Supernatural Shows aren’t Science Fiction

I just don’t get it. I have no idea why so many people tend to link the idea that a show like Charmed would be science fiction. There is nothing remotely resembling science fiction in that show. And yet, so many people seem to think that any supernatural themed show is automatically science fiction in some way, somehow. I don’t believe that this is the case at all.

 

I mean, there already is a name for the type of show that uses supernatural like elements. That type of genre is called supernatural. Why label it with science fiction when it clearly isn’t? I don’t get why this is done constantly at all.

 

Maybe I should explain more what I mean by science fiction and why I think that supernatural shows are different. Science fiction typically uses advance technology, is set in the future, features time travel in a certain way, uses superheroes (although superhero shows can be different enough from what I can consider science fiction at times), has people going to alternate realities, or any combination of them. And while some of this may show up in supernatural shows, you won’t see technology responsible for this at all in any way.

 

While this post may not have done that well a job explaining my thoughts on this subject this time around, I did think that it is good to express my opinion into this wrong line of thought. I can’t believe that Wikipedia would think that Supernatural is the longest running science fiction show when the very name of the show implies that it has nothing whatsoever to do with science fiction. What is up with the very flawed line of thinking?

Wishlist for Final Season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine

While I’ve missed a lot of the last few seasons of this show since it moved to NBC, I’m still hoping that I can write what I feel are some of the best ideas for the final season of this show. I know that they have already made the episodes so there is no way this could affect what they do with the season. I know that they are going to include the coronavirus pandemic and talk about police brutality inspired by the George Floyd protests. What else should they do? Well, here’s what I feel that they should cover.

1- Have Raymond and Terry talk about what being a black cop is like in a country still suffering from racism. With all of the known (but not always widely accepted) problems of racism still going on, they should explain just how different it is for white cops versus black cops especially in a world where it is known that unarmed black people die at the hands of police still.

2- Have a character get coronavirus. I wouldn’t know who would be the best one. You could go with someone who is more likely to suffer the negative effects of it or be worse off. Or you could have a man or woman who is likely to not have any ill effects which could be an annoyance to some people. I’d have to imagine that Amy would be a good candidate for it to see how she would react to it. 

3- Have someone go viral. In this case, it should be a viral video but of something good going on and not an issue that would typically get a cop in trouble nowadays for bad reasons. It would be nice to see the type of good that can go on in the cop world so this would be a good thing to include or have in the show at some point in the future.

That’s all that I can think of for this post. I wish that I could include more and maybe would, but just can’t think of what would happen and be good especially since I think that I missed all of the most recent season that had aired. I still hope that this is a good list regardless.

What is a Concept Episode?

You might have heard of this sort of thing or maybe you haven’t. This might be a term that I’ve invented in some way. But every now and then, you will see what I call a concept episode air on TV. What does that mean? I might as well explain.

 

It might be best to just talk about this by bringing up a good example of what a concept episode is. Those of you that are familiar with the show The Flash would know that the character of Barry Allen is a speedster who can travel incredibly fast by using super speed. They once aired a really good episode of that show called Enter Flashtime. The gist of the episode is that most of it is in super speed. That is what you call a concept episode. With most of the show in normal speed, doing most of it in super speed would be an interesting concept.

 

There are other examples of this sort of thing, but I don’t think that they are worth mentioning at this point in time. I think that I made the point with just the one example that I needed to. I like it when a show does something different and like seeing them from time to time. They should make more of them in the end to ensure that we are always doing good things.

How Shows with Black Casts are Different than Other Shows

There isn’t too much else to say in this introduction as it is quite clear to me and a lot of other people that shows with a mainly black cast are a whole lot different than most of the other shows that you see on TV with mostly white casts. These shows are always different in some way that can be clear. Whether or not you think that they are any better or worse because of this is your own opinion.

Watching Black Lightning would be very different than watching all of the other Arrowverse shows and not just because of the filming location being different or other factors like that. But there is a lot that is worth pointing out relating to that show and how it relates to other black shows like it. 

You see, a lot of the scenes would have soul songs in the background as various scenes were to happen. We would always see different scenes with people doing declarative monologues and various other things like that in the end in some way, shape, or form. A lot of conversations of various sorts would happen and these shows can be very conversation centric.

When it comes to black comedies (not, in this case, to be confused with dark humor or things like that), they are different too in other ways. The type of humor isn’t something that you’d see most of the time on any other show. It can be good or hard to understand at times. But the style of humor is without a doubt something that you wouldn’t see in most other sitcoms.

And that’s all that I can think of for this blog post. I need to spend time to do a whole lot more of the detail posts that I like to do and at a better time that I’d like to do them at too. I just hope that I don’t have too much free time if it means that I don’t have a job anymore. I need to write more of what I want to do for blogs while at the same time not losing focus on work or other things like it. I do plan to bring back one of my favorite posts this year and hope to do that before September. I’ll see you in the future with more posts of this blog.

The Sophomore Slump

This is a term that I have not invented myself as I’ve seen it used in various places. What the term means is that a show will falter in its second season in some way after airing a strong or much better first season. That’s the gist of the terminology. 

I am writing this post due to recent examples that I can think of. After being so good and interesting in its first season, Prodigal Son was too different and just wasn’t the same the second time around which was one of the reasons why it was cancelled. I also didn’t like Pandora as much in its second season as too much of the first season cast was randomly gone with little to no explanation and there were other issues with it as well. It seems likely dead with no third season.

Why would we want a show with a sophomore slump to continue on? Well, maybe that second season will be the worst of all of them, with more than just the first season being good in comparison. Like I would hate to think of just how horrible it would have been if the original Charmed ended after just the second season because I think that of what I’ve seen of the original show, the second season just did not work out as well as it could have been compared to the rest of the series. But it is understandable why they would want to cancel a show after an unimpressive second season.

There isn’t too much else to say as I seek to finish writing all of the posts that I want to do and feel that I need to do. I haven’t had much time and should give up my blogs as I’ve probably stated before in this or other blogs of mine before. But I’m going to keep at it for now and hope for the best.

The Sex is Amazing

You’ve probably heard this common phrase on TV a whole lot. You probably came to this clickbait blog post wondering what on earth this Adam Decker guy was talking about this time. Well, I might as well explain why I find this phrase to be annoying while also mentioning other problems that television has with its depictions of sex and other things like it. I will leave romance out of it and mention some issues with that relating to another, potential post.

What is wrong with amazing sex? You’d think nothing would be wrong with it. I wouldn’t know for sure what sex is like. But I can still criticize the phrase due to its overuse. The main thing that I don’t like about it is that there are far more important things in a relationship than just the sex. For people to always be so focused on it and it alone can be an issue. If we are only focused on sex relating to what goes on in a character’s life, then that would be a problem.

Of course, sex not being good would be an issue as well. But it doesn’t seem like they focus on that as much as they could (they being the writers of a show). They want you to know about just how great the sex is until something goes wrong with the relationship. And something always will.

There are a lot of sex problems on TV. They never seem to focus on the sex lives of older characters. You wouldn’t think that that would be a problem. But when it comes to teen sexuality, there is a whole lot of it throughout TV. There shouldn’t be. We don’t need shows like Teen Mom or 16 and Pregnant any more than we need various other shows having the high schoolers have sex. This is something that we should make sure doesn’t happen, not something that we should normalize. Plus, even just showing teens in a state of undress could be a problem itself.

Speaking of that, why are so many characters shown in a state of undress anyways? Even if it does not relate to sex in the end, it is difficult not to wonder what else viewers are supposed to think about if they don’t want this topic covered. Are we supposed to ignore all the shows just because they all tend to have too much sex in them? I mean, we can. But we’d be missing a whole lot.

Ultimately, a lack of sex in any relationship can be a very good thing. That doesn’t just apply to all of the characters that we see on TV. It can apply in reality too. Just because you aren’t having sex, this does not mean that the relationship is bad or going poorly. Often, not having sex is a good decision. And we need to get rid of phrases like the sex is amazing and focus on more important aspects of relationships.

My Planned Viewing Habits: Summer of 2021

Here is a sort of quick post that I can do since the summer season has already started. I do not know yet just how much I might record instead of just watching what I want to live and ignoring every other thing that I also like and am interested in.

As usual, plans can change and much is unknown with scheduling still. I will watch movies on some days. In fact, if you know my Survivor blog, it would have posted some of the days of the week when I watch movies right now. But one has changed when it was and it wouldn’t be in the posted part of that blog yet. But there is some information in my recent posts of my Elementary blog why that would be. I am seeing some movies on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays right now. So far, only Mondays might have the chance and time for me to watch movies then during primetime as there isn’t much that I’m interested in watching then yet. I do watch movies on Sunday afternoons when I’m able to with some free time spent on Sunday nights instead. But let’s get to the schedule.

First will be the spillover from the main season part 1. This is any show that has started to air before the end of the main season that has not had any notable breaks since either April or May. These shows that I’m still watching are The Flash, Superman and Lois, Kids Say the Darndest Things, Kung Fu, Legends of Tomorrow, Charmed, Dynasty, and Batwoman.

Second, we have spillover from the main season part 2, which is anything that I have decided started in the main season but won’t be returning from a hiatus until later this summer. Those are the shows of Supergirl, Riverdale, and The Outpost. 

Third, we will get to the returning shows that either are back already or will be known to return at some point in time. They are the shows of Celebrity Family Feud, The Chase, To Tell the Truth, Stargirl, Lego Masters, Press Your Luck, The $100,000 Pyramid, Card Sharks, The Hustler, Coroner, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Burden of Truth, and Roswell, New Mexico.

Fourth, we have all of the new shows that I’m currently interested in seeing. They are Wellington Paranormal, Diggstown, The Republic of Sarah, HouseBroken, Crime Scene Kitchen, and Family Game Fight! Well, I have already seen HouseBroken, but will not be watching that again.

Fifth, we have a batch of shows that are currently unknown if I will see or not. They are set to air at some point during the summer on CBS. They are Secret Celebrity Renovation and Superstar Racing Experience. I normally watch every new CBS show at least once. But since some of them will be moved to streaming since more people are streaming certain shows than giving it ratings any other way, I am not sure that I want to keep watching every new CBS show lest they move something that I like to their streaming service instead of keeping it on the network.

Sixth and finally, we get to an unknown status on shows that are probably cancelled, just not officially, or are still unknown whether or not they are coming back for the future. I’m only going to include shows here that I actually care about and want to see at some point in time, including one that I have not yet seen. Those shows are Blood and Treasure, Songland, The CW Happy Hour, and Primetime: What Would You Do? I’d have to imagine that at least The CW Happy Hour for sure isn’t coming back. One source that I read said that they already started filming Blood and Treasure back in 2019 so that would have to be coming back at some point, right?

There isn’t much else that I can say during this post and can only hope that I didn’t forget anything. But I know that some parts of the schedule aren’t announced yet. Some of these parts may not air at all in the future. I mean, Generation Gap was said to be a show at some point, but I still don’t know if that will be happening in the end. Maybe Matt Roush would know? Whatever is happening, I hope to see it and will imagine that I’ll be seeing a whole lot of the CW this summer.
