Thoughts on midseason shows in the 2013-2014 TV season

Here are my thoughts on the midseason shows for this season. Since it is a long time since all these shows will air, a lot of the reviews could become outdated quite quickly. If you see a review crossed out, that means that the show was already cancelled before I even got a chance to post it. They probably deserved it. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before they all premiere. If any of them are summer shows or don’t wind up airing at all (like Murder Police), then I’ll just ignore the planned review and go without it. I’ve also included two fall shows that I should have mentioned sooner but haven’t because I didn’t plan on watching it or had some other strange reason about it.

The Goldbergs- This ABC comedy airs at 9/8 Central on Tuesdays. It is about a man’s life growing up in the eighties and is based on details that actually happened (although I’m not sure just how much). It can be pretty good and funny sometimes. Not quite sure what else to say at the moment since I haven’t seen that much of it yet. I give it three out of five stars.

The Arsenio Hall Show- This FOX talk show airs in the late night time slot at midnight in most time zones and eleven p.m. in the Central time zone, although it might air at different times in various different regions. Plus, it may air on more than just FOX. It airs five days a week and I think might even air on Sundays as well. I don’t know how often that might be. It could only be on rare occasions, often but not always, or all the time. As you can tell, I don’t really watch the show that much. I rarely tune in because the show is so bad; I find it quite hard to sit through a whole episode. I’m not sure what the farthest I’ve ever gotten through an episode is. There are plenty of other interesting things on and I’d rather go to bed than watch this. Its lack of humor is embarrassing. I don’t know why the audience is laughing at all. I give it one out of five stars.

Intelligence- This CBS drama airs at 10/9 Central on Mondays. It replaces the probably cancelled Hostages. This show is about a man with a computer chip in his brain. In fact, that seems to be the only thing they talk about the show in promos. “We’ve given a man information only found in a computer,” is more or less the plot of every episode. You can’t expect much from that. This show is generally boring and uninteresting. There was not much there and barely any of it was remotely good or entertaining. I don’t really like it at all and only had to watch the first episode to realize that I would never want to turn into it again. While it’s not the only show I’ve seen where I thought that about the show, that doesn’t give the show any excuse as to why I should watch it again. I give it one out of five stars.

Rake- This FOX drama aired originally on Thursday and then was abruptly moved to sometime on Friday where it could slowly die a death that this network is notorious for giving shows it airs. This, however, is not a good show they are screwing with by any means. It’s a remake of a foreign TV show so you know that it is probably crap. And you would be right. This drama is about a lawyer with his own set of problems. They crammed so much into the first episode that not much was really accomplished in the end. This show has some good parts, but not enough to save it from anything that a show might need to not be cancelled. I give it two out of five stars.

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon- This NBC show airs late at night Mondays through Friday at 11:30/10:30 Central or a bit later. It is the same Tonight Show that NBC is known for with its seventh (or sixth) regular host. This host is now Jimmy Fallon who was a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live before he had an ill fated attempt at a film career. Afterwards, he hosted Late Night for a while and then ultimately moved up an hour to this show. It is pretty much the same great show that he hosted on Late Night only it’s the Tonight Show instead. If you liked him before, then you’ll like him now. If you didn’t like him before, get a sense of humor and stop being a hater/troll. This show is pretty good and you might want to watch it if you don’t already have plans late at night. I give it four out of five stars.

Star-Crossed- This CW show airs at 8 Eastern on Mondays. It is about aliens living among humans in the future. It is inspired by racial events in American history. As usual for the network, it is a teen drama with characters in high school and supernatural twists. Well, this time it is science fiction twists, but it’s either one or the other on the CW. Despite it being the stereotypical type of show for this network, it is pretty good. The show is interesting and gives an updated version of racial dramas, even if the cast isn’t as racially diverse as one might like. It is among the good science fiction show that television gives us sometimes. I give it three out of five stars.

Enlisted- This FOX show airs at 9/8 Central on Fridays. It is a comedy about people in the army here in the United States. I haven’t seen that much of it. It isn’t bad or anything like that, I just haven’t had the time in the past to watch it and only did because it was paired with Raising Hope, a show that I do watch. It’s a pretty good show, even though it can be hard to tell what the real point of it is. I give it three out of five stars.

Late Night with Seth Meyers- This NBC show airs weeknights at 12:30/11:30 Central or a bit later. Based on your time zone, it technically actually airs early in the mornings on Tuesdays through Saturdays, although most people up that late forget that midnight is officially the start of the next day. Do people even care? Does it even matter when this show airs? The point is: Late Night now has its fourth host with Seth Meyers. I don’t know if there were ever guest hosts with this show. Regardless, I should give more of an actual review. If you didn’t already know, Late Night is a talk show. Seth Meyers had a long tenure on Saturday Night Live. He was the Weekend Update anchor for longer than anyone else on the show (although he did share his duties with both Amy Phoeler and Cecily Strong, the second of which is still the host with someone else now that he is gone). I’m not sure why people consider him to be a good person to host a late night show, but I would have to agree with them that he is a good host. (I have not looked up the reception of this show yet, I’m referring to whoever is in charge of this at NBC and other people who thought that this would be a nice idea.) Maybe Weekend Update gave him good practice for hosting a talk show, but whatever the reason, Seth Meyers is a good host in my mind at least. Now I have heard rumors that he was potentially a replacement for Regis Philbin on Live, but I don’t know how true that might be. If he was one of the guest co-hosts when Kelly was the only regular host, then that rumor might be true. In fact, this might have given more incentive to NBC to give Seth Meyers a talk show on their network, so that might be why he had great potential to be a replacement for a late night talk show host, should they ever need one. Of course, regarding the hosting of Live rumor, you’d think that he’d still be in a contract with SNL and not be able to switch there. But I shouldn’t be spreading rumors like this since I don’t know if it was true or not. Besides, they went with someone else to co-host Live instead. Back to the point, he seems to be a pretty good host of Late Night. His jokes and other bits work for the most part. He may seem a little timid as a host, but that could wear off once he’s been there a while. I give it three out of five stars.

Mind Games- This ABC show aired Tuesdays at 10/9 Central. But then it got cancelled, and rightfully so. This show was pretty dull. I don’t know if they’ll even air the rest of the episodes. So this show was about people trying to change other people’s mind without them knowing it. That sounds like it could be a good show, but that isn’t what I saw when I watched it. It seemed pretty pointless and I didn’t understand what it had to give me that other dramas didn’t. I’ll tell you what I didn’t get from it that other shows do: quality programming, something I’d want to watch, or a good use of time. So the show got cancelled due to a general lack of interest. I’m still including this review, but crossed it out since the show’s already over. Sorry that it took so long but since many shows aired very late midseason (or not at all, as might be the case), I was waiting to do these reviews until all the ones I was interested in aired. I give it two out of five stars.

Resurrection- This ABC show airs on Sundays at 9/8 Central. It is a pretty strange show. I’m not really sure where they are going with this. Basically, for some unknown reason, dead people somehow return as they originally were before they died many years later. Mystery of how and why this happened seems to be the central plot of the show. So it keeps you interested in it, but it never really explains what it has going for it. But, it is worth watching if you aren’t already into something else. I give it three out of five stars.

Crisis- This NBC show airs on Sundays at 10/9 Central. It is on the board of a good show worth watching and a ridiculous show that isn’t any good. I can’t tell which it is yet so I will say that it is the better show for now, although it doesn’t seem to be that good in the end. It is close enough to being good to let it slide into that region for the moment. You see, while a group of students from Washington DC, including the president’s son, are supposed to go on a field trip of some sort, they are all kidnapped and held hostage causing a nationwide crisis. We then see FBI agents get into the case to try to fix things or otherwise figure out a way of solving the case for the better. Where the show gets strange is the fact that the kidnappers get the parents of these children to do a bunch of crazy things to get their children released while trying to accomplish their various evil plots (the kidnappers are). So the show could be better than it is, but it works in some ways. I give it two and a half out of five stars.

The 100- This CW show airs on Wednesdays at 9 Eastern. It has been described as like Lord of the Flies, so take that however you mean it. I think that it is good, although only average in the end. This show has a bunch of teenagers in a supernatural/science-fiction setting like many CW shows do. So bear with me for a moment. In the future, the earth has been labeled as uninhabitable to live in so one hundred people are sent down to see if living there would work. They are called the hundred, the name of the show. While they are living down there, interesting stuff happens in the space station that they came from. So it seems similar to lots of other shows from this network. But it is interesting and good in the end. I give this three out of five stars.

Friends with Better Lives- This show replaces How I Met Your Mother on television. It airs on CBS on Mondays at 8:30/7:30 Central. This show follows stereotypical groups of friends that have different relationships and are at different points in their lives. But is this watered down premise actually good this time? Sadly, no. This show is just the dumb type of thing people make it out to be. The show offers nothing new to the television world and just gives us a bunch of old, worthless stuff we’re already used to getting from other shows that were all appropriately cancelled. This one will probably follow suit. I give it one out of five stars.

Bad Teacher- This CBS show replaces The Crazy Ones. Whether The Crazy Ones returns to the air in later seasons is currently unknown. It airs at 9:30/8:30 Central on Thursdays. This show is obviously about a bad teacher and is based off of a movie with the same name. Now I don’t really understand why people would think that bad show, I mean, Bad Teacher, would be any good. It isn’t. I don’t know if there are people who think that it is. As usual in a bad show, the characters are dull and pointless leaving no satisfaction as to why one would be interested in watching this show again. I’m certainly not going to bother tuning in again. This show isn’t even funny. I give it one out of five stars.

Now there are three other shows that I wanted to add to this list. They are Reckless, Crossbones, and the Quest. You see, despite the fact that their respective networks all said that they were going to air these shows sometime at midseason, there is little evidence to show that these shows will be part of the schedule any time soon. They may all be cancelled before they aired. They may be some sort of summer series or wind up on next season’s schedule. I don’t know what happened to any of them and I’m hoping that somebody somewhere does know so that they can tell me about what happened to them and why that happened. So I planned on reviewing them for midseason, but decided not to since they didn’t seem like they would in the end. And I do want to update the midseason shows at some point soon since the upfronts and cancellation news is coming soon. So enjoy these reviews for now and more blog posts, as always, will be coming later at some point, I just don’t know when.

Silver Globe Award 2013 Winners

Okay, I figured that I wouldn't want you to wait that long to find out who won the Silver Globe Awards from last year's television season. I thought about waiting a long time to tell you this so that I could figure out the worst show nominees and post the worst show on television at the same time as the best show on television. And while I still might do that, since it will be a long time before the 2013-2014 television season ends and nominees from that season to be finalized, it could be a long time before you figure out which show wins the best show on television because I still want to wait until the worst show is also decided to post that as well. And there is more that I have to explain about how I do the nominees for the worst shows different than the nominees for the Emmys. Plus, as always, there's still more blog posts I have to do as there are many TV shows that I need to review online that haven't already been posted here yet. There are midseason shows (a lot of which haven't aired yet), shows that are on the air but haven't been reviewed by me yet, and I'm already working on the cancelled shows for this season. As always, you can probably always expect to see eventual blog posts here, they are just always random and far apart. So I thought that since I was doing a post for a different blog I have, I might as well update my blog here with information that I have ready to post. Christmas Commercials 2013

Finally, at long last, you get to see the number of Christmas commercials that aired last year before the official start of the Christmas season. For the first time, there were commercials in September. Even this late in January, there are still Christmas commercials (at least they aren't for later this year). The number has skyrocketed to an all time high. I've never seen a number like this before. And yet, it  might not be the highest it will ever be. Hopefully, the over counting I did makes up for the under counting that I also did. I have a bunch of crazy rules regarding Christmas commercials too. Some don't count and some count as many times as you see them air, even though their the same commercial. Regardless, I will include the information from last year as a comparison. Prepare to be shocked by the vast number of times they want to shove Christmas in your face before Thanksgiving is over. And they had to start these commercials as soon as they were done with back to school commercials (and back to school already happened for many people).

In 2012 the official count of Christmas commercials before October was 0. The official count before Halloween was 27. The official number of commercials before the official Christmas season started on the Sunday after Thanksgiving is 200.

I realize that last year’s number may have been a bit off since there were some I forgot to report on. And this isn’t my second year counting the number of Christmas commercials but the number of the years before was lost. I became the only member of the facebook group where I kept track of that sort of thing. But since facebook decided to remove all the members because of their new format at the time which is probably outdated now, I deleted the group that since I was the only one left and I didn’t want to have a group that isn’t used for most of the year anyways. Hopefully, it never would have been used for most of the year, even though I have still seen Christmas commercials airing in January. Also, I don’t know if December 1^st or the first Sunday after Thanksgiving is typically the start of Christmas season, but I’m going with whatever comes first. This year, it just happens to be at the same time. I don’t know if December 1^st ever appears sooner or not.

I think that it was around 90-99 the first year I counted, 123 the second year, and 246 the next two years. Then it dropped to the 200 that I reported from last year. In 2013, the first Christmas commercial aired on September 9 when school hadn’t started for many people, the television season was still in its summer shows and the fall ones had yet to premiere, autumn hadn’t even started yet, and Christmas isn’t for another three months. Five commercials (the same one that many times) aired in September. The official count before Halloween was 30. The official count before the Sunday after Thanksgiving was 600. That's triple the number of times it was last year. I'll continue to post this list every year. I don't really care if people are interested in it or not. I'm just amazed at the vast number of Christmas commercials that air before the Christmas season begins.

Silver Globe Awards 2013

On the night of the Golden Globe, I thought that I would post my picks for the self created Silver Globe Awards of last year. Sorry that I haven't gotten around to posting the Christmas commercials that aired before December of last year, but I will. I'm not done counting at we have beaten the all time high by twice as much as needed. As always, I promise more blog posts soon. Note: Since both the Emmy awards and the Golden Globe awards offer best drama and best comedy, I thought that I would to, but only because I disagree with a lot of what they have nominated. I have decided not to include shows nominated by the real award shows, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem considering all the stuff I typically nominate anyways. So I'm doing best drama and best comedy like I have sporadically in the past. I am not nominating what the real people nominated and a show is not nominated for both best comedy-drama and either best comedy or best drama. Here are the nominees. Expect the winners later.

Fridays in Primetime version 2

This should be the last day of the week I'll have to update for a while, at least until the midseason shows premiere. I still haven't reviewed the Mentalist on this blog. I might if it gets cancelled this season as many people say it will. I mean, I'm not going to post Sunday shows again just to add only one new show. But I should just get to the point and publish the list again. There will probably be other posts of various reviews of shows that I don't already have published. I also have to look to add information on shows that might stay cancelled and are ending at the moment for now.

Fridays are the least competitive nights on television although there are some good shows out there. Viewers aren't regular, but those that are and even those that aren't, give the show these ratings. It only seems like CBS and the CW care about good programming on this night although it doesn't always catch on. ABC handles the night best with stand alone episodes of reality shows and could actually care harder than the two networks I just mentioned. The CW shows Nikita. CBS is showing Blue Bloods, Undercover Boss, and Hawaii Five-O. ABC shows 20/20, Last Man Standing, The Neighbors, and Shark Tank. NBC shows Dateline, Dracula, and Grimm. FOX shows Bones. FOX hates its 9/8 Central time slot on Fridays, but there tends to be good shows on at this time sometimes. I will now tell you about what I've seen that isn't cancelled. Beware that most of the shows come here to die and they are only here right now to enjoy them before they are gone.

 

Last Man Standing: Status- Currently on ABC at 8/7 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- My brother liked it at the time and the show I typically watched at the time was repeats. Description- This is a man-centric show about being a man with numerous women in your family. I'm not sure if there's a better way of describing this show or not. Notable People- Tim Allen, known for his comedic work, various movies, and his time on Home Improvement is the main character on this show. Pros- It is funny a lot of the time. Cons- It can be sexist and otherwise demeaning. I've been told it leans one way politically. An actress was recast which typically isn't a good sign for a show. As usual, the morals aren't good. Recommendation- I have no idea if you'd like it or not. If you do, then watch, if not, then don't bother with it. Prediction- Toss-up: I'd say it might last longer but it's just as likely that it will get cancelled. Reception: negative. Grade: C+. New review

 

Dateline: Status- This is currently on NBC at 8/7 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Nothing else on and it seemed interesting. Noteworthiness- It is the longest running primetime news show on NBC and sometimes airs twice in one week. Description- Pretty much an NBC version of 20/20. I don't know which came out first. Pros- It can be interesting. Cons- It can only be interesting if you like it. I haven't seen enough of it to find out how different it is from other networks versions of this show. They mostly only do murder mysteries from real life. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Prediction- It will last forever. Reception: positive. Grade: A.

 

Bones: Status- Currently on at 8/7 Central on FOX on Mondays and in syndication. Why I've seen it- Randomly watched certain episodes until I started watching every episode. Noteworthiness- This is the longest running FOX drama, although it also airs on syndication on various other networks. It is based on cases done by a real person who is a producer of some sort on the show. Description- A different type of drama, it investigates crimes where not much of the body remains, although the murder cases are similar to most TV dramas. Pros- The chemistry between the two leads is interesting enough for the writers to give them a child on the show. The opposites seem to attract. Cons- The timeslot keeps changing, which makes it hard to catch. It doesn't really separate itself from other shows in this genre. The show might have been better earlier based on comments I'm reading online from those that call themselves fans. Recommendation- I haven't seen enough of it at the time, but it has my interest and I'll keep watching. Prediction- I see no reason why it will leave the airwaves anytime soon, but you'll never know what might happen. Reception: mixed. Grade: B. New review?

 

Undercover Boss: Status- Currently on CBS at 8/7 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- It looked interesting. Noteworthiness- Cameras are used by explaining that the person in the show is competing with someone else or to see if they would be chosen for the job. They do different ways of hiding the real reason that the cameras are there, although I've given up watching it by now. Description- Head people of different companies, some well known companies and some not as much, go undercover in their own companies at entry level positions. Pros- CEOs are shown to be actual human beings. The everyman is helped. The incompetence of the bosses in entry level positions is quite humorous. Cons- Editing could be better as some minor things that are referenced later on are not explained. If you've seen one episode, you've seen them all. It could be said that the bosses are only on the show to promote their own business. Bad things normally happen to the employees, although normally not as bad as it otherwise could be. People featured on the show can have controversial opinions and they aren't edited out for whatever reason. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. The Neighbors: Status- This comedy airs on Fridays at 8:30/7:30 Central on ABC. Why I've seen it- Interested in a show like this, though I'm not exactly sure why. Description- This is a comedy about aliens living in human form on earth and going through culture shock. Pros- The show's unique humor makes it good. Cons- The concept isn't original (Similar shows are Mork and Mindy or 3^rd Rock from the Sun, neither of which I have seen). The show can be quite weird and strange to those that aren't used to that sort of thing. Recommendation- I'd say watch it. Prediction- It probably won't last that long because the majority of people aren't into it. Reception: mixed. Grade: C. New review

 

Grimm: Status- Currently on NBC at 9/8 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Promise to watch a new NBC show when it premiered. Description- A police officer discovers that he is a "Grimm," a person who can see fairy tale characters in real life. It is more of a police drama with a twist than a fairy tale drama. Pros- It is pretty interesting and proves that good shows air on Fridays sometimes. Cons- It airs at a bad time. The fairy tale angle is unoriginal. The show is very strange a lot to both regular viewers and potential new viewers. Recommendation- I'd say that you should probably watch it if you have the time. Prediction- It will last a long time, I think. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

 

Shark Tank: Status- Currently on ABC at 9/8 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Flipping channels, stayed here because it seemed interesting. Description- A reality show where a group of rich sharks, as they're called, decide whether or not to buy into a business of an entrepreneur. Pros- The segments are usually short and the decisions are interesting. It can be very intense. These are actually proceedings among people which makes it more real. Cons- You may not like their decisions. It is hard to find a rerun. You might not watch unless you're a regular viewer. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it and you might but whether you should watch or not is up to you. Prediction- It will stay on as it gets good ratings on Fridays. Reception: positive. Grade: C+.

 

Hawaii Five-0: Status- Currently on CBS at 9/8 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Devotion to the CBS network and curious about what the show is about. Noteworthiness- It is a remake of an old, popular show. It has already been sold into syndication. Description- An elite crime fighting team works in Hawaii to solve cases. Notable People- Alex O'Loughlin, known for his work on Moonlight, Three Rivers, and some movies, is McGarrett. Daniel Dae Kim, known for his work on Lost and other shows, is a cast member as well. Pros- This show is actually filmed where it set. It is an interesting drama. The bickering between the two leads is entertaining. Cons- Some of the methods the characters use to catch the perps are unethical. It is a remake, and thus could just be considered trying to reclaim what it once was. Recommendation- Watch this if you have the time to. Prediction- It will last awhile. Reception: positive. Grade: B.

 

Raising Hope: Status- This show is currently on FOX at 9/8 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Free time on my hand and promise to watch a new FOX comedy at the time. Noteworthiness- Believe it or not, this is actually the longest running FOX live action sitcom despite its relatively short time on the air. That kind of thing shows you what happens with the typical FOX live action comedy. Description- A young man finds himself raising a baby with various family and friends of his. Notable People- Greg Garcia, well known for creating My Name is Earl and The Millers, is the creator of this show. Pros- A unique comedy, that's right, it's a comedy, which has its fun on television. The grandmother's craziness always leads to laughs. Cons- The show is pretty weird a lot of the time and not the type of weird that people would like. The morals are bad as usual. Recommendation- Watch this show if you can. It's actually pretty funny. Prediction- I think that this show will last if FOX doesn't mess it up. Since FOX has a reputation for messing various shows up, such as constantly moving time slots, not always having the show on the schedule, and rarely promoting it, like they do with this one, I'm not certain it would last as long as some would like. Reception: positive. Grade: B. New review

 

Nikita: Status- Currently on the CW at 9 Eastern/8 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- Looked interesting. Noteworthiness- It is the remake of another old series. Remakes are popular on this network as well as shows based on pre-existing things. In fact, it is hard to find a completely original series on this network. There was also a movie like this which might have come before the first TV show. Description- A former female spy seeks to stop the place that trained her. That's at least how the show started out and it changed over the course of the series. Pros- A good drama that keeps you interested in the storyline. Cons- I don't see it lasting that long. It can be very confusing and if you miss episodes, you'll be lost to the storyline. Recommendation- Watch it if you can. Prediction- It is officially cancelled after its current season. Reception: somewhat positive. Grade: B+.

 

Dracula: Status- Currently on NBC at 10/9 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- No longer into a different vampire show so I wondered if this would be any good. Description- Dracula is in the present day, I think. He's a vampire, if you didn't already know that. Pros- Critics like it. Cons- This show is boring and sucks quite literally. Recommendation- Don't watch it. Prediction- I don't think that it would last very long. Reception: positive. Grade: F. New review

 

Blue Bloods: Status- This is currently on CBS at 10/9 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- It is on CBS. Nothing else good was on. Description- This is a cop show where the cops are related. It is set in New York City. Notable People- Pretty much everyone who works on the show is famous in some way. Tom Selleck from Magnum PI and movies, is present, but is not the main character. Donnie Walburg, who is in the band New Kids on the Block (I think) is a character as well. Pros- Something good exists on Friday nights for you to watch. A partial family aspect is added to the show which makes it more relatable. Cons- The ways the officers catch and interrogate some of the suspects/criminals is unethical sometimes. It can be like a lot of other dramas. They have made some questionable off-camera choices regarding at least one actress who works on the show. Some episodes are better than others. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it. You might too. Prediction- It will stay around for a while. Reception: mostly positive. Grade: B-.

 

20/20: Status- This is currently on ABC at 10/9 Central on Fridays. Why I've seen it- It looks interesting, depending on the news story. Noteworthiness- It is the longest running primetime news show on ABC and the longest running ABC show in primetime at least. It premiered when Jimmy Carter was president. Description- This is an in-depth news show regarding issues relating to current events or just anything like a murder mystery. Pros- Can be quite interesting if you don't watch anything else at that time. Cons- There's a show like this on every network. Re-runs rarely exist. Some episodes are better than others. It can be hard to watch all the time. Recommendation- I like it, but don't watch it unless I know that I want to. Maybe you'll like it or consider it a complete waste of time. Prediction- It will last forever unless something weird happens. Reception: currently positive, although the first episode was panned which lead to a retooling of the good show we know today. Grade: A.

Monday nights on TV version 2

Here is an update on TV shows on Mondays. Most of this has been posted before, but a lot of this will be new. I have added a brief section for each show regarding the reception of the show. Unknown means that I haven't bothered to look up what reception it might have. I will post which one of these reviews are new and hopefully you will like this post.

Mondays is actually a pretty uninteresting night on television. NBC doesn't normally show that interesting shows although that has probably changed now that the Blacklist is on the air. ABC airs Dancing with the Stars in the spring and fall, The Bachelor in the winter, and The Bachelorette during the summer. The Bachelor series was voted at www.tvseriesfinale.com at the number one popular series that should be cancelled. Castle ends the ABC schedule during the main year. CBS shows its main comedies and ends with a drama. CW shows Hart of Dixie. FOX has been known for showing their most popular dramas at this time, although this is also a bad night for the FOX timeslot depending on who you talk to. Of the few shows I've seen this night, I will give you my rating for them.

 

How I Met Your Mother: Status- Currently on at 8/7 Central on CBS on Mondays. It is also in syndication on various networks. This is the last season. Why I've seen it- My brother watches the show and sometimes I did too. I slowly got into it as it progressed. Description- A man tells the story of how he met his wife and the adventures his friends and he had during this time. Notable People- Alyson Hannigan, known for working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is Lily. Jason Segal, known for some movies, is Marshall. Neil Patrick Harris, known for his movies, hosting award shows, and Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog is Barney. Bob Saget, known mostly for his work on Full House, has an uncredited role of the narrator, but he is not the main character. Pros- It is an interesting show that has good plots and a recurring storyline. It has some better planning on what has happened and what will happen on the show, although it messes up sometimes like all shows. It is probably the most well thought out show. They constantly reference the past in case you didn't see it. Cons- Some of the sexual references are weird. If you aren't into the show, it can be hard to stay into it as the show has a recurring storyline which is easy to miss. It can be too drawn out with its story arcs. Recommendation- Watch it if you like it. Prediction- It is officially ending after this season. Reception: positive. Grade: B-.

 

Almost Human: Status- Currently on FOX on Mondays at 8/7 Central. Why I've seen it- I am generally into science fiction, even on a network notorious for screwing with shows like that (and yet, writers keep selling those shows to them and they keep making them). Description- In the future, cops have to work with robot in order to solve futuristic crimes. Notable People- Michael Irby, who used to work on the Unit (I think), is a character on the show (although I haven't found where he is exactly). Pros- This is a rather interesting drama that isn't just the usual cop show. Cons- The viewers would be confused by the futuristic aspects on the show that appear and make it more confusing considering how many of it has never happened yet. Recommendation- I'd say that you should probably watch it if you aren't doing anything else at that time. Prediction- I'd say that, ratings aside, this show's life on television will be short lived. Reception: unknown. Grade: B. New review

 

2 Broke Girls: Status- Currently on CBS at 8:30/7:30 Central on Mondays. Why I've seen it- The opportunity to watch it once to see if it was any good and my devotion to the CBS network. Description- This show is about, well, two broke girls. Pros- It has its moments of interest sometimes. Cons- The acting is crap. The characters are weak. The transition music is stupid. The show is otherwise pointless. Recommendation- There is no reason you should watch it. Prediction- It might last because most people who have seen this don't have my opinion of it. Reception: positive. Grade: F.

 

Hart of Dixie: Status- Currently on the CW on Mondays at 7 Central or 8 Eastern. Why I've seen it- Nothing to watch during the summer and wanting to see it for a while. Description- A female doctor moves to the south to continue her job and the show focuses on the people there in the town she works at. Notable People- Rachel Bilson, from the OC and probably other works as well, plays the main character. Pros- This show is humorous and keeps you interested in it whether you are a regular viewer or not. Cons- They don't focus on the medical aspect of this show as much as some people would want them to. Recommendation- If you have time to watch it, then you probably should tune in, even if it isn't as in focus on the medical aspect as other medical dramas. Prediction- It will probably last a long time, if the ratings don't fall. Reception: unknown. Grade: B. New review

 

Mike & Molly: Status- Currently on CBS at 9/8 Central on Mondays. Why I've seen it- Curious about the show, plus my devotion to CBS. Description- An overweight couple finds romance with each other. Notable People- Chuck Lorre, creator of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, is not the creator, but he is an executive producer and probably helps with a lot of the episodes. Pros- Finally a love story for fat people. The characters that you know are going to be together actually get together. A lot of it is Emmy material. Cons- The acting and writing could use some work. About half of it is complete crap. Recommendation- You can watch it if you want to. It's better than nothing. Prediction- I don't know how long it will last, but it could last a while. Reception: mixed. Grade: C-.

 

Sleepy Hollow: Status- Currently on FOX at 9/8 Central on Mondays. It has already been renewed for another season. Why I've seen it- Promise to watch a new FOX drama this season and general interest in the premise of the show, despite not likely the original story I'm not even sure that I've read. Description- A British man from the American Revolution era is brought back to life in the present day and teams up with modern day cops to fight against supernatural creatures like a headless horseman. It mixes police procedural with supernatural drama. Pros- This is a pretty good drama. It is much better than the original story (unless you liked it, in which case, it is still better). Cons- It might only exist because of the fairy tale dramas (or whatever kind of story it is) that have been common on TV lately. It is hard to tell what it is about yet and one wonders how they can come up with enough episodes. Some of it is a bit ridiculous. Recommendation- I'd have to say that most people would probably like it and want to watch it all the time. Prediction- It will stay for a long while. Reception: positive. Grade: A. New review

 

Mom: Status- Currently on CBS at 9:30/8:30 Central on CBS. This show replaces Partners and Rules of Engagement and it has a full season order. Why I've seen it- If you didn't know already, I like to watch every CBS TV show I like. Description- A woman deals with the issues of single motherhood and various family problems. Notable People- Alison Janey and Anna Farris, both known for movies, are two main characters on the show. Chuck Lorre, who created Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, and helps with Mike and Molly, helps with this show, although I'm not sure if he created it, which he might have. Pros- People like it, based on comments I've seen online. Cons- All the show is about is a bunch of immoral people and I don't know why we should care about something like this. Recommendation- Don't watch it. The fact that people like it completely baffles me. Prediction- It will not last that long, unless the viewership gets higher. Reception: positive. Grade: F. New review

 

The Blacklist: Status- Currently on NBC at 10/9 Central on Mondays. Why I've seen it- I don't know why I started watching it, but it was probably because the promos made it look good or something like that. Description- Okay, I don't really understand what this show is about yet. It's intriguing enough that if you can't tell what it is, you still might want to watch it to figure it out. Apparently it is about some law enforcement agency going after very dangerous criminals that are on something called the blacklist. Notable People- James Spader, from movies and other things I'm not familiar with, is a main character on the show. Pros- This show is very interesting and keeps you coming back time and time again. Cons- The promos for it make it look dumb (there's no way they face the most dangerous criminal in the world every week). It can be hard to understand. I'm not sure what the plot is. Recommendation- I'd say that you should probably watch it. Prediction- I think that it will stay a long time since it's doing better than most NBC veteran shows. Reception: mixed. Grade: B. New review

 

Hostages: Status- Currently on CBS on Mondays at 10/9 Central. This show replaced Vegas. Why I've seen it- I thought that it might be good. Noteworthiness- It is based on an Israeli show. Description- This show is about a family being held hostage while the captors try to get the mother of the captive family who's a doctor to kill the president. Pros- The show is complex and interesting. The drama keeps you watching week after week. Cons- A problem I can tell you right now is that if you haven't started watching now, the longer you don't watch, the harder it will be to understand what has happened so far. It is hard to tell the motives of characters and it is uncertain as to who the good guys are, if there are any. It is confusing and probably not realistic. Recommendation- While some people don't like it, I think that it's a good show and think that you should watch it. Prediction- Since this is already called a limited run series (which means a limited number of episodes a season and never a full season of 22-24 episodes) and it is the lowest rated CBS show, it won't last that long and I'd be surprised if it gets a second season. Reception: negative. Grade: B+. New review

 

Castle: Status- Currently on ABC at 10/9 Central on Mondays. Why I've seen it- Recommended by my brother and not that great a devotion to any other show at the time. Noteworthiness- Tie-in novels under a character's name that are referenced on the show have been published in real life. Description- A writer of novels assists the police in solving murders and other crimes in New York City. It is also about the love of the two main characters who work together and will stop at nothing to solve any case. Notable People- Nathan Fillion, known for his work on Firefly, and other shows, is the title character, Richard Castle. Pros- It is a semi-unique drama with good comedy and recurring storylines. Cons- It can take a while for some plots to be returned to in the storyline. Basic plots get repeated constantly. Recommendation- Watch this show. It is very good. Prediction- The network would be a fool to ever get rid of this show so let's hope that they are not foolish. I see it lasting for a good time and think that another network would love the show on its network if ABC is, in fact, foolish enough to cancel it. Reception: positive. Grade: A.

Wednesdays on television version 2

I know that I've posted information about TV shows on Wednesdays before. I figure that I will post information about this and various other weeks again since there are new shows that I haven't reviewed yet and shows originally on other nights that I haven't reviewed yet. I think that most of this is relatively the same since when I first posted it a long time ago. So this might be a lot of the same shows mentioned over again. I have a mark next to the new reviews. Some of them might have changed a bit. But I am still updating this and hopefully I will talk about other new shows when a lot of them premiere and I'm already keeping track of the cancelled shows this season. Some are rumored to be cancelled but aren't yet. Some of them will probably get cancelled although we will have to wait until the official cancellation to know for sure (although some cancelled shows never have an official cancellation). I even joke about a probable cancellation in one of the show's reviews. So without further ado, here is a list of Wednesday TV show reviews.

Wednesdays can be a bit of a bore on television. There are some interesting shows but most of it is not worth your time. Yet it also has some of the best shows. ABC shows its comedies which are currently Modern Family, Super Fun Night, and The Middle. NBC shows Law and Order: SVU. The CW shows Arrow and The Tomorrow People. CBS shows Criminal Minds, CSI, and Survivor. I haven't seen much of them that aren't listed here, but I'll tell you about what I have seen. There are no winners or losers, merely competitors.

 

The Middle: Status- Currently on ABC at 8/7 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- Survivor reruns happened and I heard this was good. Noteworthiness- It is tied with Modern Family as longest running ABC comedy. Description- The comedy adventures of an ordinary family in Indiana. Notable People- Patricia Heaton, who was Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond, is the mother. Neil Flynn, from Scrubs, is the father of the show. Pros- Mothers would like this show. It is quite funny from time to time. The youngest kid's quirkiness is humorous. Cons- Some inappropriate stuff comes up sometimes. Recommendation- I say that you should watch this show if you can. You'll especially like it if you don't like Survivor. Prediction- It will last a long time. Grade: B+.

 

Survivor: Status- Currently on CBS at 8/7 Central on Wednesdays. It was on Thursday for a long time until it switched with the comedy blocks. It might have changed because March Madness would move it to this slot for that time and the network decided not to bother changing it for that time. Why I've seen it- I think that other people in my family liked it and I found it interesting as well and started watching. Noteworthiness- It shows two seasons a year; one in the fall and another in the spring. The current season they are on is their 27^th. There has been something new that happens on this show that has never happened in previous seasons. While most reality shows don't have as good ratings as scripted shows, this has good ratings that show scripted shows could envy. It is also the adaptation of the Swedish reality show, Expedition Robertson. It is considered the first American reality show and is the longest running one on CBS if you don't count a news related show. Description- Contestants compete against each other to see who will survive 39 days and win a million dollars. Every week, a contestant is voted out and the last few people face a jury of previously voted out people who vote one of them the winner. Notable People- Jeff Probst is the host. Mark Burnett is the creator of this show. Pros- There is a different cast each season so if you don't like one season you can stop watching and watch the next season. The contestants are interesting sometimes. Drama is always pleasant. Due to the competition nature of the show, it can't legally be scripted like a lot of reality shows are. Something new always happens in each season. Cons- The people that you hate can make it far while the people that you like get eliminated first. The basic plots of some seasons can be similar to each other. They like to recycle ideas, locations, and challenges. It can be hard to find a normal season anymore. A lot of controversies have arisen on the show. This show has indirectly made every other reality show. They have a tendency to keep having returning players each season which can be off-putting to those that aren't already fans of the show. Lately, people have not liked most of the new seasons (beyond the twentieth season, at least). Recommendation- Take it or leave it. I like it and think that you should watch it, but not everyone has my opinion of this show. Prediction- It will last as long as it has the same host, enough viewers, and enough money. If the host changes, it might leave the airwaves shortly after although another network like the CW might still have faith in it which could lead to a dramatic retooling of the show plus a fight with any other networks that might want it (if any do). Besides, this is the type of show that can be off the air for an extended amount of time and suddenly return with new people. I even had a blog about it, if you didn't already know. Revolution: This NBC drama airs at 8/7 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- I thought that it looked good. Description- A world has existed for fifteen years where electricity (supposedly) no longer exists anymore. A band of survivors try to make their way in this new world with what remains of the old one. Pros- This is an interesting concept that I'm surprised no one has come up with yet (although I could be wrong about that). Cons- The show is strange, dark, and hard to comprehend. Recommendation- I think that it is worth your time. Prediction- Toss-up. I think that it is just as likely to stay as it is to be cancelled. Grade: B-. New review

 

Arrow: Status- Currently on the CW at 7 Central or 8 Eastern on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- I wanted to watch a CW show that was new at the time. This show was new last season. Description- The CW drama is about the comic book character Green Arrow. I don't know if it is accurate or not to the source material. Pros- It seems interesting enough to keep potential viewers coming back and watching it again. Cons- It seems like every other superhero drama. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. If you have time to watch it, then you should. If you aren't interested, then you aren't missing out on anything. Prediction- It will stay around because this network needs another hit. Grade: B. New review

 

Modern Family: Status- Currently on ABC at 9/8 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- Free time at the time and general interest in the show. Noteworthiness- Like The Office, it is a fake documentary meaning it presents itself as a reality show, when it isn't (Although certain "reality" shows are that way). It has inspired ABC to look for families like the ones on the show. Whether anything will come of that besides 20/20 interviews is another question. It is a popular show winning awards as is the longest running comedy on this network along with The Middle. Description- A look at the people an extended family of "normal" ones and not so normal ones. Notable People- Ed O'Neil from Married with Children is present. Other people might be famous either before or after the show aired. Pros- This is a funny comedy that attracts all different people like the families that are like this. There are good episodes a lot of the time. Cons- The episodes do not always have enough material in them and move by too quickly. Inappropriate material shows up often. Recommendation- Watch this show if you like it. Prediction- Since it is the most successful comedy on ABC, it will last a long time. Grade: A.

 

Criminal Minds: Here I state my very brief review of this CBS drama that airs at 9/8 Central on Wednesdays. I saw it once and I didn't like it. It was too dark and I'll never watch it again. I'm not sure what else to post here except that even the first main character left over creative differences on this show and the thought that it was too dark. I don't know if I'll ever do a more in-depth review of it or not, but I will if people want more. I give it no grade. New review

 

Law and Order: Special Victims Units: Status- Currently on NBC at 9/8 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- I forget why I started watching. Noteworthiness- It is the longest running drama spin-off on television as well as the longest running NBC drama. It is also the only primetime drama to premiere last millennium and still be on the air producing new episodes. It is a spin-off of Law and Order. Description- A group of people known as the special victims unit (SVU) investigate sexual crimes and crimes that happen to children as well. Pros- They never show the crimes. The plots are interesting and different. There are always twists that keep you hooked on the show. They use real life cases as an inspiration, but not as what actually is shown. Cons- The show may never end. They regularly switch head writers because it has been on so long. The endings are normally not happy. It has a rather grim subject for a show. Recommendation- Give it a chance and you might like it. Prediction- It will last until people stop watching for some odd reason. Grade: A+. New review?

 

The Tomorrow People: Status- Currently on the CW at 8 Central and 9 Eastern on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- Promise to watch a CW show since the others I watch aren't on a regular basis at the time this first appeared. Noteworthiness- It says in the opening credits that it is based off of something by the same name. I'm not certain what it was, but this could be a remake of some sort. Description- This show is a science fiction show about an advanced race of humans with special powers, the people that are against them by hunting them, and the main character who is a double agent trying to help his kind. Pros- The show is very interesting. You don't have to watch all the time to keep up with the storyline (although it does help to always watch it). Cons- This show seems like a lot like of the other shows and movies in this genre. Recommendation- If you have time or like the network then you might want to give it a chance. If you don't like science fiction, then don't watch it. Prediction- I could see it lasting a while, but I don't know what could happen on this network. Grade: B-. New review

 

Super Fun Night: Status- Currently on ABC at 9:30/8:30 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- Not sure if it was a mistake of some sort or I wanted to watch a new ABC comedy. Description- I think that this has the adventures of a woman and her friends with an enemy as well that complicates things. Although, I'm not really sure what the show is about and you probably wouldn't understand it either if you watched it. Notable People- Liza Lapira, who starred on NCIS as a recurring member and had roles both minor and major in various cancelled shows like Dollhouse, Traffic Light, Super Fun Night, and Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23. Pros- The show is unique. Cons- This show is terrible. First of all, my main problem with comedies and why I don't like them are that they aren't funny when they are supposed to be. I'm not certain what the plot of the show is. Recommendation-Don't bother watching it. Prediction- I don't see it lasting that long. Grade: F. New review

 

CSI: Status- Currently on CBS at 10/9 Central on Wednesdays. Why I've seen it- I watch one of its spin-offs so I thought that I should watch this as well. Noteworthiness- This was once the most watched drama on television until it was replaced by NCIS. Its pilot was passed by three different networks, ABC, NBC, and FOX, before it was picked up by CBS. It is also the longest running drama on CBS and used to have two spin-offs (one indirectly), although it could have more in time. Description- A team of people solves cases using Crime Scene Investigation. Notable People- Ted Danson, known for various comedies, actually, is the main character of this drama, although he didn't used to be. Pros- This is a good crime drama which goes more in-depth into how they solve crimes and catches the person who committed them. Cons- Not enough women are represented. A lot of other shows are just like it. Probably isn't realistic. It has lost its main character, not once but twice. Main characters have been known to leave in the middle of a season. Recommendation- Take it or leave it. Prediction- Its end will come, I just don't know when. Grade: C.
