard to tell what it is about. Cancellation Reasons- It premiered too late into the season. Nobody watched it. The timeslot also had two other cancelled shows before and the fans of those shows weren’t going to watch another show. It aired on Friday nights. Similar Shows: Nothing currently on the air. Grade: C. It won’t be released to DVD, but if it is, you might like it.

Perfect Couples: Description- A comedy about three married couples and friends. Pros- A good comedy about relationships. Cons- Like most shows, bad themes tend to be present, but at least you know that the characters are married on the show and nothing happens with the actors. It can be weird sometimes. Cancelation Reasons- There were not enough fans to keep the show alive. Other than that, I don’t understand why it is gone. The fans were devoted, but there just weren’t enough of them. It was my favorite cancelled show on NBC. Similar Shows: None. Grade: B+. Get it if it comes out.

Better with You: Description- A look at different stages in a relationship: married for a long time, dating for a long time, and engaged for a short time. Notable People- Jo Ann Garcia, from Reba and Privileged, is on the show. Debra Jo Rupp, from That 70’s Show, is also present. Others might be famous. Pros- An interesting comedy that has interesting comparisons. Cons- All shows like this are normally unpopular or lowly rated. It’s not the best show. Cancellation Reasons: No viewers, all shows like this fail, and it is mostly unoriginal. Similar Shows: Rules of Engagement. Grade: C-. You don't have to get it if it comes out.
